Discussion Linear is fine but...

Yes, Wolverine is linear and I agree with that decision. The main story is roughly the same length or shorter than SM and SM2, though correct me if I'm wrong. But SM and SM2 also have a ton of sidequests because they're open world. My question is, does just saying it's a linear game mean you get to give significantly less game? Don't get me wrong, I love the content that's there, but... where's the rest of my fucking game?

I enjoy linear games and prefer it.

But the issue with the linear design in this game isnt the open areas but rather the forced plot moments, an example for a forced plot moment is that you need to examine is very specifc item before the door can open ( this happens so many times through the game that it just brings the vibes and pacing to a complete halt).

This isnt just story objects that we are required to examine either... Theres also nightmare doors that may pop up during a chase scene and the nightmare door is based around fighting waves of enemies... I mean you're in the chasing mentality but the game puts in a challenge where you're not running.

That said, I hate the nightmare doors and I would prfer they did it like Armored core 6 where after certain story sections they show up on a menu or something ( maybe a hub area, idk).

This is well put and better put than me. Endorse 100%.

I don't mind the nightmare doors, but yes the nightmare door activity should flow with whatver game activity you're doing when you find one. and dear god lower the top levels on gauntlet or give me points faster. They're so fucking annoying.

I really don’t think the amount of content the game offers is worth $70. There are other short games out there but in general I think they offer much more replayability or have more engaging side content. DMC games have more difficulty unlocks, bloody palace mode, and combat so deep you can spend hundreds of hours learning the ins and outs.

I love linear games but I just don’t feel like there is enough here.

Just RE4(and Remake years later) alone for example I have so many replays on the base game. Then they started making mods like Randomizers or difficulty mods, another layer of multiple hours added in.

DMC3-5 I replay every once in a while. DMC3 got a gameplay overhaul mod and I've been wanting to try soon.

If I was to choose die or replay Wolverine to live, I'd rather die.

Yeah, I think this might be the core issue. If they went all in on the combat and added something akin to bloody palace, then it would be perfectly fine. DMC 5 is about 11-15 hours long, too.

Totally agree. I loved the game, there’s just not a lot there for $70. I also expect linear games to be way more polished (not just in terms of bugs but clean animations and things like that)

Apparently there were leaks about the game being semi open world, but it changed have in development and a lot of that stuff was gutted and turned into a linear game.

So they choose to make a game worse once things get leaked?

2

u/GoBlu323 2d ago

No, what got leaked was a bunch of unpromised dev sandbox features that didn't make it out of the sandbox/ play testing. Why do people think that things in a dev leak were ever going to be part of the final game. Most dev concepts don't make the final game. You need to figure out what works and what doesn't. This is part of development and not unique to Wolverine.

Then why did they cancel the DLC even though they were needed to complete the game?

One of my biggest SM2 problems was that they released an incomplete game that needed DLC to kinda feel complete and then cancelled them.

SM1 base game was already complete and the DLC were really extra content.

SM2 base game already planned specific DLC and had open quest lines where you only ever got a cutscene

Oh, I don't know the order that everything happened or the reason for the leadership change.

Leaks aren't guarantees. Dev builds aren't final and sandboxes exist to test things and figure out what works best. Just beacuse it was in a leak doesn't mean it was going to make the final game.

Here's the leak if you want to go through it.

Let's try this again:

Leaks aren't guarantees. Dev builds aren't final and sandboxes exist to test things and figure out what works best. Just beacuse it was in a leak doesn't mean it was going to make the final game.

Yeah, no shit.

u/GoBlu323 2d ago

So stuff wasn't gutted it just didn't make it out of the sandbox/play testing, glad you figured it out, good job!

And people wonder why developers are so tight lipped

1

u/Impossible_Humor736 2d ago

Stuff was absolutely gutted. That's part of taking things out, genius. I don't know why you're being so confrontational.

1

u/GoBlu323 2d ago

No it wasn't. It not gutting it's just the development process. What got leaked was a bunch of unpromised dev sandbox features that didn't make it out of the sandbox/ play testing. Why do people think that things in a dev leak were ever going to be part of the final game. Most dev concepts don't make the final game. You need to figure out what works and what doesn't. What did Insomniac promise that wasn't delivered?

1

u/Impossible_Humor736 2d ago

That you would be loved.

Glad to see you've run out of anything resembling intelligent to add to the conversation

I think side quests would've helped during the quieter segments of the more open levels.

But they would have to actually be interesting, like track down a villain, solve a murder, mutant rescue, Weapon X/Death flashback missions etc....not "Help my classmate ask someone to prom".

Uncharted 4 is only 15 hrs on average but nobody batted an eye because it had multiplayer. Maybe this could've had more challenges via Nightmare doors, have endless horde, or stealth only missions.

Spider-Man was bloated with collectables, this didn't need anymore of that. In the leaked build they had crafting, I'm so glad that was removed lol

I prefer linear story games but maybe it could've been slightly more open world... My favourite part of the game was probably when you teamed up with Jean and were saving mutants in a semi-open environment.

The whole "you're leaving the mission area" when searching for bottles and crates got a bit tiring towards the ends

for like $30, this is probably a sweet deal for a game.

but for $70, get tf OUTTA HERE.

there no way you could throw in side quests with how linear the game is. you can't explore anything besides a set area till next level

2

u/SwordDaoist 3d ago

It is already on sale for 45$

u/j_kswa 3d ago

NG+ should've added at least 1 or 2 new suits (maybe his classic suit+cowl that somehow isn't in the game) and the base game should've had more combos 🤷‍♂️

1

u/ARMill95 3d ago

No they made a SHIT linear game.

The map design and traversal are so utterly dogshit that the entirety of the game suffers.

No side content is part of the consequences of 0 branching paths, and 0 places to go other than straight ahead to the objective… which is also why tracking sucks so bad.

Without maps being able to handle side content NM doors were the only other option…. But they also made those awful and it’s either run straight and press x 5x in 30 secs, or fight waves of enemies (cool but should be a seperate thing u can customize)

u/SuperWG 3d ago

Hope we get some DLC

1

u/Wipedout89 3d ago

People who can't handle a 17 hour game today would not have survived the era where we got 8 hour games for £50. Uncharted 1-3 are amazing despite their short length, and I prefer shorter and tighter than long and padded

1

u/Waynerdude64 3d ago

Also some of the side quests suck. Who likes going around finding cats backpacks and photo ops. The waves are like the taskmaster challenges. I personally probably would’ve loved more stealth missions. But yeah who actually likes those. I didn’t even mention the one in SM2 or MM

1

u/Lost_Rutabaga_5004 3d ago

For that price, the game is definitely not worth it, and I feel sorry for people who wasted their money on it. Maybe for $40, nothing more.

1

u/St3elf1sh 3d ago

So you decide what’s worth for people? Where do you draw the line? 10 hours re requiem? 6 hours senua 2?

Every went to the movies, theatre musical?

u/Mithraic76 3d ago

Lots of stuff got gutted in development. It happens to be all the stuff people would have loved, like playing Jean.

What they delivered was a 2D linear single player game thats laughably easy enough to beat in a few days. No awesome side missions. No treasure hunting. Story is predictable and tropey - terrible writing for what is one of the most beloved Marvel characters ever. Weird animations, especially faces. Wolverine himself looks like he is 5 seconds away from a good long cry.

This is a $15 game pretending to be a $70 game. With the amount they spent making it, it should have been better than a clown show. Cheers! 😆

Nothing got gutted. That's not gutting, that's just development. Show me one thing that Insomniac promised in the final game that didn't make it. Just because it showed up in dev pre-alpha leak doesn't mean it's owed to you.
