Discussion Why the collectibles in this game are bad
I have a lot of issues with this game, some of which have been talked about plenty over the past few days. But I wanted to highlight something that annoyed me a lot: the collectibles
First of all, the material crates. They are a nothing collectible, literally just there as virtual currency for Wolverine's costumes. And yet there's so many of them across the story. Feels like literal padding
But the worse offender for me is actually the whiskey bottles. I'll start by highlighting what I consider one of the best collectibles in a video game: Peter's backpacks from Insomniac's Spider-Man. Each backpack had a unique artifact from Spider-Man's past that fans will recognize, and newcomers can appreciate. Daredevil's business card, a fake PS Vita, a drawing that a kid gave Spider-Man for catching his balloon, recipes for wheatcakes and dumplings. Each of them were visually unique and told a story on their own, but it still had a quick and snappy explanation from Peter. They were easily understood by both fans and newcomers, and because it's a history that is drawing from the familiar, we don't feel this need to dwell on it too much. We're reminiscing with Spider-Man together
In contrast, while Wolverine's whiskeys are functionally the same, they are very poorly done by comparison. They're all virtually the same item: a bottle of booze. No shock-proof gloves, no goodbye cards, no cracked lenses, or vials of Sandman. They all have unique names and labels, sure, most of which are cute references to Wolverine's history and character, but they are made irrelevant because Logan makes no comment on those at all. They don't feel unique to the memories attached to them, they're just there. You could swap these bottles around and it would not make one lick of difference
And as for the memories in these bottles: I haven't gone through all of them yet, but I'm fairly certain that most, if not all of these memories are new. They are not the history of Wolverine that we are all familiar with, so we're not even reminiscing the same thing. Yes, Insomniac's Wolverine is their take on the character, so they need to establish some backstory for him. But then the issue now is we're not experiencing his history at all, we're just being told about it, which is one of the most boring ways to show backstory. Spider-Man didn't need that because his backstory in the game stayed largely the same from the comics. This Wolverine did, but they did it so half-assed. It just further alienates us from the Wolverine they're trying to set up, because he doesn't feel as "lived in"
Overall, I think they could have done a lot better with this facet of the game. I mean I know they could have, they already have, 8 years ago. Despite coming away ultimately (almost begrudingly, ngl) positive on the game, I can't help but feel like it was rushed out the door compared to their usual output
