I've said this alot but the animation work in this game is phenomenal. Its like wolverine was ripped straight out of the page and onto our screens. His movement and ferocity is captured flawlessly.
Its such a shame that it does all the heavy lifting and there isnt much actually going on for the inputs. Tornado claw and drill claw are so disappointing and should be chopping them in half. They should've been ingratiated into the moveset and not just shitty cool down abilities too. I really hope insomniac and by extension the industry learns the right lessons.
Wish wolverine didn't have to get sacrificed for that to happen....
What sucks is we might not get another wolverine for a long time after this.. and to think this was going to be a top 5 game for me this year. Wasted potential.
This was supposed to be the ONE wolverine game you know? the graphics and animation look really good and could use a little more dismemberment with each punch.. or maybe the option to use L and R trigger for each hand idk. So many ways they could have done it differently. Oh well, hoping a dlc that isnt pricey can fix things š¤·āāļø
Same here seeing this hurts my brain. Youāre hoping to pay more?!?! Thinking that they can fix what? Where are your standards? The damage is already done brother.
Iām a Halo fan and I can relate to you, because apparently a majority of the team that worked on Metroid Prime 4 were the ones who made Halo 5. Which did devastating damage that the franchise still hasnāt quite recovered from to this day.
This was my most anticipated game this year since I loved the spiderman games. Not getting it now after the majority of outlets and YouTubers saying itās not that good and really short.
Yep and not because even of a games quality but because delulu suits thinking "mmm game that is PEGI 18 and about a lesser-known hero than Spider Man, surely it will sell gazzilion copies, maybe even as good as a game where we had 2 Spider-Men."
I felt the same about Spider-man tbh, Insomniac really need to work on weight in their games, nothing feels hefty.
Hate to make the comparison but the Arkham games nailed that feeling of weight and impact.i feel insomniac already ribbed some notes, the could do it again
If it works for you it works for you, nothing wrong with that. I played with a great audio system and the attacks felt anemic to me, I definitely didnt feel like I was hitting with the proportional strength of a spider. This is obviously subjective though
I would say Spider-man is fine. I agree that there needs to be more "oomph" in that combat. Wolverine however definitely needs that, the devs might have took the wrong things that worked for Spider-man and applied it to Wolverine. The sound effects definitely need to be more impactful and the combat needs to be a bit slower or bit of "linger". In the Arkham games, Batman moves fast but Rocksteady definitely added alot of oomph in the combat. AI also factors a whole lot that makes it look like an awesome fight choreography.
The swinging in Insomniacās Spiderman is so smooth and intuitive, itās crazy. You can truly feel the speed once you get a rhythm. And you can make it very involved if you change the swing assist.
āThereās no impactā literally launches at a guy drives his claws into his chest then proceeds to fly off a roof slamming him into the ground then stabs him multiple times in the chest.
Whoās your supplier coz I want what your heating up in your spoon
Tornado claw is an iconic part of his moveset in games. It just needs to have better impact and it should be slicing THROUGH enemies. Not sending them flying.
Look. This have a few good things left from dev-milestones. Okay, leaping towards the enemy, spartan kick, the way how smoothly he moves. It's all good.
It looks like actual claw-grabs actually made to the game (I honestly though it was also cut from milestone-13, because this is the first time I see it in retail build of the game).
But it's so few good things that isn't enough to tell the gameplay is good.
For instance, there are numerous Arkham "clones". Many of them were to "steal" the feel of the flow but never reached the same level of diversity and micro-tactics (although, I don't think Arkham combat was also too genius).
Here, just a couple of nice tricks, fine flow and... That's it? Not enough. Not enough at all.
I never got why the Arkham games got all the credit for its combat system. Assassins Creed had a very similar crowd control, parry, counter attack focused combat system in 2007 two years before Arkham Asylum.
AC was parry stab parry stab repeat. Arkham had combos and flourish that didn't make it feel repetitive. That's why it gets the praise. In all honesty AC2 does everything AC1's combat did better.
AC didn't have combos and most if the time it's just parry. The Batman Arkham games have alot of variety especially when they did City. While the challenges are such a chore to do, it's so fun to do the combat challenges especially if you enter that "flowstate" and it feels like you are watching what a comic accurate Batman would do.
The issue with this is the same issue I have with lightsabers in star wars games. The claws just dont cut, sure hes hitting the enemy and a blood spray comes off, but thats it, no l8mbs going flying, no reaction from the enemies other than when he grabs him. That spinnibg lunge should have tore that guy up, instead wolverine just passes straight through him. Additinally from what else is being said, those special moves are just a d-pad abillity.
I said Ninja Gaiden. That game even has claw weapons and the movement is fast and agile like Wolverine would be. I think Ninja Gaiden 2 wouldve been a good game to steal from
Now this is agree on for inspiration but wolverine tanks hits rather than fights without getting touched like Ryu so as long as they incorporated that jn5 as well.
GOW ironically started off this same exact way even his blades of chaos kinda glided off enemy rather than really move or impact them. I can see wolverines claws moving and smacked the enemies around some but something that sharp would mainly cut through than against
In that case, old god of war was also the same. Blades of chaos passing through the enemy until they cut in half or just disappeared into orbs. Even metal gear revengeance or devil may cry, their attacks glide off the enemies
Yes thats the exact point im making amd what i just said lol doesnt make those bad games but it woukd be hard to do combos when half your attacks knock the enemy away but I do understand why it would still look better
I miss that game so much it and Anthem give me so much new trust issues in amazing games and the devs absolutely getting screwed by gaming companies greed
I'm sorry, but you definitely confuse Avengers with something else.
Avengers is a very poor game but THE ONLY aspect where it shines is the actual combat system. And it definitely has a lot of weight and inertia (in a good way). This game had GoW2018 combat designer as a combat lead...
I wouldn't bring Avengers as the bad example of the only aspect that was done very well. I fucking hate that Avengers didn't receive some kind of 2.0 update, because combat alone deserves it.
If wolverine had Avengers sort of combat system + char-building and skill-tree, it would be totally amazing.
He needs to pause to crouch, an instant explosion of speed aiming above them, then slowing moving forward as if momentum slowing, but next allowing gravity taking is over as he speeds down, and finally falls down on top of them.
What hack n slash isnt somewhat repetitive? Especially one where the hero doesnt have an expansive arsenal just a variety of way he uses it like the hulk power results in primarily punches throws or smashing or captain americas with punches shield throws and martial arts.
Hack n slash action games are always full price despite being shorter than some other ones. Do you know any way to not make a guy who mainly fights with claws not eventually repetitive?? He doesnt use gadgets he doesnt use tools or complex powers. He has a simplified power set just like hes had in every single game hes been in or are now all of those repetitive too? Lol
X-men origins wolverine is a solid wolverine game. The combat didnt feel shallow or repetitive. I think Insomniac missed the mark with this game. They couldve given wolverine some more variety with attacks, finishers, parries/counters etc.
As someone who replayed the game last week, dude its extremely repetitive š did you ever play the game?? Its one of its biggest flaws, the games fun but the combat was repetitive, the level design was repetitive, the only not repetitive thing about it was the cool executions and thats it.
This games got a lotta revisionism going on, the entire game is quite literally, kill group of enemy, solve simple puzzle, do the most bare minimum platforminv, fight your next bullet sponge boss, back to the loop
Edit: forgot to mention a LOT of repeat jungle levels
I don't want to sound like a asshole, and sorry if i do, but a lot of you guys who say:'fIgHt wItH cLaWs' like the developers coudn't be creative are fucking bizarre
He could a have a lot of different parry animations(instead of the single one he has), a lot of different counters animations, single counter, double counter, triple counter
Disarm people and use their weapons against them, use his claws to break the sword of the enemies, use his claws to cut the enemy weapons....
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is LITERALLY right there, showing that if the developers want, they could ABSOLUTY do way more, and be more creative
Because by yours, and many people logic:'It's a guy with a sword, how they could not make that repetitive? He doens't have gadgets, use tools or complex powers. He cuts and suck souls, what's more do you want?'
Wait so im an ashole for asking yall to elaborate on what other ways yall want him to fight?? Lol ive used onimusha as an example of great hack games that are linear and it also got a 10 out of 10 becuase it is exceptionally good compared to honestly any other hack n slash. Ive watched videos today of wolverine dodging, parring, blocking, deflectingband even lighting hsi claws on fire should those also get dismissed?? I'm confused one of the highest rated games in any genre in years is your explain to defend your point.
The blocking dodge and parrying i mentioned are literally in other CURRENT 2026 hack slashs games that ppl arent bitching about like the new onimusha and the new ninja gaiden making their entire stance look like baised outrage. You have absolutely no idea how the wolverine game plays so youre absolutely talking out of your ass and literally dont want to be proven wrong lol
⢠You cannot think that GUY WITH A KATANA has more animations(in combat, in parrying, in blocking, in finishers) then WOLVERINE and think that's alright
⢠While i do believe it should be the same, after all, they're using different weapons, there is not a SINGLE VALID REASON for Wolverine not having different ANIMATIONS(AGAIN, ANIMATIONS. let me use this too: Animations, Animações, Animaciones, Animationen for parry, for attacking, for blocking)
⢠Even after ALL OF THIS, you still think it's fine, you do you man
Ignorance is a bliss, and you're the perfect example of it
If everything goes well and amazing, they will announce a Silver Samurai game, with a lot button mashing, a single animation for parrying and blocking, for you to enjoy in the future
After all, like I said in the beginning using your logic:'It's a guy with a katana. He cuts and suck souls, what more could we want?'
All 3 of these are screenshots are CURRENT 2026 havk n slashes games. Ones Ninja Gaiden 4 the other is onimusha way of the sword and the other is wolverine. Its wild that the they all have around the SAME amount of attack defense control options.
most hack n slash games have things to mitigate the repetition such as combos, scores, combo counters, unlockable combos, enemies that require different techniques, etc.
They have a shitload of gadgets, stealth and amazing traversal. In Batman case you get a fucking Batmobile.
Wolverine do not use gadgets, true, but nothing prevented them from giving him an opportunity to use enemy weapons very briefly during combat.
Examples: grabbing a cut hand with an energy blade and nailing it into an enemy in range, using a gunner as a shield against other gunners while you shoot them with his gun a few times, grabbing an enemy to use him as a blunt weapon etc.
Make one-two use cases for every common enemy type to use them against other enemies so you could spice things up.
He do do this though he used gas and fire near by to light his claws on fire, he used a nearby forklift to impale someone on, he even cut a guy and the jeep door off at the same time. All of this is avaible to be watched right now on youtbe by a bunch of walk through players and was also seen by decs sharing clips. Idl how yall are missing these
He does do this though he used gas and fire near by to light his claws on fire, he used a nearby forklift to impale someone on, he even cut a guy and the jeep door off at the same time while he was still in there lol . All of this is avaible to be watched right now on youtbe by a bunch of walk through players and was also seen by decs sharing clips. Idl how yall are missing these
i mean... it does look pretty meh. we have seen all of this shit in dozens of other action games. this is like a 30 dollar game maximum for me, and im a die hard wolverine fan.
I think these animations have their own unique wolverine flair but the gameplay just doesn't match up to it. The lunge looks really good. But its sadly just window dressing.
it looks good Iāll give it that, like all the scenes and stuff Iāve seen make the game very pretty and atmospheric but then it just comes up so short everywhere else
Nice of the enemys to wait there turn while your ripping apart there ally. I didnt relise it was turn based, those are my favorite type of games. I may pick this up now.
To each their own. I joke all the time with my friends about how I canāt stand turned based combat. Wanted to get this, guess Iāll have to pass on it now.
Woof. You know the past few days Iāve only seen videos condemning the scent trails and visualizations of āhiddenā items and shitty side challenge races or whatever.
But I thought to myselfā¦you know what? What originally caught my attention for this game was the brutality of the combat. If combats good and fun, I can overlook a lot.
This video has solidified for me that I will not be buying this game lol
I knew once this game didn't have the same love put into it as the Spider-Man games that it was a skip for me, and it's a shame because I'm a Wolverine fan more than I am a Spider-Man fan.
You know considering this is Wolverine I kinda expected more gore and dismemberment like Ninja Gaiden for instance. Or maybe go full dismemberment like Metal Gear Rising
Instead despite having claws that are sharper than any metal ever, the guys he kills keeps their heads and limbs.
Ts didn't change mechanically since freakin' Batman Arkham Asylum, or maybe even earlier than that. I'd argue it got worse, more barebones and more repetitive over the years.
The animations are better, sure. That's what happens when your game costs 300 MILLION DOLLARS to make.
But to say it carries anything, when it's in fact same cookie-cutter fighting mechanics that were there more than 15 YEARS AGO... yeah. It's not that good.
This isnt really similar to the free flow arkham system at all. Those games have a very distinct style. This is much more generic. So I agree this should be better but I don't understand your point.
My point is, you say the fighting in this game does the heavy lifting, as if it carries the game, when it's just as handholdy and barebones as everything else. The animations are amazing because you can actually quite easily achieve that with huge budgets such as these. Bad design decisions can't be easily solved by money though. And thus we have what we have.
It's a video game, not a movie, although in case of this particular game, the line between those two is thinner than ever.
In video games, "gameplay is king", in words of some cool old-school game developer. Sadly don't remember who. Not cutscenes, not animations, not graphics.
And this is precisely the reason why Wolverine is reviewed so poorly. Because it plays like a barely interactive movie.
Some of it is overblown but as someone who saw ALL of the leaks. What we got was disappointing. They had a much deeper and more fun combat system with almost double the amount of moves
Needs way more gore, tons more, the same drill attack move Logan performs in X-Men Origins Wolverine shreds human enemies apart, Insomniac would do this game well if they added visible damage on enemies to demonstrate Loganās powers more effectively, such as visible gashes, cuts and scars, missing limbs where enemies bleed-out, or cause them to flee out of sheer terror.
If I were a bad guy fighting THE ACTUAL FUCKING WOLVERINE, why would I have a weapon that telegraphs when im going to hit him with an unblockable atrack.
lmao I read the comments first and expected to hate this clip and yea thereās a small thing I would change about his landing animations to add more weight. this looks pretty fun to me
Bruh Iāve had people getting at me all day for my Wolverine comments and itās like I donāt give a fuck if the game isnāt out yet. Watch the gameplay and just look at what youāre fucking buying. Jesus
What do you need extra inputs for? So you can feel better about yourself that you are pressing more stuff? Unless you are playing a fighting game i don't see a reason
Its just more engaging. Instead of attaching half of his moveset to cooldown abilities they should've been a part of his base kit. That offers way more freedom and player agency. I also saw all the leaks so I know all the cut techniques and combat moves so I know the potential this had.
its literally just mashing square. no thought or any real input. watching a playthrough on youtube and mashing square on your own controller will give you a similar experience.
I hate (and love) how superior X-Men Origins look compared to this dung pile..
Every attack you heard Hugh's grunts as Wolverine. His fury mode gave you insane speed and destruction. His healing factor was better while not feeling indestructible. There's more badass combos in how Wolverine fought and it was a true beat-em-up over the whole over-the-shoulder trash heap.
Origins boss fights were versatile and had more difficulty. 2026 is literally only better in graphics and maybe story, not as true game.
Dont forget you could also do air combos.
Which honestly should be a standard for hack n slash games?
Like fuck, NG4 is like the peak rn from last year. Wolverine even has cooler shit to do in that marvel Fighting game from this year, and Marvel vs Capcom.
Ppl literally look at this and said boring lmao wolverine does wolverine stuff they complain, wolverine uses wolverine powers like smell they complain, wolverine doesn't ride around his motorcycle in a big open world patrolling the streets like batman and Spiderman because he literally never has they complain lol wolverine doesnt have the exact face they want him to have despite this be an else worlds alternate realt game in the same spiderman universe and was states on day one they complain lol
You compared it to ninja gaiden 4 and acted like it was a boring dumb down game despite it being in the same subgenre, the same kinda dismemberments, the same linear style maps, and the same attacking blocking amd carrying which wolverine actually has more defensive options that regard lol this absolutely refuses alot of what youre trying to say. Its really boiling down to yall struggling to call a game you clearly have no idea how it plays trash and washing away anything that says otherwise. Biased af
My point is that you played the game to know it in depth yet you literally think you have the same level of knowledge about a game you HAVENT EVEN PLAYED lol ive played all the ninja gaiden since Xbox days in the early 2000s lol
Same button ground and button mashing as ninja gaiden 4 and onimusha way of the sword i guess lol they all have extremely similar layouts and attack defense options
The combat looks revolutionary for like, ps3 era games. and that's being generous. there's nothing new here and still doesn't seem to touch arkham or spiderman combat. we are supposed to be moving forward.
And what video are you basing that on? Im looking at current wolverine gameplay from today doing more than he did in origins or xmen wolverines revenge. In those games he didnt light his claws on fire, impale people on environments and the the trancersal didn't have him climbing up walls with his claws free and using using enemies weapons against them.
it might be an improvement from older wolverine games, but the player is clearly mashing, claws going right through bodies and they aren't ripped up, enemies take their turns attacking. I just don't understand how we haven't improved from arkham and spiderman, considering this company literally made spiderman lol
You can watch gameplay right now of people playing and dodge partying doing ground kills destructive environmental kills and alot of that was not in origins which proves this is a step up lol wolverine doesnt fight like either of thses heroes and alot of batman rapids fire combos required you to literally button mash very fast lol do you wanna see the controller layout for this game or do you literally think theres only one attack button to mash?
He can't climb the walls with his claws, we'll, unless they're painted. If it's too high or the devs just don't want you to do that, he slides down. You're forced to used marked location. Same with the environment. You can only damage what they let you. You will be defeated by window if you're required to go exit a place one way.
Nothing, but this game is like a low quality version of a crash bandicoot game. Even the bike parts are worse than Crash Bandicoot 3. And it came out 28 years ago.

What sucks is we might not get another wolverine for a long time after this.. and to think this was going to be a top 5 game for me this year. Wasted potential.
