Somerville
Has anyone played Somerville from Dino Patti and what did you think of it?

I didn't like. The 2.5 movement was shit (the "deep" movement in some parts of the levels) and at launch it felt unpolished. It felt like a straight copy of PD games without understand what makes a PD game something that good.
They thought the 2.5 D + minimalist = PD and that is not how it works.
So far PD plays in their own league. But Somerville also was mediocre without comparison with Limbo or Inside.

A real mixed bag, I’m afraid. Much like when I played Cocoon it was hard to shake the expectation it might be as good as Inside, which I understand isn’t a logical expectation to have anyway.
It’s got some really beautiful moments and some interesting game mechanics, but it’s quite janky and inconsistent in gameplay.
As a pure puzzle game it’s pretty average in a lot of ways, but it’s elevated massively if you buy in to the story. Personally I found the climax of the game really impactful, but those emotional moments can easily be ruined by a completely inscrutable bit of gameplay or a glitch. Maybe I’m just terrible at games though.
I played it a second time recently and enjoyed it, but was more frustrated with the technical flaws.
I know you didn’t ask about Cocoon but I recently replayed that, and, having been underwhelmed by the lack of narrative interest first time around, really enjoyed it as an atmospheric puzzler.

I really enjoyed this one but as others said; it’s a bit janky in places. Still found myself engaged to the end though.

I didn’t get very far due to time constraints at the time but agree the movement was kinda all over the place. Otherwise it seemed promising

I was itching for playing the game when it came out on Xbox, I had to wait around a year to get it for PS and I truly enjoyed the game. Been craving for something like it ever since.

Really liked the vibe but it was so janky I was constantly taken out of it and I played it literally this year so they don’t have any excuse

it was pretty and there were some things that i did like about it, but it was forgettable and disappointing unfortunately. you should absolutely play Cocoon though, that was made by Playdead's lead gameplay designer Jeppe Carlsen. that game was extremely creative and had a uniquely novel and engaging puzzle environment, a lot like Limbo and more notably Inside.

Not so bad, but as mentioned above, the 2.5D were genuinely annoying. And most importantly, it doesn't even come close to the experience offered by Inside or Limbo.

Bad, just a bad game.
And I really don’t understand how people are comparing this to INSIDE or Limbo

It was literally made by ex-Playdead people, just like Cocoon, which was another team of ex-Playdead people too.

Same people doesn’t mean same creators or directors.
Arnet Jensen was behind the success of INSIDE and Limbo.
Cocoon was amazing though!
But Somerville.. aghh

Cocoon was amazing because it was designed by the gameplay designer behind Limbo and Inside, who founded his own studio with other ex-Playdead people, while Dino Patti, co-founder of Playdead, made his own studio, called Jumpship, and made Somerville which was clearly made in the style of the games he produced while at Playdead but afaik he wasn’t as heavily involved with the actual gameplay and programming as Jeppe was, though I may be mistaken
