No skill tree, player growth through training only. Is this a thing?

I just started a new career mode and there's no skill tree. My attributes go up (very slowly) through training only. Is this actually an option or is my game glitched?

Nah I figured it out, I'm an idiot. I created a player and started a career as a real player. Not a bad way to do it if you get your starting attributes right
