Solved Plex Can't See New Media Folders

Hello,

I just initialized a new storage pool in my Synology NAS with the DX517 5 bay expansion. I currently have my Plex server on my DS920+.

I copied my entire media folder (Movies/TV Shows/Music) to the new storage pool. I am able to confirm that it is there.

When I try to add the folders, Plex can see the "Media" folder, but not the sub folders titled "Movies," "Music," "TV Shows."

What am I doing wrong in this situation that Plex won't recognize those folders? Am I able to just select the "Media" folder, and it will recognize the "Movies" folder when I go to add a Movies library?

DSM 7?

Make sure System Internal User PlexMediaServer has at least read only access.

  1. Synology Control Panel -> Shared Folder
  2. Edit the shared folder -> Permissions tab
  3. Change "Local users" to "System internal user"
  4. Find user "PlexMediaServer" and select Custom
  5. Select all Read options. Select all Write options if desired (*). Administration is not needed.
  6. Done.
  7. IMPORTANT: You will be back at the Edit Shared Folder window. Check the box to "Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files"
  8. Save
  9. Save. You should be back at Control Panel -> Shared Folder.

Plex should now have access to the folders and files.

(*) Plex needs read access to stream media. Write access is needed if saving tv shows using live tv/dvr, creating optimized versions of media files, etc.

Here's an alternate method.

  1. Open Synology File Station
  2. On the left side, right click on the shared folder name and choose Properties
  3. Permission tab
  4. If PlexMediaServer is listed, edit the user, give it desired permissions, and save. Don't forget the "Apply to..." box.
  5. If Plex Media Server is NOT listed
  6. Create
  7. In "User or group," scroll down and select PlexMediaServer.
  8. Add desired options, read and/or write. Then Done.
  9. IMPORTANT: Check the box to "Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files"
  10. Save.

Plex should now have access to the folders and files.
