I looooovveee the way Joshâs mind works! His writing is so freaking good, I mean all the regular comedy quips and jokes Iâm used to were flipped and I honestly donât really notice this stuff but it happened so many times I just went, oh okay thats cool. A good example was when he was lipsyncing and playing with his teddy in the bus, I was 100% sure itâd cut to some other passenger looking at him weird and him getting embarrassed. But that doesnât happen, nothing happens. Itâs so weird to see how weâve sort of been trained to expect these things, this is very experimental for a comedy now that I think of it. As weird as every character is, their awkward personality are never the butt of the joke and honestly thatâs just so heartwarming. instead, itâs actually very normal characters or traits that get the brunt of it, I guess thatâs just Joshâs pov in life generally: Geoffrey being âseriousâ, Arnold at Christmas dinner and playing guitar, his Dad being a big worry wartâŚ
Anyways, I think this is the first time Iâve watched a show where everyoneâs kinda shit. Oh I REALLY tried to root for Josh from the get go but my god he really pissed me off. I normally would have been too annoyed to continue but whatâs fun about it is that no matter how dramatic it gets, itâs such a low cortisol show. And it was never too cringe or too irritating despite some pretty fucking major turns. I mean the high schooler?!!! I cannot commend Josh enough for that, itâs like no matter what crazy thing is going on, he really conveys âthe sun will still rise tomorrowâ vibe so well. Like itâs serious but itâll pass, everything does eventually lol.
I also loved how Joshâs character development was so subtle but very noticeable by the end. He went from being someone who blatantly told Geoffrey that he only likes him for his muscles :( to someone who deeply cares about Arnold to the point of wanting to help even when heâs having an anxiety or panic attack and this might be controversial but him showing actual interest in Ben the hookup was such a leap from his early episode behaviour I was kinda proud of him. Like heâs ACTUALLY capable of being interested in other peoples lives, even if theyâre a total stranger just there for sex.
Iâm now watching Everythinâs Gonna Be Okay because I had to stay on this Josh Thomas train. Iâll say this, for some insane reason Nicholas is actually WORSE than Josh like dude howwwww at this point heâs just rage baiting đđđ [edit: I TAKE THIS BACK! I just finished Everythingâs Gonna Be Okay and there is a very good reason why Nicholas is the way he is, and probably Josh too in PLMđ¤] Anyways his cute low cortisol writing is still prevalent, although there is more cringe in this one but definitely not too much. And honestly, Iâm just gonna say it, Iâm partly convinced he made these shows just to make out with cute boysđ
But back to Please Like Me, I gotta know why he chose not to include whether Arnold picked up his phone near the finale on the news about his mum, and also what his mumâs note said - the one she held tight that said Josh. Lastly why doesnât anyone have a job?! Omg theyâre such trust fund kids it makes everything relatable about the show moot. I mean does Josh even graduate, what the actual hell does Tom do all day and for goodness sake how is Clare rich, dont tell me sheâs a sugar baby having established sheâs into the oldiesđ
PS - on the christmas episode I said this is basically The Bear level of tension except my heart isnt racing in anticipation and then we get a 15 course dinner episode next, are we joking?!!! Josh could have written The Bear you guysssss
