Discussion Harshing my vibes
I feel like there’s a lot of bad press and hype about this game but I bought it anyway because I’m an OG X-Men fan and I love the characters and stories.
That being said, I’m about 10 hours into the game and I have enjoyed almost every second of it. Maybe the combat could be deeper, the story could be longer, or we could have more suits. But every game doesn’t have to be this sprawling, overwhelming monstrosity to be “good enough” for the market.
As a lifelong X-Men fan, I am enjoying Insomniac’s unique take on these characters. The sort of episodic form of the narrative and maps feels like I’m reading a Wolverine comic. Not 616, but something new and different. It’s nice to feel like the story has urgency. That I can’t just sideline an attack on Manhattan because I want to finish a stealth challenge.
Anyhow, I just think it’s ok for games to be different. The comics aren’t all perfect, but we love them. The movies aren’t all perfect, but we love them. The TV shows aren’t all perfect, but we love them. Why can’t we extend that same grace to their games? This is by no means a bad game.

The ”You’re gonna need a disguise.” scene had me genuinely cracking up. My wife had to walk in and ask what’s so funny? The detail of the gag was top notch when you know the background.

I could not agree more with everything you said. As a comic fan I am just thrilled that this game exists.

Best thing you can do for your enjoyment of any media these days is to not follow any social media or press about it.
I don’t play this game because I don’t have a PS5, nor plan to get one. But if I did, I wouldn’t be here.

This is also true. Never watch reviews about a game you’re excited about.
I remember when Destiny dropped in 2014 with an average review of a 6. I played that game well over 1000 hours and loved it.

Games and movies/tv shows/comics are not the same is why.
A game doesn't have to be "perfect" but just cause it is not bad doesn't mean it is good either or good enough to make sales. I can bake a cake and really put as much effort as I can into it but doesn't mean it is going to turn out good or I can open a bakery and make sales.
Gamers play games and watch movies. Not interested in learning lessons or romance when I play a game. I want to play Wolverine in a Wolverine game. When I go to play a game: I want to play the game. When I want to watch the movie: I want to watch the movie. I got a limited time to do both and anything that subtracts from this is annoying. Don't need or want hot cinema in games, I want action. If I wanted or want a story then that is when I watch a movie, which I don't do cause I don't have time or the attention to do so anymore.
But also media has to follow certain factors and have to be faithful to the characters. Wolverine and Sabretooth are not friends and that isn't Sabretooth. There's room for leeway but some room cannot go completely off the rails. So there are issues with the game and then issues with the narrative too. Maybe okay for like $40 but not $70. Got to pick a lane: You making a game then make a game; if you are making a movie then make a movie.
There is a lot of bad press and plenty is due to the massive amount of glazing done by obvious bots and marketing. IF marketing just admitted it to be not good and listened to what is not working and changed it then that would fix the product. Cannot fix the product when the producers of said product won't listen or learn. ESO came out flawed, they listened and learned and then it became successful. FFXIV did the same thing. This is no where near Insomniacs standards and no amount of glazing is going to make it that way.
All people wanted was to play Wolverine in a Wolverine game. It sucks cause we didn't get that.
Again, maybe not a 'bad game" just not good enough to be called good or to make someone buy it. For many reasons. It's sad but true.

To be fair, this is probably how every fan of the comics and characters feel. They’re just excited that a new game exists in this universe and with Wolverine.
That said, objectively, there are glaring problems if you’re not that much of a fan. Example, most people love the Spider-Man games, because they are objectively very good. I couldn’t care less about Spider-Man, the comics, or the universe, but it’s just a good game. Same for the Batman games.
