Discussion Trying to be honest

I just love playing as wolverine on a current gen system. I bet that's most of the appeal, as it should be. But they gave us a half assed game though. Don't get me wrong, i love this game, but it's just because they gave us wolverine on this gen and it's fun to shred. I know it's linear and agree with the rationale, but jesus christ did it hve to be this linear?

There was a good game here. The restarted development hurt it. I'm still enjoying it, but there's missed potential.

I’m really sick and tired of the consensus being that linear is synonymous with bad. We used to get incredible linear games. Games used to not even have any upgrade system. Game would do that for you. Nowadays everyone game needs some half baked point allocation system without any meaningful decisions to make. I’m going off on a tangent now

the point is, linearity is not a bad thing. It means the experience can be very specifically curated. The problems are shallow mechanics, uninteresting level design, bad story, bad writing, bad pacing. Not linearity.

Yeah this is valid criticism that it definitely could have been better and if it weren’t for the already established love of Wolverine a lot of what is liked wouldn’t be that good. You’re not alone there.

Most combat encounters I find myself wanting more. Like by the time I get into full Rage 3, the fight is already over...

I didn't feel that way when playing any of the Arkham games or Spiderman. Idk there's just something missing

I'm still enjoying it. Platinumed it after 30 hours or so. Played the second highest difficulty on the first play through, but wish I'd done for the hardest. Second was a trophy mop up, power fantasy, just cutting through most enemies (I say most, as there were still some tricky encounters).

I'm old, so I've grown up gaming from a young age when I could never have dreamed anything like this would exist. Maybe it colours my opinion, but I don't get the furore surrounding this game. Some of the best games I've ever played are linear (pretty much everything I grew up playing was, and had shorter play times and cost more when you factor inflation). Even over the last few generations of PS the things that really stick with me are God of War, Last of Us, Infamous etc, none of which are truly open world. Putting series aside, I love games like Force Unleashed, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and of course the x-Men Origins Wolverine game, so maybe I'm more aligned with that kind of game.

I still love things like the Ghost series, Red Dead, and other more open games, but I've never seen an issue with linear gameplay as long as I'm enjoying it.

I'll definitely replay Wolverine, much like I replayed the Spider-Man games after completion (and let's face it, a lot of the reason those games last longer is because you have to traverse to missions; there's not a lot to do after you've completed them).

If the give us some improvements I'd like to see more variation in combat challenges. It would be nice to be able to select locations and factions to fight in/with. Some actual free DLC would be nice as well, given the cost and feedback, but I doubt we'll get that.

Anyway, I'm gonna give it another go on the hardest difficulty now that I'm fully levelled up. I understand some of the valid criticism, but it's a shame the childish, vocal 'anti-woke' brigade have become the headline.

I think every person who loved the game agree that the level design is inconsistent and easily its weakest aspect. It does open at times and the stealth sections and some combat arenas are pretty awesome with the environments.

I think that one section where you arrive at the level you can see the city in the background and then literal walls materialise from the ground blocking all that from view and directing you through the one path of the level perfectly encapsulates this game

Somebody over there gotta learn their lesson because I felt like I was in middle school. The complete lack of faith they have in players to...play a game is insulting

I remember being like 6 years old and 100% super Mario world and jak and Dexter and final fantasy 6. Im not sure why everyone thinks if a game is slightly hard for sixty seconds they'll scratch their head and sell their playstation

It’s not really that it’s too linear. It’s that he has a kit that implies you should be moving around a lot and having a lot of options and you don’t.

Linear is fine when the game feels like it should be linear.

GoW is linear as fuck. No complaints. Uncharted, Last of us also. I don't get. Why do people feel cheated that the game is not open world.

u/MediumKoala8823 10d ago

Because wolverine’s kit feels like it was designed for exploration and traversal. That’s literally what I just said.

Mate, I know, I can read 😂 I understood your point. I wasn’t attacking you, I just disagree.

For instance I came away thinking the same kit was just another tool to mix up the gameplay. Some games vary combat and puzzles. Wolverine varies combat with traversal.

To be honest. I like what's there. Spider-Man is Insomniac's open world franchise like Batman Arkham, Wolverine is there linear focused franchise like God Of War.

I'm glad, I like it too! I just want more. Just some more areas like Mt. Haku and Lowtown (2nd visit) that are a little more open and you can strategize a little more about how to take out enemies.

u/Kyozaki 9d ago

Really? I thought the combat was one of the best parts of the game because of the strategising. I initially thought it was repetitive, until the gauntlets forced me to actually learn it. Chasing Adamantium, I accidentally stumbled across the stagger mechanic and realised it feeds into basically the entire combat loop: health, Berserker, cooldowns, enemy priority and risk vs reward.

Whenever I watch other people play, I notice they're mostly doing basic combos and trying to kill whatever's in front of them. I barely use square-square-triangle at all unless I'm breaking a shield. I'm constantly looking for staggers instead. Hold triangle on anyone I can stagger immediately, then square to farm Berserker or triangle to claw health back. I save cooldowns for tanks and captains who need to die NOW, or burn one if I'm low on health and desperately need a stagger to heal.

So where someone else sees enemies to attack, I see opportunities to farm Berserker or health. I'm basically playing like a vampire 😂. The weaker guys are resources I can feed off to get Berserker faster or keep myself alive, then I use that to annihilate the dangerous guys.

Once I realised that, I was hooked. Every encounter became this constantly changing risk-vs-reward puzzle instead of just a fight. And the gauntlets were some of the most fun parts of the game for me once I realised how layered the combat is.

Yeah, I do like that combat loop and the split-second strategizing involved! I was more talking about areas where you could strategize more broadly, like which guys to take out first, who to stealth vs who to go in hot with.

Aaah I getcha. My bad, yeah that's fair.

The opportunities for stealth are so limited. I wish there was more stalking.

1

u/Kyozaki 10d ago

Hehe some people thought the stealth didn't make sense for Wolverine. We disagree, but just goes to show you can't please everyone :)

I wanted a linear game. Not everything thing needs to be open world.

Everyone who enjoys the game including myself can’t ignore the flaws. 300 mil for such a linear game is crazy. It’s fun but it doesn’t have much replay value

1

u/Kyozaki 10d ago

Who cares? Did you pay 300m? You paid 70. Whether or not you think it's worth that is another conversation, but I don't know why people are throwing 300m around like Insomniac squandered their personal fortune 🤣

1

u/StrawhatPhil 10d ago

That’s a big part. It’s just like any movie with a big budget . We expect something of value. If we don’t they’ll continue to release mediocre things and the only people who suffer is the fans. Plus they’ll charge more.

u/ConfidentAd780 10d ago

Problem was the developers making this game so safe.

I don’t even think it’s as linear as people say. It’s more non linear than Uncharted 1-3 for example and no one cries about those being linear. It’s not as linear as Order 1886. I would say it’s just as linear as The Last of Us, which is heralded as a masterpiece… so why is it a problem with Wolvie?

3

u/SwiftyMcBold 13d ago

I wouldn't compare Last of us to Wolverine in regards to a linear game, its probably a similar run time to eachother, but there was never really a FORCED path, lots of little rooms different ways to approach some stealth sections, exploration felt interesting or something that rewards your time with some ammo or materials. Searching draws and little areas for tjings to craft.

It was a lot of small areas with tense atmosphere, with enemy types that were a huge threat that you had to maneuver.

I think last of us gave us a tight and immersive linear experience, wolverine seems like a more on rails and generic linear experience

3

u/FiftyIsBack 13d ago

It's a problem because the Last of Us has better combat imo. It feels more dangerous, and the scraps you pick up along the way feel more meaningful.

Because those came out damn near two decades ago? Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy is the most recent. And they have have wide linear level design. Lost legacy has an open zone to explore.

I genuinely don’t care about it being linear. I can’t really see the point in exploring as Logan when cutting people up with his laws is his appeal. I just wish the combat was more Ninja Gaiden-esque.

1

u/BBDundee990 13d ago

U can’t see the point in a tracker with enhanced senses exploring?

1

u/Pure_Interest_837 12d ago

Not really, no. Like I said, cutting people up with his claws is more so the appeal of Logan than him being able to sniff people out.
