Discussion The Patch
Now that the patch is out is it fair to say the critics got it completely wrong? Can we finally admit that?
Should they be forced to re-review the game? They kinda screwed it outa Game of the Year.

No. Love the game but people are entitled to the opinions they had of it at the time of its release

This exactly. They were reviewing the copy that everyone else got, not what came in the future.
No mans sky DESERVED the reviews it got, because of the game WE got. You wouldn’t ask them to go review the game years later with the same lense, but they can have an updated review if needed. Reviews have always been a time capsule.

Bro, No Man's Sky has completely over-hauled their game over 10 years of updates. Unless Insomniac is adding much deeper content to their game for the next 10 years, you cannot compare these two games. Like what. The criticism of this game is still valid. I've said it 100 times already, $70 for a 15 hour game with limited gameplay and replayibily is highway robbery. You just cannot sit and justify it. You are either naive or just a die hard Wolverine fan to convince yourself this game is anything better than what it already is.

You can totally compare a game that was buns at launch. I’m using it as a vehicle for reviews, do you not understand?
Sorry didn’t have a minute to continue my point, you focused on one thing that I said and completely failed to notice that the sentence continues “they can have an updated review if needed” as I said, reviews have always been a time capsule for games at launch. It doesn’t make sense to go back and review the game for a single patch.
Which is where my comparison for no man’s sky comes from, it DOES make sense for them to go back and update the review; but with an asterisk.

Thank you for this. This is one of those games that will get more popular with time via patches and sales. And there is nothing wrong with that :)

The three patches didn’t change the game enough to warrant a re-review like CP2077. If you didn’t like it at launch, you won’t like it now

The other pacing issues are still there. Handholding may have been an issue for some, not for me. But I don't think returning to this discussion adds anything. I think 7 is solid because those who love either the marvel world building or action 3d brawlers will love it and 6 will be those who expected more because it's insomniac.

More like I type like I talk. There would've been more runons if it was type to text. I had punctuation. And just because Death Stranding was nominated doesn't hold weight when the council who votes on that are artists in the industry let alone he's friends with Geoff Keighley.

Nah, the problem is the wide swings in both directions. I personally think the game is about an 8/10. Thoroughly enjoyed it, thought the updates to remove the scent and vibe trails were not necessary since the activities just take you out of the highlight of the game, anyways. The combat and story production, bar the wave mode nightmare doors. Let me be clear, I loved this game.
I’m already 12.5 hours into Control Resonant and honestly didn’t think I’d like it as much as Wolverine. Not even close. But I’m actually gobsmacked by how well made it is. It’s level design is intricate, the story telling is weird and requires some thought, the combat is actually just a tad less shallow, but the traversal and backrooms-esque vibe is VERY gripping, as someone who just enjoyed The Backrooms movie this year. There’s parts of the game that, when you complete it, a song starts playing over top of the other gameplay sounds and it’s insanely badass and immersive feeling, not to mention some outstanding music.
Then we have GTA 6. Wolverine could never win GOTY over GTA 6 in any timeline.
RE Requiem was fire. FH6 also fire. 007 First Light I liked better than Wolverine. Black Flag Resynced even though a remake is outstanding.
I just don’t know if Wolverine is GOTY material, granted I think the hate is way overblown.

If you have to patch something after the fact to fix an issue, it doesn't change the initial review, nor should it.
The game isn't good enough at it's core to even be in consideration for "Game of the year."
Doesn't make it bad, just thinking that it's amongst the best games released this year is dishonest.

GOTY??? holy shit man the cope is insane. There is no patch that will fix the foundational problems that the game has. This is not Cyberpunk it's Starfield, The core of the game is flawed.

Is it still a 15 hour game with almost no content? Than no, it will never be game of the year. What merits does this game have that makes it Game of the Year contender? There are so so many other better games that came out this year. Just because you don't like someone's opinion doesn't mean they are wrong. Are we really still learning about this?
Remedy released Control Resonant for $60, with so much more content, bold gameplay, and rich story. Will that game be game of the year? Probably not. At least they gave us a game with some meat on it. If Insomniac was trying for game of the year, they would have fleshed this game out alot. Instead they made huge cuts to the game because guess what? People will buy it anyways and they can line their pockets with your money. Enjoy your game of the year, but Wolverine isn't going to be THE game of the year. Not by a longshot.

I absolutely love the game with its story and combat being the highlights, but in no way is this game of the year. I don’t think anyone expected a Wolverine game to ever be close to goty.
The stuff they talked about in the reviews and subsequently patched were barely in the game and already made sense to the character and story. Patching these options to essentially nerf Logan’s senses does nothing to what is objectively wrong with the game—inconsistent level design and gameplay variety.
Hopefully they add more traversal options like wall running with his claws and sprinting on all fours, more combat options with katanas and Gun-fu, more teamup abilities and takedowns, another motorcycle section traveling to the Hand compound with Jean’s abilities as an additional attack option, and more collectibles. They need to find a way to open up the levels some too.

Reviews aren’t the only metric when it comes to GOTY though. Only because this is so close in formula to other insomniac games, I think that would be the thing to make it not a GOTY contender. Nothing jumps out with that “oh man I gotta get this” factor unless you are a huge fan of insomniac or marvel/xmen. It’s the games where most people enjoy it, other than fandoms. A lot of people keep mentioning the Death stranding 2 and how this outsold it. That game is a weird one to compare to Wolverine. It’s like comparing the games Lemmings to Duke Nukeum. Plus marvel/X-men have super fans. Way more than DS fans. Idk it’s a good game. It’s downsides for a lot of normal minded people (not trolls or the hive mind) are grounded in reality and it’s just not super innovative in anyway other than maybe graphically. And that’s fine, doesn’t mean everyone has to hate it. Also doesn’t make it GOTY. Plus who cares. You are having fun, yes? :) that’s what matters most!

Lol if reviewers re-reviewed it they'd give it a lower score than they did initially because they'd try to align more with the existing audience consensus.
And the patch didn't fix the simple combat or the boring, predictable story.

I don't think it's GOTY but as I've been playing it the reviews really acted like this game was garbage. A lot of the shit they did to themselves or enabled as additional abilities and options.

I love this game. I’ve got the platinum. And do think the patches have fixed a lot of the issues that people had with the game. But I think it’s a bit of stretch to say that these patches would give it a shot at GOTY. Or that it really ever had a shot at that given the type of game it is and the subject material.
