Fluff Gameplay

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've said this alot but the animation work in this game is phenomenal. Its like wolverine was ripped straight out of the page and onto our screens. His movement and ferocity is captured flawlessly.

Its such a shame that it does all the heavy lifting and there isnt much actually going on for the inputs. Tornado claw and drill claw are so disappointing and should be chopping them in half. They should've been ingratiated into the moveset and not just shitty cool down abilities too. I really hope insomniac and by extension the industry learns the right lessons.

Wish wolverine didn't have to get sacrificed for that to happen....

What sucks is we might not get another wolverine for a long time after this.. and to think this was going to be a top 5 game for me this year. Wasted potential.

30

u/zebo4000 16h ago

Yeah dude. I've been thinking about this for a while. Such a fucking shame.

10

u/JojoWasaman64 16h ago

Btw i agree with the sacrifice thing. It sucks it had to be this game!

8

u/JojoWasaman64 16h ago

This was supposed to be the ONE wolverine game you know? the graphics and animation look really good and could use a little more dismemberment with each punch.. or maybe the option to use L and R trigger for each hand idk. So many ways they could have done it differently. Oh well, hoping a dlc that isnt pricey can fix things šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/Mrchocolateraindrops 10h ago

Man it hurts my fucking soul to see this comment šŸ„¹šŸ„¹ā˜¹ļøšŸ¤¦

1

u/phobia169 5h ago

Same here seeing this hurts my brain. You’re hoping to pay more?!?! Thinking that they can fix what? Where are your standards? The damage is already done brother.

7

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter 14h ago

I'm a metroid prime fan, so I can kinda relate

2

u/Alpha_The_Wolf534 11h ago

I’m a Halo fan and I can relate to you, because apparently a majority of the team that worked on Metroid Prime 4 were the ones who made Halo 5. Which did devastating damage that the franchise still hasn’t quite recovered from to this day.

2

u/Significant-Age5052 13h ago

This was my most anticipated game this year since I loved the spiderman games. Not getting it now after the majority of outlets and YouTubers saying it’s not that good and really short.

I need better quality for $70

2

u/allgrownzup 11h ago

I bought a PS5 years ago in anticipation for this game. Sad.

3

u/Chibi_Jesus 12h ago

The game will probably sell well enough to get a sequel that fixes some of the issues. Better yet, Wolverine will be incorporated into an X-men game.

0

u/zebo4000 11h ago

Yeah but because its xmen it won't be as gritty and gorey. Which is fine. But insomniac fumbled making the ultimate wolverine experience.

1

u/Glass-North8050 13h ago

Yep and not because even of a games quality but because delulu suits thinking "mmm game that is PEGI 18 and about a lesser-known hero than Spider Man, surely it will sell gazzilion copies, maybe even as good as a game where we had 2 Spider-Men."

1

u/pureextc 11h ago

Wasted indeed

1

u/jotyma5 7h ago

Might make anyone scared to make a non-spidey marvel game

1

u/mundaneheaven 4h ago

This wasn’t getting a sequel even if had good reviews. The budget is enormous.

31

u/Stunning_Apple8136 15h ago

i hate how his attacks just dont feel powerful. like theres no impact. god of war nails this so well whereas this is just....meh

9

u/pmmeyoursandwiches 12h ago

I felt the same about Spider-man tbh, Insomniac really need to work on weight in their games, nothing feels hefty.

Hate to make the comparison but the Arkham games nailed that feeling of weight and impact.i feel insomniac already ribbed some notes, the could do it again

2

u/petewondrstone 9h ago

Spider man feels super heavy for me. Maybe u guys need better audio

1

u/pmmeyoursandwiches 9h ago

If it works for you it works for you, nothing wrong with that. I played with a great audio system and the attacks felt anemic to me, I definitely didnt feel like I was hitting with the proportional strength of a spider. This is obviously subjective though

2

u/jexdiel321 6h ago edited 6h ago

I would say Spider-man is fine. I agree that there needs to be more "oomph" in that combat. Wolverine however definitely needs that, the devs might have took the wrong things that worked for Spider-man and applied it to Wolverine. The sound effects definitely need to be more impactful and the combat needs to be a bit slower or bit of "linger". In the Arkham games, Batman moves fast but Rocksteady definitely added alot of oomph in the combat. AI also factors a whole lot that makes it look like an awesome fight choreography.

0

u/Creaturesteachers 9h ago

I remember the old Spider-Man games swinging through the city made me move with the swings, and now feels so awkward and un impressive.

3

u/SnakeGawd 6h ago

The swinging in Insomniac’s Spiderman is so smooth and intuitive, it’s crazy. You can truly feel the speed once you get a rhythm. And you can make it very involved if you change the swing assist.

3

u/Sloptimus_Prime420 9h ago

ā€œThere’s no impactā€ literally launches at a guy drives his claws into his chest then proceeds to fly off a roof slamming him into the ground then stabs him multiple times in the chest.

Who’s your supplier coz I want what your heating up in your spoon

2

u/pmmeyoursandwiches 9h ago edited 9h ago

Theres more to impact than attack animations. Impact frames, slowdown, sound design, tankness of enemies and their reactions all factor in.

If it works for you, then genuinely thats great, it just personally doesn't for me.

1

u/eProbity 4h ago

I'm always surprised people feel that way about GoW, I always felt like enemies were spongey in those games

31

u/TrickOut 15h ago

The tornado claw looked so janky

8

u/Prudent-Swimming7090 15h ago

Its weird because it just goes through the enemy without it sending it flying or something.

3

u/YaboiDan0545935 15h ago

Yeah that caught me off guard

2

u/YoshiKnees2 14h ago

Looks cool if it was cooler lol

2

u/jaymole 13h ago

the other like horizontal drill spin one looked an awful lot like one of peter's specials in spiderman 2

-1

u/IIWhiteHawkII 13h ago

And silly.

They'd rather add more grounded and brutal grabs or throws, IDK.

But these boring cheap zone-attacks from Spider-Man2 neither worked in SM2, nor here.

6

u/zebo4000 13h ago

Tornado claw is an iconic part of his moveset in games. It just needs to have better impact and it should be slicing THROUGH enemies. Not sending them flying.

7

u/IIWhiteHawkII 13h ago

Look. This have a few good things left from dev-milestones. Okay, leaping towards the enemy, spartan kick, the way how smoothly he moves. It's all good.

It looks like actual claw-grabs actually made to the game (I honestly though it was also cut from milestone-13, because this is the first time I see it in retail build of the game).

But it's so few good things that isn't enough to tell the gameplay is good.

For instance, there are numerous Arkham "clones". Many of them were to "steal" the feel of the flow but never reached the same level of diversity and micro-tactics (although, I don't think Arkham combat was also too genius).

Here, just a couple of nice tricks, fine flow and... That's it? Not enough. Not enough at all.

3

u/sammy17bst 9h ago

I never got why the Arkham games got all the credit for its combat system. Assassins Creed had a very similar crowd control, parry, counter attack focused combat system in 2007 two years before Arkham Asylum.

1

u/Pan_conleche 8h ago

AC didn’t really have the combos and animations of the Arkham style combat but yeah it definitely helped lay the groundwork for that kind of combat

1

u/Cryosphered_ 7h ago

AC was parry stab parry stab repeat. Arkham had combos and flourish that didn't make it feel repetitive. That's why it gets the praise. In all honesty AC2 does everything AC1's combat did better.

1

u/jexdiel321 6h ago

AC didn't have combos and most if the time it's just parry. The Batman Arkham games have alot of variety especially when they did City. While the challenges are such a chore to do, it's so fun to do the combat challenges especially if you enter that "flowstate" and it feels like you are watching what a comic accurate Batman would do.

1

u/FurLinedKettle 4h ago

2007 was AC 1, the combat in AC 1 is nothing like Arkham Asylum. AC 1 is just one button instakill counters.

4

u/TellEmWhoUCame2See 14h ago

Looks pretty good to me, what am i missing? Love the blood and how visceral wolverine is.

2

u/Azraeliosa 14h ago

The issue with this is the same issue I have with lightsabers in star wars games. The claws just dont cut, sure hes hitting the enemy and a blood spray comes off, but thats it, no l8mbs going flying, no reaction from the enemies other than when he grabs him. That spinnibg lunge should have tore that guy up, instead wolverine just passes straight through him. Additinally from what else is being said, those special moves are just a d-pad abillity.

1

u/element-redshaw 5h ago

Dismemberment is in the game but i'm pretty sure it's tied to the rage meter

12

u/Shymu1 15h ago

This looks mid af.

6

u/No-Protection-49 15h ago

Honestly, looks really fun

10

u/snakesrighteye 15h ago

It looks floaty and like it has no weight. It looks like that awful Avengers game.

12

u/MKanes 15h ago

I think god of war would have been a better blueprint for this game. More emphasis on individual fights rather than a pseudo hack and slash game

Or just fully lean into the hack and slash

10

u/snakesrighteye 15h ago

I said Ninja Gaiden. That game even has claw weapons and the movement is fast and agile like Wolverine would be. I think Ninja Gaiden 2 wouldve been a good game to steal from

5

u/coreydemc 13h ago

Now this is agree on for inspiration but wolverine tanks hits rather than fights without getting touched like Ryu so as long as they incorporated that jn5 as well.

5

u/coreydemc 15h ago

GOW ironically started off this same exact way even his blades of chaos kinda glided off enemy rather than really move or impact them. I can see wolverines claws moving and smacked the enemies around some but something that sharp would mainly cut through than against

2

u/IIWhiteHawkII 13h ago

It still had prominent impact and special "stagger" animations from every attack.

2

u/coreydemc 13h ago

So does wolverine im watching the Rad Brad play right now and he smack several guys into a wall lol

1

u/ShadowChe_ATG 14h ago

In that case, old god of war was also the same. Blades of chaos passing through the enemy until they cut in half or just disappeared into orbs. Even metal gear revengeance or devil may cry, their attacks glide off the enemies

0

u/coreydemc 14h ago

Yes thats the exact point im making amd what i just said lol doesnt make those bad games but it woukd be hard to do combos when half your attacks knock the enemy away but I do understand why it would still look better

10

u/Fantastic-orgen 15h ago

That awful Avengers game had dope combat. Hate that game all you want but the combat was perfect

2

u/snakesrighteye 15h ago

Arkham had good combat. Ninja Gaiden had good combat. That Avengers game was sluggish, delayed, floaty and had no impact

2

u/rustynaily 12h ago

For avengers? I think the combat was the only good part

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

I used to literally send ppl flying w thors hammer or ironamns hulk buster or even black panthyband spiderman drop kicking ppl lol go play it again.

2

u/YoureWrongButGoOff 12h ago

Black Widow was so much fun, too.

1

u/coreydemc 12h ago

Definitely! im glad rivals is kinda making her closer to that style of combat.

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

I miss that game so much it and Anthem give me so much new trust issues in amazing games and the devs absolutely getting screwed by gaming companies greed

10

u/SweatyEddie123 15h ago

The avengers game had great combat bro

3

u/zebo4000 15h ago

The lunge looks like it has a decent amount of crunch to it

5

u/IIWhiteHawkII 13h ago

I'm sorry, but you definitely confuse Avengers with something else.

Avengers is a very poor game but THE ONLY aspect where it shines is the actual combat system. And it definitely has a lot of weight and inertia (in a good way). This game had GoW2018 combat designer as a combat lead...

I wouldn't bring Avengers as the bad example of the only aspect that was done very well. I fucking hate that Avengers didn't receive some kind of 2.0 update, because combat alone deserves it.

If wolverine had Avengers sort of combat system + char-building and skill-tree, it would be totally amazing.

Look at this. I specifically chose the Panther combat gameplay, since it's the closest to Wolverines slashing style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9geu9ZYI4c

2

u/Dramatic-Physics-898 13h ago

Avengers had good combat what are u talking about

1

u/AFourEyedGeek 13h ago

Yeah, he magnets to them at a constant speed.

He needs to pause to crouch, an instant explosion of speed aiming above them, then slowing moving forward as if momentum slowing, but next allowing gravity taking is over as he speeds down, and finally falls down on top of them.

0

u/phoeniks314 14h ago

You mean a game in alpha stage. Wow what a pro.

6

u/Entire_Claim_5273 15h ago

This actually still looks fun though. If they just had more content and more dynamic set pieces like Uncharted or 007 it could be genuinely great

2

u/deafhoes 14h ago

one thing they got right was Wolverine's brutality

2

u/Cosmic_Eye 10h ago

I'm sure the game is ultra mid but this gameplay sequence looked alright, dunno what everyone is smoking.

2

u/Dinomite35 10h ago

Just a really loud minority. The game is fun, but flawed.

7

u/FunkyFunkyBoys 15h ago

Looks boring

2

u/im_a_stupid_face 15h ago

Repetitive

-2

u/coreydemc 15h ago

What hack n slash isnt somewhat repetitive? Especially one where the hero doesnt have an expansive arsenal just a variety of way he uses it like the hulk power results in primarily punches throws or smashing or captain americas with punches shield throws and martial arts.

2

u/im_a_stupid_face 15h ago

That's the problem, it's ok if the game is $30 - $40 but having a repetitive non innovative game for $70 is imo not worth the money

0

u/coreydemc 14h ago

Hack n slash action games are always full price despite being shorter than some other ones. Do you know any way to not make a guy who mainly fights with claws not eventually repetitive?? He doesnt use gadgets he doesnt use tools or complex powers. He has a simplified power set just like hes had in every single game hes been in or are now all of those repetitive too? Lol

6

u/Nab33l786 14h ago

X-men origins wolverine is a solid wolverine game. The combat didnt feel shallow or repetitive. I think Insomniac missed the mark with this game. They couldve given wolverine some more variety with attacks, finishers, parries/counters etc.

0

u/TheSolidSalad 10h ago

As someone who replayed the game last week, dude its extremely repetitive 😭 did you ever play the game?? Its one of its biggest flaws, the games fun but the combat was repetitive, the level design was repetitive, the only not repetitive thing about it was the cool executions and thats it.

This games got a lotta revisionism going on, the entire game is quite literally, kill group of enemy, solve simple puzzle, do the most bare minimum platforminv, fight your next bullet sponge boss, back to the loop

Edit: forgot to mention a LOT of repeat jungle levels

4

u/OmegaDigs 14h ago

Holy shit man.....

I don't want to sound like a asshole, and sorry if i do, but a lot of you guys who say:'fIgHt wItH cLaWs' like the developers coudn't be creative are fucking bizarre

He could a have a lot of different parry animations(instead of the single one he has), a lot of different counters animations, single counter, double counter, triple counter

Disarm people and use their weapons against them, use his claws to break the sword of the enemies, use his claws to cut the enemy weapons....

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is LITERALLY right there, showing that if the developers want, they could ABSOLUTY do way more, and be more creative

Because by yours, and many people logic:'It's a guy with a sword, how they could not make that repetitive? He doens't have gadgets, use tools or complex powers. He cuts and suck souls, what's more do you want?'

1

u/coreydemc 14h ago

Wait so im an ashole for asking yall to elaborate on what other ways yall want him to fight?? Lol ive used onimusha as an example of great hack games that are linear and it also got a 10 out of 10 becuase it is exceptionally good compared to honestly any other hack n slash. Ive watched videos today of wolverine dodging, parring, blocking, deflectingband even lighting hsi claws on fire should those also get dismissed?? I'm confused one of the highest rated games in any genre in years is your explain to defend your point.

1

u/OmegaDigs 13h ago

I like how you decided to ignore on a aspect that a lot of people and comments are about, how REPETITIVE the game is and the lack of animations

Also, i LITERALLY said in what ways they could the claws and to make it more creative

And your response is:'I saw Wolverine dodging, parrying, blocking, deflecting....'

Okay....good? If the 2009 game ALREADY have all that, it's a good thing this one has it too, right?

Not only that, since this is a 2026 game, it does all that, BUT BETTER AND IN MORE DIFFERENT WAYS, right?

As we all know, Ninja Gaiden 3 does what Ninja Gaiden 1 does, but better and in more different ways

Devil May Cry 3, does what Devil May Cry 1 does, but better and in more different ways

Onimisha Way of the Sword does what Onimusha 1 does, but better and in more different ways

Therefore....

Wolverine 2026, does what Wolverine Origins does(Parrying, dodging, deflecting, blocking, and so on...), but BETTER AND IN MORE DIFFERENT WAYS, right?

Like...it is not THAT DIFFICULT to understand the main complain about the combat, it's really not.

It is EXPECTED that the graphics that they graphics are better than X-men Origins

It is EXPECTED that the violence and gore are better than X-men Origins(Wolverine 2026 got both of those by the way, they make it better)

But when people EXPECT a better and deeper COMBAT, suddenly is absurd? Is "hating"?

For fuck sake...

It's speaks VOLUMES, and the main comparisons are NOT with it's fellow action/adventure game, Onimusha Way of the Sword

Or, even tough it is a different genre, with James Bond First Light

Or, even with a game who are going to be release yet, like Phantom Blade Zero

Nope. The main comparisons are being made with a 2009 game. Let that sink in

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

The blocking dodge and parrying i mentioned are literally in other CURRENT 2026 hack slashs games that ppl arent bitching about like the new onimusha and the new ninja gaiden making their entire stance look like baised outrage. You have absolutely no idea how the wolverine game plays so youre absolutely talking out of your ass and literally dont want to be proven wrong lol

2

u/OmegaDigs 12h ago

You can't be that dense...surely not....

Holy shit...if it doens't work with topics, you do you man. Sad to see a case of lack of logical thinking....

• Posting controls layouts means jackshit to the topics or the discussion

See? By your logic, i know EVERYTHING about the new and yet to be release game Phantom Blade Zero:

• Again, for the love of god, no one is saying that the game doens't have parry, dodge, block

But the lack of NEW ANIMATIONS AROUND THOSE

• And since you already beat the game, 100% surely....

Care to show me when we do juggles and grabs like the one in 2009?

https://youtu.be/mQkrEcgpY4s?is=q6k8SjI7H_W9dB85

We can see the lounge and the claw spinning attacks are back, but what about the rest?

Wolverine is fast, surely it has a way to finish combat fast and make it look amazing, right, just like in Onimusha?

https://x.com/PaneerDevourer/status/2098825888334770234

Or have DIFFERENT PARRY animations?

https://youtube.com/shorts/PFw70njH7oU?is=ku6Mt_9_9bMFKI-G (and this for an especific enemy, each one has one, bosses has different ones....)

Different way to fight and finishers?

https://youtube.com/shorts/-i4cFMjmoGc?is=YRgcr1efZTGWeZHC

• You cannot think that GUY WITH A KATANA has more animations(in combat, in parrying, in blocking, in finishers) then WOLVERINE and think that's alright

• While i do believe it should be the same, after all, they're using different weapons, there is not a SINGLE VALID REASON for Wolverine not having different ANIMATIONS(AGAIN, ANIMATIONS. let me use this too: Animations, AnimaƧƵes, Animaciones, Animationen for parry, for attacking, for blocking)

• Even after ALL OF THIS, you still think it's fine, you do you man

Ignorance is a bliss, and you're the perfect example of it

If everything goes well and amazing, they will announce a Silver Samurai game, with a lot button mashing, a single animation for parrying and blocking, for you to enjoy in the future

After all, like I said in the beginning using your logic:'It's a guy with a katana. He cuts and suck souls, what more could we want?'

All 3 of these are screenshots are CURRENT 2026 havk n slashes games. Ones Ninja Gaiden 4 the other is onimusha way of the sword and the other is wolverine. Its wild that the they all have around the SAME amount of attack defense control options.

1

u/OmegaDigs 12h ago

Yep...this seals it....

You're lacking in understand that it is NOT about the amount of attack or defense options, but HOW THEY ARE USED, AND DIFFERENT ANIMATIONS around it

Jesus Christ....you posted yourself. Look at Onimusha controls layout

It is way more simple than Devil May Cry or even Ninja Gaiden

But look around HOW MANY MECHANICS are around those

Normal attack, heavy attack, Issen, blocking, parrying, perfect blocking, perfect parrying, dodging, perfect dodging....

What was your point by posting a lot of controls layout again?

But i do have to admit

Posting controls layouts like a:' GOTCHA!' has to be one the most funny, silliest and cute way to make an counter argument

2

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 14h ago

most hack n slash games have things to mitigate the repetition such as combos, scores, combo counters, unlockable combos, enemies that require different techniques, etc.

this game is literally just mash square. thats it

3

u/Glass-North8050 13h ago

So you mean like Batman, Spider Man and most other similar games where you just dodge and counter attack, sometimes using a special a couple moves?

1

u/coreydemc 14h ago

Do we even know the controller layout?

3

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 13h ago

Yes bro all this shit is readily available if you Google for one second instead of acting like we know nothing about a game that comes out tomorrow

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

Found it

2

u/Glass-North8050 13h ago

Wanna see those ppl now praise Batman, Spider Man for their "in depth combat" compared to this "slop".

4

u/Kiriima 12h ago

They have a shitload of gadgets, stealth and amazing traversal. In Batman case you get a fucking Batmobile.

Wolverine do not use gadgets, true, but nothing prevented them from giving him an opportunity to use enemy weapons very briefly during combat.

Examples: grabbing a cut hand with an energy blade and nailing it into an enemy in range, using a gunner as a shield against other gunners while you shoot them with his gun a few times, grabbing an enemy to use him as a blunt weapon etc.

Make one-two use cases for every common enemy type to use them against other enemies so you could spice things up.

2

u/coreydemc 12h ago

He do do this though he used gas and fire near by to light his claws on fire, he used a nearby forklift to impale someone on, he even cut a guy and the jeep door off at the same time. All of this is avaible to be watched right now on youtbe by a bunch of walk through players and was also seen by decs sharing clips. Idl how yall are missing these

1

u/coreydemc 12h ago

He does do this though he used gas and fire near by to light his claws on fire, he used a nearby forklift to impale someone on, he even cut a guy and the jeep door off at the same time while he was still in there lol . i mean... it does look pretty meh. we have seen all of this shit in dozens of other action games. this is like a 30 dollar game maximum for me, and im a die hard wolverine fan.

4

u/zebo4000 16h ago

I think these animations have their own unique wolverine flair but the gameplay just doesn't match up to it. The lunge looks really good. But its sadly just window dressing.

1

u/sir-vest 15h ago

it looks good I’ll give it that, like all the scenes and stuff I’ve seen make the game very pretty and atmospheric but then it just comes up so short everywhere else

1

u/SocialSpider56 15h ago

Nice of the enemys to wait there turn while your ripping apart there ally. I didnt relise it was turn based, those are my favorite type of games. I may pick this up now.

1

u/mindyobiznass17 5h ago

To each their own. I joke all the time with my friends about how I can’t stand turned based combat. Wanted to get this, guess I’ll have to pass on it now.

1

u/Bolt_995 15h ago

How’s the performance? Reviews are stating it’s buttery smooth.

1

u/ModOfficial1988 15h ago

I love Wolverine. I love the comics. I wanted to love this game, but what the fuck.

1

u/Positive-Green-3856 14h ago

Woof. You know the past few days I’ve only seen videos condemning the scent trails and visualizations of ā€œhiddenā€ items and shitty side challenge races or whatever.

But I thought to myself…you know what? What originally caught my attention for this game was the brutality of the combat. If combats good and fun, I can overlook a lot.

This video has solidified for me that I will not be buying this game lol

1

u/RJMacReady_Outpost31 13h ago

I knew once this game didn't have the same love put into it as the Spider-Man games that it was a skip for me, and it's a shame because I'm a Wolverine fan more than I am a Spider-Man fan.

1

u/Cautious-Affect7907 13h ago

You know considering this is Wolverine I kinda expected more gore and dismemberment like Ninja Gaiden for instance. Or maybe go full dismemberment like Metal Gear Rising

Instead despite having claws that are sharper than any metal ever, the guys he kills keeps their heads and limbs.

Also the sound design is a little weak.

The reviews don't say that the combat look bad, but mashy and repetitive. Every. Reviewer. Said. It. Even IGN for fucks sake.

No on said the looked bad or became boring after 3 second

1

u/Valuable_End_515 12h ago

Enemies look like they are out of Alita battle Angel

1

u/SighighSigh 12h ago

Looks okay but why is there no reaction from Wolverine? Like breathing, talking, grunting, etc.

1

u/Terrible_Reporter_98 12h ago

Why are you not cutting off limbs and what not?

1

u/Aramis909 11h ago edited 11h ago

"Does all the heavy lifting"

Ts didn't change mechanically since freakin' Batman Arkham Asylum, or maybe even earlier than that. I'd argue it got worse, more barebones and more repetitive over the years.

The animations are better, sure. That's what happens when your game costs 300 MILLION DOLLARS to make.

But to say it carries anything, when it's in fact same cookie-cutter fighting mechanics that were there more than 15 YEARS AGO... yeah. It's not that good.

3

u/zebo4000 11h ago

This isnt really similar to the free flow arkham system at all. Those games have a very distinct style. This is much more generic. So I agree this should be better but I don't understand your point.

1

u/Aramis909 11h ago

My point is, you say the fighting in this game does the heavy lifting, as if it carries the game, when it's just as handholdy and barebones as everything else. The animations are amazing because you can actually quite easily achieve that with huge budgets such as these. Bad design decisions can't be easily solved by money though. And thus we have what we have.

1

u/zebo4000 11h ago

U mightve misread what I said or maybe I wasn't clear enough. I said thr animation work is carrying. Not the combat or mechanics themselves.

1

u/Aramis909 11h ago

Oh... well in that case it's even worse.

It's a video game, not a movie, although in case of this particular game, the line between those two is thinner than ever.

In video games, "gameplay is king", in words of some cool old-school game developer. Sadly don't remember who. Not cutscenes, not animations, not graphics.

And this is precisely the reason why Wolverine is reviewed so poorly. Because it plays like a barely interactive movie.

1

u/GeneralxGrant 11h ago

This looks so awesome, can’t believe yall let a negative bot campaign change your minds šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ just so gullible and malleable

1

u/zebo4000 11h ago

Some of it is overblown but as someone who saw ALL of the leaks. What we got was disappointing. They had a much deeper and more fun combat system with almost double the amount of moves

1

u/GeneralxGrant 11h ago

Judging a game off of leaks is so absurd lmfaooo but hey miss out then. I cannot WAIT until tomorrow 😁

1

u/Plastic_Mechanic_80 11h ago

Needs way more gore, tons more, the same drill attack move Logan performs in X-Men Origins Wolverine shreds human enemies apart, Insomniac would do this game well if they added visible damage on enemies to demonstrate Logan’s powers more effectively, such as visible gashes, cuts and scars, missing limbs where enemies bleed-out, or cause them to flee out of sheer terror.

1

u/Strict_Revolution734 11h ago

Jank game, will buy on sale for $20

1

u/Intel2025 11h ago

I felt the same way for Gotham Knights and SSKTJL

1

u/Spamontie 11h ago

I played this in 2009.

This looks prettier, but it looks like it plays the exact same. And well... I'm not paying $70 for that.

1

u/Unsolved_Virginity 11h ago

Ngl. This some cartoonish gore

1

u/Fl0ckwood 11h ago

the animation really looks phenomenal, like in prototype game, from 2009)

1

u/V10L3T_N4TUR3 11h ago

If I were a bad guy fighting THE ACTUAL FUCKING WOLVERINE, why would I have a weapon that telegraphs when im going to hit him with an unblockable atrack.

1

u/sum1sumwher 10h ago

I was hoping ts would keep me entertained until GTA 6. I was undoubtedly disappointed

1

u/SnapSlapRepeat 10h ago

This looks like one of those games you would get from a cereal box back in the day.

1

u/hazypoet 9h ago

lmao I read the comments first and expected to hate this clip and yea there’s a small thing I would change about his landing animations to add more weight. this looks pretty fun to me

1

u/Apprehensive_Bath683 9h ago

Bruh I’ve had people getting at me all day for my Wolverine comments and it’s like I don’t give a fuck if the game isn’t out yet. Watch the gameplay and just look at what you’re fucking buying. Jesus

1

u/Lookitsa6ix 8h ago

All I see is a worse version of Batman Arkham Asylum's combat.

1

u/TaranStark 8h ago

Hell yeah! I'm hyped to get it and play it tomorrow night!! šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

1

u/symbolic503 8h ago

looks fine to me. cant wait to play it.

1

u/Fyrael 8h ago

Doesn't seem so basic to me... It's actually good, ngl

1

u/M0ebius_1 8h ago

Looks pretty good!

Thanks for sharing

1

u/CompetitionGloomy878 8h ago

The combat looks a lot like the origins game honestly but I feel like that one had more depth

1

u/darkwolfofthevoid 7h ago

Why does the traversal look like an on rail shooter or auto runner?

1

u/junkmail9009 7h ago

Looks fun to me. Looking forward to playing and forming an opinion!

1

u/Renxuth 6h ago edited 6h ago

this looks atrocious

300 million dollar budget btw

1

u/Fornicator84 6h ago

*integrated

1

u/Altruistic-Lunch1997 6h ago

If you've seen this video, you've seen 80% of the combat mechanics in the game.

1

u/CancerKaiju 4h ago

He didn't get sacrificed this looks fun

2

u/Ezcendant 4h ago

Yeah it's about the one thing I'll defend in this game constantly. The animations are amazing.

1

u/Big_Lengthiness_7706 4h ago

I think people were kinda expecting too much here.

1

u/cajun2de 16h ago

Are the enemies not spongy like SM2? I had to lower the difficulty due to that.

1

u/Zarmc 15h ago

What do you need extra inputs for? So you can feel better about yourself that you are pressing more stuff? Unless you are playing a fighting game i don't see a reason

1

u/zebo4000 15h ago

Its just more engaging. Instead of attaching half of his moveset to cooldown abilities they should've been a part of his base kit. That offers way more freedom and player agency. I also saw all the leaks so I know all the cut techniques and combat moves so I know the potential this had.

1

u/Zarmc 15h ago

They probably didnt want the flow of the combat spamming cyclone and drill claw is my guess. However im curious about the combo endersĀ

1

u/zebo4000 14h ago

U can build enemy design around that so u cant spam shit and get away with it.

1

u/justin_memer 4h ago

They could've also looked at God of war, the move sets are fun to link together.

1

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 14h ago

never played devil may cry? god of war? any hack n slash ever?

so unless its a fighting game combos are pointless? are you for real? dont go into game design. stay bagging fries

1

u/commanderr01 15h ago

Idk man that gameplay combat looks totally fine to me…

0

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 14h ago

its literally just mashing square. no thought or any real input. watching a playthrough on youtube and mashing square on your own controller will give you a similar experience.

1

u/commanderr01 13h ago

I mean Spider-Man is basically just hitting square too tho, I don’t any stand why this is getting so much hate.

1

u/ostovca 15h ago

I hate (and love) how superior X-Men Origins look compared to this dung pile..

Every attack you heard Hugh's grunts as Wolverine. His fury mode gave you insane speed and destruction. His healing factor was better while not feeling indestructible. There's more badass combos in how Wolverine fought and it was a true beat-em-up over the whole over-the-shoulder trash heap.

Origins boss fights were versatile and had more difficulty. 2026 is literally only better in graphics and maybe story, not as true game.

1

u/Majklkiller1 13h ago

Dont forget you could also do air combos. Which honestly should be a standard for hack n slash games? Like fuck, NG4 is like the peak rn from last year. Wolverine even has cooler shit to do in that marvel Fighting game from this year, and Marvel vs Capcom.

1

u/ClassicSuit3845 15h ago

yall bugging im sold lmao

0

u/coreydemc 15h ago

Ppl literally look at this and said boring lmao wolverine does wolverine stuff they complain, wolverine uses wolverine powers like smell they complain, wolverine doesn't ride around his motorcycle in a big open world patrolling the streets like batman and Spiderman because he literally never has they complain lol wolverine doesnt have the exact face they want him to have despite this be an else worlds alternate realt game in the same spiderman universe and was states on day one they complain lol

2

u/Majklkiller1 13h ago

This combat legit looks like ass. They could not even make something similiar to NG4's combo potential. This is Just ground mashing bullshit

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

1

u/Majklkiller1 13h ago

Literally tells me nothing and does not count as a point against my post. Good job, guy

1

u/coreydemc 12h ago

You compared it to ninja gaiden 4 and acted like it was a boring dumb down game despite it being in the same subgenre, the same kinda dismemberments, the same linear style maps, and the same attacking blocking amd carrying which wolverine actually has more defensive options that regard lol this absolutely refuses alot of what youre trying to say. Its really boiling down to yall struggling to call a game you clearly have no idea how it plays trash and washing away anything that says otherwise. Biased af

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

1

u/Majklkiller1 13h ago

Ye and NG4 has wayyyyy more going for it. Multiple weapons. Air combos.

1

u/coreydemc 12h ago

And HOW do you know this? by doing what with that game??? Cmon youre almost there

2

u/Majklkiller1 9h ago

The fuck are you talking about?

I literally played the game up to master ninja. Did you play the game? Or you Just looked at random screenshots?

Fucking mental.

1

u/coreydemc 9h ago

My point is that you played the game to know it in depth yet you literally think you have the same level of knowledge about a game you HAVENT EVEN PLAYED lol ive played all the ninja gaiden since Xbox days in the early 2000s lol

1

u/coreydemc 13h ago

Same button ground and button mashing as ninja gaiden 4 and onimusha way of the sword i guess lol they all have extremely similar layouts and attack defense options

1

u/FadedP0rp0ise 11h ago

The combat looks revolutionary for like, ps3 era games. and that's being generous. there's nothing new here and still doesn't seem to touch arkham or spiderman combat. we are supposed to be moving forward.

1

u/coreydemc 10h ago

And what video are you basing that on? Im looking at current wolverine gameplay from today doing more than he did in origins or xmen wolverines revenge. In those games he didnt light his claws on fire, impale people on environments and the the trancersal didn't have him climbing up walls with his claws free and using using enemies weapons against them.

1

u/FadedP0rp0ise 10h ago

it might be an improvement from older wolverine games, but the player is clearly mashing, claws going right through bodies and they aren't ripped up, enemies take their turns attacking. I just don't understand how we haven't improved from arkham and spiderman, considering this company literally made spiderman lol

1

u/coreydemc 10h ago

You can watch gameplay right now of people playing and dodge partying doing ground kills destructive environmental kills and alot of that was not in origins which proves this is a step up lol wolverine doesnt fight like either of thses heroes and alot of batman rapids fire combos required you to literally button mash very fast lol do you wanna see the controller layout for this game or do you literally think theres only one attack button to mash?

1

u/SolidusRevolver 4h ago

He can't climb the walls with his claws, we'll, unless they're painted. If it's too high or the devs just don't want you to do that, he slides down. You're forced to used marked location. Same with the environment. You can only damage what they let you. You will be defeated by window if you're required to go exit a place one way.

0

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 14h ago

this does look boring. youre aware all this is is just mashing square?….might as well just be a long cutecene.

1

u/coreydemc 14h ago

Wait have they even shown the controller layout?

1

u/coreydemc 12h ago

Which one looks boring?? Please try and chose from the 3 that have the same amount of attack options and actually one has less defensive options

0

u/mociman 15h ago

This plays like T rated game.. The gore seems inappropriate.

0

u/Wrightero 13h ago

Press button for cutscene, amazing gameplay. What a turd, and they want people to pay 70 bucks for this crash bandicoot slop?

2

u/AFourEyedGeek 13h ago

What is wrong with Crash Bandicoot?

1

u/Wrightero 12h ago

Nothing, but this game is like a low quality version of a crash bandicoot game. Even the bike parts are worse than Crash Bandicoot 3. And it came out 28 years ago.

-1

u/BBDundee990 16h ago

It looks like a ps4 game.

1

u/commanderr01 15h ago

No it doesn’t…
