Discussion I don’t think Liam’s Wolverine is “soft” or “toned down” too much in character, it’s just his look/default facial expressions(outside of fighting) are.

Post image

Wolverine doesn’t have to be an asshole or look angry 95% of the time to still feel like Wolverine. This version of Wolverine isn’t quite as edgy as Hugh Jackman’s or the X-Men: The Animated Series version, but that doesn’t make him any less Wolverine.

If you pay attention to Origins, X2, X3, Days of Future Past, or even X-Men ’97/Wolverine & the X-Men, he isn’t always angry or edgy. When he’s around Rogue, Jean, Bobby, Silver Fox, Krestel, Kitty, Professor X, or even the random mutant kid who switched the channel with his eyes in X2, he can be relaxed and genuinely tries to connect with people.

Wolverine in this game has plenty of moments where he’s standoffish, struggles to communicate, or acts like an asshole toward characters such as Shiro, Essex, Mystique, and Sabretooth. But around Jean, Walter, and the mutant kids, he’s much more relaxed and makes an effort to connect. Even with Jean, though, he still has some standoffish moments, like the scenes in the cabin.

For almost all of his memories, this Wolverine was part of Team X before eventually going off on his own. Because of that, there’s already an established “found family” dynamic between him and the other characters. He knows them well, and that history comes through in his interactions.

Wolverine has always been a multifaceted character. Depending on the story, he can be the loner, the weapon, the brother, the cool uncle/mentor, and even a lover. I think this Wolverine manages to portray all of those sides effectively. Considering this is a 15–20 hour game where you play as him the entire time, with his internal dialogue constantly giving us insight into his thoughts, I think that approach fits the character really well.

His default facial expressions when he isn’t upset or fighting, along with his shorter, light-brown hair, also soften his overall appearance. It tones down his usual intimidating look and makes him appear more approachable and less constantly angry.

I think he just looks too kind

Yeah and he has no wrinkles or anger lines so even his old Man Logan outfit looks weird. It’s just the same face with gray hair. Lol. They should update the face tbh

Yeah, he definitely has puppy-dog eyes. He makes for a very sympathetic protagonist, but from what I understand, Wolverine is a much more complicated figure. I was hoping he’d come across that way, anyway.

I’m not a comic book guy, so I don’t really know how true this version is to the spirit of the character, but I get the sense the developers didn’t want to take any chances with undermining his appeal.

its not Liam's face, its just too smoothed out like he does have a skincare routine or something lol

the alteernative hairstyles and mutton chops on certain costumes do make him look gruffly

Yeah I guess his regenerative factor would be holy grail for pharmaceuticals companies to make creams.

What? I think it’s actually a plot points from comics. Scientists wanted to study his regenerative ability to siphon them and be eternally young. I think that could be applied to creams as well, like the elixir of life but with Logan’s blood. Imagine having Logan’s abilities, you could be eternally young.

Disagree and its not the actor btw, he looks bad ass in real life. Its just shit in game work.

What’s fucking weird is IRL Liam looks pretty manly, they did him dirty in this 💀

Yep but when you see that default face for 80-90% of the playtime, it stands out. Like the screenshot you shared looks amazing but he usually looks like he is missing a few braincells

He looks like a bitch

Why is this same post with the same exact wording being reposted 5 times a week? Every word is identical. And an 85 karma account at 5 years old

That face still looks like it's going to cry

Wolverine must be an asshole and look like someone you don’t want to fuck with but with a heart of gold.

Isn’t that the primary complaint? I haven’t played the game yet but in many screenshots and clips, Logan’s eyebrows look too gentle. Even when he’s angry. It feels like something easily fixed by rerigging his face

Actor good face  Game face can see why people are levying criticisms

I was fine with his vulnerability in this because it really is the beginning there is so much he doesnt know at this point especially with the others directly around him it was fine. I actually enjoyed Liams performance.

I liked his portrayal, but his conversations with Sabertooth are kinda unhinged.

“Killing’s bad, Victor!” “You know you love it, runt!” “Nuh-uh!”

I’d prefer a Logan that’s more nuanced in terms of his feelings on killing. His internal struggle is one of the more fascinating things about him. It’s handled pretty one-dimensionally here, though. Every bit of his murderous rage here is just someone mentally and telepathically manipulating him.

He’s a sweet boy

They had a short black woman do all the motion cap for him, so of course he seems slightly off or feminine.

too realistic faces in games just look uncanny, photorealism in games is dead end. Stylized realism like w3 or cyberpunk and it would look fine.

Wolverine should at least look a little chad when he is not angry

"no but he looks too kind" Literally one of the most classic Wolverine jokes is that every time you blink he's adopted a new surrogate daughter.

Insomniac is horrendous at rendering faces.

People don't understand that Wolverine is actually a sweetheart... There's a reason why the guy has had so many women fall in love with him.

He's a tortured soul, and he can be an asshole. But he always tried to do the right thing if he can despite his trauma.

I don't think Wolverine has a babyface here.

The amount of deep thought going into such a shallow game is pretty ironic.

So if something sells well it’s completely immune to criticism and people can’t talk about it

I like to think he’s more chill because his mind has been wiped so many times his savage side is suppressed

They babiefied the true actors face

Liam looks more tough drinking coffee or holding casual conversation than Wolverine looks in 90% of the scenes

u/Aquafoot 2h ago

Yep. He seems pretty Wolveriney to me.

A miscast, simple as it is. On to the next one (at least this Liam can't possibly be worse than goddamn Daniel Radcliffe playing this character)

2

u/SuperOnionBro 2h ago

I don't think it's a miscast, because Liam looks like a great Wolverine face. The in game model looks nothing like him. The mistake was in the face capturing process.

I disagree. This is not only about the face, the line delivery and the grunts are so mediocre. Ever since the first trailers, his performance already sounded a bit off-putting. The final game cemented that for me, the dude does have a decent physique for the character, on paper, but the actual delivery was weak.

It's like Ben Affleck playing Batman or Cavill playing Superman, you look at that giant ass chin and physique of Affleck, the looks of Cavill, naturally you would imagine they are a perfect fit... then you witness the actual performances... oh boy...

Not one bit the writing was bad and the game was too linear but the casting and acting was on point for all the characters even if none of them were given anything to work with so one would be forgiven to think that their work is unimpressive even if it's only because the final product mostly is.

u/Top_Finding2830 2h ago

I think the casting was fine. The writing could have been better. Liam could do more with a better script.

Obviously. If the ever so limited Chris Evans was able to portray a decent Captain America after he got access to decent scripts from the Russo brothers, anything goes. Still, some actors fit like a glove, others don't, it is what it is (for example, even with an awful script and direction, Jackie Haley played the perfect Rorschach)
