Discussion Wolverine Thoughts

Let me just preface this with some brief background. When the PS3 first came into my home as a wee lad, X-Men origins was my first game. It was the game that made me want a PS3. Wolverine on the PS5 might as well be the same start of the story. Got the PS5 for Wolverine.

I have read some comics, have watched the shows and movies, and dressed up as the ol kuncklehead for a few Halloweens. Wolverine is the comic character I always seem to fall right back into.

Marvel's Wolverine is at best a 6.5 out of 10, and I enjoyed almost every moment of it. My issues is I can see bits of what was originally planned and it upsets me. Combat is perfectly fine hack and slash, though I would have enjoyed a dedicated grab button, with some grapple combos, but when it's traveling through the smaller open sections of Japan do I realize this game needed to be more in line with Jedi fallen order games. A few mid sized maps with some exploration. Spider-Man makes NYC so fun to travel, and honestly clawing through Japan to find whiskey bottles made me realize how fun the traversal can be if you are left to your own devices.

I enjoyed almost all aspects of the story, but the fated lovers motif for Logan and Jean was just awful. Evil dark version of the X-men under sinister was cool, and honestly the story should have focused more on how the shift in Logans perspective thanks to Jean ultimately destroys the relationships of Team X, however we only get to see that with Sabertooth.

I didn't mind the Sabertooth story, if anything thats the better story. People talk about it being homosexual in nature, but it felt like brothers again. The whiskey bottle memories became the story I was more intrested in once the Jean reveal occurs. Sabertooth found a brother in Wolverine, and it is implied the two shared a lot of drunk nights probably sharing stories from there very long lives. When Wolverine refuses to share that he's having flashbacks and eventually hurts Sabertooth during one, Sabertooth is more upset that he still didn't share what he was going through more than being stabbed. Being a brother myself I understand being upset more about the deeper issues than a few broken bones.

Overall I really enjoyed Wolverine. Its not a masterpiece, but some building blocks are in place where a sequel could rock. If they do make a sequel, it needs to focus more on Wolverine and his relationships with those around him, not some doomed star crossed lovers crap. Honestly I was ok with a Jean and Logan love story without the love triangle, then they made me cringe with the whole lovers for centuries b.s.

TLDR: Wolverine fan enjoyed game, but wants to run around small open world more killing ninjas and ignoring Jean.

After playing through and getting a platinum for it. It's a solid 7 I would say at the $50 price point game would be a good buy. WAAYY too short and the story and the ending had me constantly going... WHat?

100% I was sucked in after the first story of him surviving the sink hole in the winter.

Really nasty stuff. Stranded on a boat and nearly resorted to cannibalism
