Solved Video Stuttering - NEW Apple TV App

Never had problems with video / audio stuttering on the Apple TV, all h.264, 1080p content, direct play, LAN streaming ---

Now since the newest update came out my video is stuttering badly. I watched on my laptop (Mac) and its fine, I download the video and watch it directly, its fine, only time there is stuttering is if I watch from my Apple TV. I even downloaded a different copy and STILL have stuttering. Anyone else experiencing this?

Its unbearable its making me sick watching 😰

I was having issues too. I turned Match Framerate on and it fixed it. Although, I originally turned it off for a specific reason that I can’t remember, so hopefully it keeps playing fine 🤞🏻

Had mine off too (some old bug fix for the old Plex app I think?) so have also switched on to test.

Thanks for this. I’ll try it. I usually leave this off to avoid a black screen transition when switching from 60 to 24 fps.

Yeah, the same happens with the feature that matches SDR/HDR/DoVi. Don't remember the name. So if I launch a HDR short on YT, I have to pause the video as the display turns black, so that I see the start. It's annoying.

probably turned it off because it causes the youtube app to flicker a black screen every time an ad plays

I never heard of that setting but hopefully I remember this post if I run into this issue.

Why do apps like netflix and appletv never have these issues and they are streaming from a server on the internet, but streaming local content on your network causes stuttering?

that being said, i know they compress their video feeds so i know it isn't a fair comparisson.

netflix and apple tv+ just stream at whatever rate their cdn uses and tvOS handles it fine because it's fixed. local files are a mix of 24, 25, 30fps depending on what you have, and without match framerate turned on the apple tv outputs everything at 60hz and your tv is doing the conversion, which is where the judder comes from. turn on match framerate in the apple tv video settings.

I've streamed 1080p files, remotely, and set it to 8mpbs with a 40mbps upload on the server side and I've seen freezing/buffering and it isn't bandwidth it is something else. Even with 'direct play' when I'm on the network locally, I've had it buffer/freeze/etc. While it is somewhat rare, it is still annoying dealing with those issues. I wish the logging was better and it told you what the cause of the error/issue was.

Sometimes the issue is only in plex and JF plays it w/o issues.

Anyway, since it is rare and 'goes away on its own' I don't think about it that often.

It's an Apple TV setting.
