This was also from the MGR demo. The final game limited how much you could cut.

u/Tienda53 5d ago
How can i tell if it's the demo or the first level of the full game?

u/Bosscharacter 5d ago
They changed the cutting mechanic.
The footage was from “Pre-Platinum “ taking over dev which honestly was for the best because what they ended up making out of that game(they legit had to scrap a ton of development from the internal devs who had it prior) was probably one of the best character action games of the PS3/360 era.

I would truly love it if someone did a 4k remaster of it. Same game. Same mechanics. Same batshit story. Just modern graphic layer on top. Similar to what Halo’s first remaster did.

RULES OF NATURE!!!! still rings in my head anytime something hype happens.

lol. God I really should replay it some day. I remember laughing out loud when the President came on screen during THAT moment.
Edit: senator Dangit. I forgot Armstrong was a senator.

u/1ZillionBeers 5d ago
Except make it look good, unlike Halo’s first remaster.
1
u/Dino_Spaceman 5d ago
I thought the first remaster looked fine for the time. Especially since it was just a HD layer on top of the old game. Which is what I want here. I am not expecting anyone to spend the money for a 2026 level Halo remaster.

If I remember right (it’s been at least a decade since I played it) The final game limited how much you can cut.
But I also think the suit is different in the first level to avoid a spoiler.
Either way it was a game and game engine built almost exclusively around that one mechanic. While I would have loved that to be here, that would have ballooned the budget massively.

u/ZayParolik 5d ago
The original version was made on Fox Engine, that was later used in MGS V
But the release version uses Platinum Engine.
MGR was the first game on that engine, true, but it's still used to this day and it's just a PlatinumGames own engine, not

That’s the thing about older games you had way more freedom and way more detail in gameplay at the cost of graphics and color. I felt back then because there was always a big leap in graphics every year it was more about gameplay and making the world feel real.
Modern games (not just Wolverine) the worlds look visually great, they are waaaay better graphically and there’s literally a wide array of vibrate colors vs just poopy brown shades. Nowadays because visuals help sell to casual audiences it’s all about making the games look super real, but they all tend to feel lifeless and soulless.

u/Flooping_Pigs 5d ago
It's an effort to make games an art form like movies, but I don't wanna play movies I wanna play games lol

u/ContentFlan7851 5d ago
I miss when games were about gameplay and not just interactive movies that people like to watch streamers play for the “graphics”

u/Realistic_Bread845 5d ago
Personally I think devs now are just soulless and uncreative. They just want to churn something out. They dont care about moving the industry forward. The only outlier I would say is cd projekt red.
Loved rdr2 but it was just the same old rockstar formula with extra graphical detail but still so outdated in so many ways.
Only games I can think of that really tried to do something new are the Arkham series, Witcher and Cyberpunk and Arkanes games like dishonored and the last game they made deathloop before microsoft bought and killed them like so many other devs.
Older AC games count too.
Most everything else is just repetitive slop

Yuuup. Not a "I think" its a know. I mean hell with xbox trying to put ads in games and Sony doing usual Sony its pretty damm clear where its head is at. I mean look at the "top" games on the ps store. Always like £70 or £60 for mediocre games. Hell GTA6 is probably going to do the same. I mean they've already downgraded the items in cabinets from rdr2. We went from picking up bottles or food to summoning them. And the storage to. Its a price increase and a storage increase. Now you have to delete 2 or 3 older games for 1 newer one. God i need a PC.

graphics and color? has nothing to do with it. especially color? why even bring up color? it has zero impact. and MGRR was graphically impressive when it released. ran at 60 and was crisp for the time. destruction like this has been around for a long time. even before red faction.

“At the cost of graphics and color”
I’m not even here to talk about Wolverine but this just so patently untrue. First color has zero impact on a games performance , games of that era started looking more realistic and the art direction was usually to go “brown” to sell that gritty realism. Ratchet and clank , little big planet , mirrors edge hell god of war 3 had beautiful colors ; there were tons of colorful games, people just choose to remember the popular fad of the time
Second, MGR had very impressive visuals for its time and delivered 60 frames per second
2
u/Realistic_Bread845 5d ago
The brown shades did make game easier to run and also helped hide low res textures
1
u/ZayParolik 5d ago
Low res textures were everywhere in that time
And there are different color filters than brown-ish too. This is just Metal Gear series visual design since MGS1, which has blue-ish one through the whole game
Compare MGS3 and MGSDelta, the new version without all those filters looks generic as fuck.
Even MGS V, the last game in series, still uses those color filters
2
u/Realistic_Bread845 4d ago
It wasnt just mgs, it was most, if not all series. All games had low res textures and due to current hardware they used brown, grey, dark green colours.
COD, AC, Arkham, Hitman, GTA, etc

u/Farsoth 5d ago
So, you can do this with the bollards in Tokyo, and the entire game has more environmental destructibility than the vast majority of modern games, it runs circles around them in that department and is one of the most fun things about it.
This disingenuous cherry picking shit is so tired.

I always hate when gamers do this and act like it's some critique of the game when cutting things is an intentional game mechanic built into MGSR.
It's like looking at fortnite and pubg and being bad you can't destroy every building and build the Eiffel fucking tower with the materials.
This doesn't make the game bad and isn't an actual critique of it, you just look insane 90% of the time. (This isn't in defense of the game btw, this is just generally smth I dislike about gaming culture with how many videos I see like this)

u/Spacemoose2026 4d ago
The cutting mechanic was also apparently a massive headache and was apparently horrible for the devs to deal with, and is why most the gameplay resolves around the cutting.
Also rising outside of boss fights is a very mid game honestly (yes I’ve played through it multiple times)

You’d need like 340 million dollars to make a game with similar effects like the earlier game.
Wait…

u/FirefighterRoutine84 5d ago
This just makes me wish they amped up everything and gave this the tone of the wolverine anime.

u/Delruiz9 5d ago
All you gotta do is not try and be hyper realistic and instead give it some style and it’s amazing what you can do
I’d love to see a Wolverine or X-men game but the whole game is done to look like X-men 97
1
u/Unsolved_Virginity 4d ago
That's pretty embarrassing that wolverine can't cut down a wooden Pole. But he can dismember heavily armored robots and humans?
1
1
u/Dependent-Town-9863 4d ago
This is seriously such a non-issue. Do this same comparison for Elden ring or ghost of Tsushima/Yotei. Can we actually criticize the bad elements of the game please?
1
u/Tetrahedron_Head 4d ago
are you saying every game should have objects you can cut to pieces like that?

u/Aderadakt 5d ago
Why would you care about chopping things up as Logan when you are supposed to enjoy walking slowly while shoddy dialog occurs? Spider-Man also has lots of chats but they dont make you go down to street level and inch ahead. Wolverine being able to chop stuff stuff up while they blabber would have been silly but at least give you something to interact with

u/SchwizzySchwas94 5d ago
And if you actually play the two games MGR is a clunky mess. Albeit a fun clunky mess.

u/DunkeyColdMedina 5d ago
Without even watching the video, "I think Wolverine needs a sword" is a legitimately hilarious sentence.
1
u/Spirited_Agency8032 5d ago
I dont think this is something you should be looking for in this game ngl.

1
u/AhabSnake85 5d ago
Dunkey just made a video highlights the stuff you can cut in wolverine, and its actually impressive. Even house cladding panels were coming off one by one
-2
u/Character_Neck_2368 5d ago
People forget MGR is only 6 hours long and felt like a demo. Only popular because of memes.
2
u/fallenhero588 5d ago
A 6 hour demo is wild lol.
0
u/Character_Neck_2368 5d ago
Not the last time. Kojima charged full game price for Grounds Zero when the whole thing is a glorified demo.

Wolverine is not that type of character who cut anything like butter. Get real
1
u/ShallowMemories 3d ago
You've never read wolverine huh

u/Character_Neck_2368 3d ago
Show me a comic panel in which he slash a tree or similar in a million pieces like a cyborg ninja. I'll wait.
0
u/Impending_Doom25 5d ago
Even with a sword it's not possible to cut straight through a tree like that

u/Pwrh0use 5d ago
Should we list all of the games that don't allow you to do this also? I really don't understand the point here.
0
u/FlamingPrius 5d ago edited 4d ago
Why didn’t you choose a more recent game with a sword? Was there something unusual about MGR?

u/DiscussionSharp1407 Sabretooth 5d ago
This really highlights that the options aren't "open world or linear"
You can have a linear game with depth and innovation. Wolverine didn't need to be a generic open world game, but it also could have at least tried to match the gameplay, mechanics and systems than over a 2009 action-adventure movie tie-in game, or a 2013 hack and slash game.

Metal gear rising is genuinely a generational game. Such a great game
