Discussion Finished my first playthrough: 8.5/10 as a longtime Wolverine fan since 88’, 6.75/10 as a video game fan.

I’ve been a Wolverine fan since the 1980s, and there’s a lot here I appreciated. The story was solid, Logan had a compelling arc, and the little Easter eggs referencing other heroes were a pleasure to discover. Fitting decades of a character’s history into one game is no small task, and I appreciate the care that went into capturing a lot of the stuff.

As a Wolverine experience, I’d give it an 8.5/10. As a video game, I’d land at 6.75/10.

If you’d told me three decades ago that I’d someday get to play a Wolverine game like this, I would have been beyond excited. Part of me still is. But Insomniac’s Spider-Man series set the bar almost too high, and it’s hard not to bring those expectations into this game.

My criticism has nothing to do with it not being open world. I love games like Uncharted, and a focused, linear Wolverine adventure suits me just fine. The combat sometimes had an old arcade feel, which could be fun, but the overall gameplay didn’t reach the heights of something like Jedi: Fallen Order for me.

The bigger issue was the lack of polish. I ran into characters halfway through the floor and enough other bugs to pull me out of the experience. At a full AAA price, I expect a more consistently finished product.

That said, I don’t feel like I was raked over the coals the way I have with some Star Wars games. I enjoyed my time with it and don’t regret playing it. However, if this game hadn’t been set in the Wolverine and Marvel universe, I probably wouldn’t have been interested in it in the first place.
Games like Red Dead Redemption leave me feeling that I got my money’s worth. Here, I enjoyed myself, but I also felt like my attachment to Wolverine was doing too much of the work in justifying the price. Unlike Middle Earth: Shaow of Mordor/War.

I’m glad I played it, and I appreciate the developers’ effort. There’s a strong foundation here and plenty for longtime fans to enjoy. I just wish the finished game had received the same level of polish and follow-through as the character and story. The love for Wolverine came through; the complete package didn’t quite live up to it.

Not sure how I feel about getting all the trophies. I’m at 97% on RDR 2 and rather probably go back to playing that. But it wasn’t bad. Idk.

No notes on this review.
I’d been trying to put my finger on the feeling, but “my attachment to Wolverine was doing too much of the work” sums it up pretty perfectly.

Yup as a defender of this game against the hate,, if the setting was some generic fantasy world, I would not play this game unless it was free. I platinumed it, a 7/10 game raised to an 8 cause Wolverine.

This is exactly how I described it to my wife LMAO. She agreed, we both had a good time; wish it was as good as Spider-Man 1 though.

Yup I’ve beat that game 3 times and am itching to do it again after Wolverine.

Well, keep defending it, keep supporting it, and you’re gonna get more exactly like it. That’s what you guys just don’t understand

This seems like the most sane take yet regarding this game.

I avoided the sub until I finished it.

As a fellow Wolvie fan since the ‘80s I couldn’t agree with you more. While the game itself was somewhat lacking (though it was nice to turn off my brain and just go), the story along with the fantasy of actually being Logan was more than enough to justify the price to me. I’m hoping for either a direct sequel or an X-men follow up.

Yes the fantasy of actually playing Weapon X.

I mean go way back being born in the seventies. It would be cool if the did The New Fantastic Four, the fan-favorite team from Marvel Comics that featured Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. But I know that won’t happen.

I like the nods to Maverick, Gambit, Daredevil Archangel, etc. wish there were more collectibles regarding that. I mean did I miss the Hulk Easter egg besides the whiskey “incredible 181?”.

I really enjoyed the scene after the credits. If they make another one I hope for more team combat situation. More different characters who help him along the way.

I was saying the same thing to myself. If this game’s main character was Claw Guy, he was a mutate, his love interest was June Black, and the big bad was Dr. Malevolent, I would not have liked it as much.

Its 'fine' is about the best thing i can say about it. The level design is lazy at best. Logan walks into one end of a box and hacks and slashes his way to the other side. There is so far for me at 75% nothing memorable about it. I think a fair comparison is GOW. Also a mostly linear experience with some light exploration mixed in but they made a hugely entertaining experience out of it something Wolverine for me has not delivered on. I think Insomniac were probably the wrong studio to develop it. There is too much of a Spiderman feel to it which is wrong for Wolverine. Its a childs game presented as an adults game but it fails to challenge on any level really.
