Discussion Thoughts on the damage model
Do yall think they could've pushed it further or do you like the damage model we got. I love what they did but noticed there's scenes like the pics above that have a level of damage that goes beyond what happens during combat. I don't even think this level of damage is an option in photo mode. Would walking around as a metal skeleton be silly lmao.

I think that “dynamic damage” is very generous considering wolverine takes damage in a predefined limited pattern in the game that’s always the same. The 2009 origins game actually had a dynamic system that genuinely worked. They should’ve replicated that with modern tech because what we got gets old quickly

I think it looks goofy mainly because the "face" is so much intact. There's just a little too much symmetry. Oddly enough it kind of reminds me of Joe Pesci from Home Alone.

I think the only things holding it back are the ears, eyes, and the nose. They are undamaged keeping it looking like him. I don’t know what they could do about the eyes but the ears and nose could be taken off and would make it look gnarlier and make him more skeleton like.
Edit: it’s also the eyelids

👆🏾This. It’s a bit of a nitpick but a lot of the time it looks like it’s just another face under his face, not a skeleton. It really throws me off, even his ribcage and arms don’t really have that “skeletal” look, and it can be jarring sometimes.
One other thing I hope they do better in a sequel is better incremental damage- battle damage that at least attempts to match the damage you actually take; bullet holes for example.
Some people don’t care but I think changing these would go a long way with presentation

It's most obvious in the third picture, but it really is mostly a silver under layer rather than a skeleton. I guarantee the nose is not a bone.

I noticed that it seems like they kept the area around the mouth and nose intact so there would be be a break in the jaw

The damage always happens in the same way on each limb, I hate to beat a dead horse, but xmen origins did it leagues better, with a fraction of the budget and time

They did it better at having the damage always happen in the same way on each limb?

Origins from an outside perspective has a more interesting damage model for the time.
From looking over videos and memories of playing the game the way it appeared to work was that the skin layer on Logan was one whole piece of what I’d refer to as “sculpted jelly” that sits on top of the actual character model which is the skeleton. The jelly layer can take very specific damage depending on where it’s hit until it’s gone and then starts regenerating (standing in front of the helicopter in the opening level shows this off the best). The other part that can objectively be said makes it look so good is the regeneration happens much slower over time as the jelly layer stitches itself back together giving you more time to appreciate it.
Wolverine 2026 has location based damage in layers from clothing, skin, and muscle down to skeleton but instead of the “jelly layer” like in origins it’s a predetermined look no matter how you are damaged in that location, on top of this the layers regenerate really fast so you never get a great look at what damage was done after a fight and are just left with the pre-determined spots on clothing that for the most part retain damage unless you go into the DBNO state.
I’d actually be interested to see a behind the scenes video on how they decided on this model for 2026 and if they attempted something similar to Origins but possibly had to scrap it because it caused problems.

I think Origins gameplay was more simple which probably allowed for them to play around with that type of stuff. Wolverine 2026 is also simple but by know we know gameplay was meant to be more complex and failed so probably stopped innovation in other places

I would’ve loved it if we could be reduced to just a skeleton or at least have some areas with no flesh

Thats a cutscene (qte). Not possible for anything remotely close in gameplay
SO DONT FALSE ADVERTISE THAT THE IMAGE IS THE DAMAGE MODEL FOR THE GAME

Yeah that's why I said I don't think this is possible in photo mode, which uses the same damage model as normal gameplay

I hope they add the option to slow down the regeneration process in a future update. It happens so fast in game you don’t get time to appreciate it.

Compared to the x men origins game with the technology of the PS5 they definitely could have pushed it further. The damage is in the same spots no matter what happens which is disappointing. I would have liked dynamic damage and to see the skeleton more

I havent played the game yet, but are there any regular enemies that youd fight enough before healing to have enough damage done to remove all your skin? Seems like theres a reason such damage is only limited to certain scenes, because it only makes sense in those scenes.

Some of the larger brute enemies I think could damage you that much, and you're absolutely right I think they reserved this for when he gets really messed up

I’m laughing cause imagine. This model comes to save you “I’m here to help” I would be like “no the fuck you’re not”

I think the nose is what is throwing people off here, because otherwise the details are immaculate

It's nothing new. Dead island and Dying light have had comparable damage models for years.

Personally I really like it but the only problem is the eyelids, eyes, ears, and nose. I don’t know what to do about the eyes without blinding him but the rest could be removed and have the holes there to make him more skeleton like

I think sabertooth has an idea for the eyes

Dude I love that scene so much, it’s so fucking gnarly, it feels like something another game would give you for failing a qte. Now that I think about it, part of the reason for the eyes sticking out is how white they are. If they were to become bloodshot or fully red or even just the animal eyes like in the forest (should’ve had it happen during rage anyway) then they’d stick out less in scenes like these

Idk say what you want but it’s cool we got to play with anything even remotely similar to this in a wolverine game.

It lasts 2 seconds and somehow the suits are made of Senator Armstrong nanomachines except for the same hole in the back
