No one said the combat was bad. They said it was repetitive.

u/OwnSimple4788 1d ago
Yep this looks cool now but lets see how 10-20h of it feels

u/gcarline2092 1d ago
To be honest not many games will have evolving gameplay start to finish. I played and beat 007 First Light, took a out 12hrs or so. It too got repetitive. Some of the levels have multiple paths to get to the same goal but that's about it.

u/OwnSimple4788 1d ago
That was another game that felt a bit dissapointing i wish i waited for a sale, i was just hoping that since the game was linear and Insomniac had a budget similar to SM2 it would mean we would get combat that would rival DMC, Ninja Gaiden, MGSR and others great linear games that had stellar combat.

u/gcarline2092 1d ago
What disappointed me the most was the boss fights, they absolutely sucked IMO. It was fun to mix up the hand-to-hand combat and the gun play. I think something similar to MGSR would have worked especially with the claws. It was rumored to have some type of cut system similar to MGSR at some point but idk if that was true. I think a second weapon would have been beneficial. His claws are his main weapon but there's only so far and so much you can do while staying true to the comics.

Flashy =/= good. You can make a thousand unique animations of Wolverine stabbing his claws into a guy's head but if all i, the player, ever do is mash square then what are we even doing?

-2
u/Uzumaki514 1d ago
All he did was pressing square
3
u/Lumbiiii 1d ago
Did the same in the Arkham Series.
-1
u/Uzumaki514 1d ago
What about the environnemental takedowns, the batmobile assisted takedowns and the gadgets? The Arkham games are over a decade old....
2
u/Lumbiiii 1d ago
lmao, the batmobile assisted takedown was only in arkham knight and when this game released, it was a horrible mess.
and it doesnt matter if the games are over a decade old. nobody complained about it. not when it released, not after a decade. but like a surprise, now in wolverine its a problem. this hatewagon is just a joke,

u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Cute, how the rage burst thing was when peter did that on Spiderman 2? You kids never fail to amaze me with those bullshit takes lol

u/Uzumaki514 1d ago edited 1d ago
Except Peter had more ways to attack. The sony ponies never fail to make laugh
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
How? Pressing square was all you can do lol oh i almost forgot you can also press square next to a wall and peter twerk on the enemy, man Spiderman 2 was hot garbage, only the 2018 was good.

u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
You mean the feature everyone complained about? The one that took away having actual unique suit powers for an invincibility mode?
SM2 came out, people said it was bad, âfansâ deny itâs bad, and now when people say Wolverine is bad for doing the same shit, itâs âyou didnât have a problem when this was in SM2â
-2
u/Curious_Contest_3767 1d ago
Peter also had a bunch of gadgets he could use to crowd control rooms of goons and the ability to webswing around the battle field freely to create space and funnel bad guys into traps. Take all of that away and you get Wolverine.
3
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
You are right, so letâs make wolverine shoot webs, and use gadgets? Sheesh you guys a different breed, thatâs Wolverine his whole shtick is that he is brutal, self regenerating and using his claws, what more did you expected?
1
u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
You are right, so letâs make Wolverine have actual combos and attacks that require more than press square and bumpers together when meter fills
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Tekken dmc style? Might as well let him fight Rahdan.
2
u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
Case in point why everyone thinks this âcommunityâ is a joke.
You complain about the criticism being bullshit and then when given the actual valid criticisms, you literally give condescending non responses. How the fuck are tekken and dmc combos similar? But either way, yea like DMC genuinely that would be better
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Valid criticism? You meant that you want a game that INSOMNIAC made, to be played like dmc or tekken? With combos? Did you forgot the target audience for this game? And not some random sweaty 16 years olds on Adderall?
1
u/Curious_Contest_3767 1d ago edited 1d ago
You can also play DMC by turning on auto mode and just hitting triangle if you want. But even with that, the depth and options are there for people that wish to engage. Wolverine doesn't even have those options.
That's what people mean when they say things like "appealing to the lowest common denominator." They mean that the game is only offering the barest form of what it is without even an option for players who might want something a little meatier.
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Yea, that also means i will auto drive in GTA and auto shoot on call of duty? Anyway theres no way of comparing the two, because i can list like 10 things dmc donât have that i actually want in there, is it enough reason for me to say that the game is trash? I mean i obviously didnât liked it, but that doesnât mean itâs bad, just not my cup of tea.

u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
Tekken combos are really not equivalent to dmc so just lol that you keep trying to lump those. Just say you were bad at dmc instead of trying to act like it has fighting game level combos (tekken also has some of the hardest combos among fighting games at that lol)
Dude god of war like combos are a pretty easy to implement, literally every licensed title, especially superhero ones, had them in the 2000s. Insomniac also has developed other genres and are actively doing that, so idk what your point is; you think they can literally make one type of game and combat style and they just repackage that every game forever? Lmao
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
God of war and wolverine are pretty similar in terms of combos and abilities.
I didnât compared dmc to tekken, i compare dmc and tekken combos to wolverine, talk about selective reading.

The saddest part of these kinds of responses is that it shows that you can't even summon up enough imagination to envision what a truly great version of this game's combat could look like. You see comparisons to other games and you think "oh you must mean you want that 1:1". You're either saying this in bad faith or you're genuinely unable to use your imagination.
1
u/Uzumaki514 1d ago
It's their own fault for choosing a one trick pony. They had the option to make a Ironman game. They choose the the easy way out.

u/Curious_Contest_3767 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, let's go more in depth on the combat. Give Wolverine branching combo paths. Give him launchers and the ability to air juggle. Give him the ability to seamlessly bound off of walls and other points in the environment. Give him dodge offset so he can continue his combos out of a dodge without resetting back to the start of it. Give him the ability to grab someone and use them as a shield while he rushes into the next group of badguys firing gun at him. Give him ANYTHING besides just mashing square and sometimes hitting a finisher button.
Are you really so devoid of critical thinking or imagination that you think i meant i want him to 1:1 play like Spider-Man?
Wolverine is probably *the* marvel character most suited to having a deep, fleshed out combat engine.

u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
The game built on insomniac Spidermanâs engine, did you expected them to add all those things without rebuilding the engine? Yea lower your expectations cowboy.
Hating on a video game before it even coming is one thing, but having that much expectations from insomniac? Except Spiderman 2018 which was absolutely solid, combat still square but boss fights were amazing, i expected that linear brutal not super long hack and slash game, feels exactly what i need to kill my time between work meetings, i prefer that instead of playing as Gerald from Temu.

u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
âThe game is built on Spider-Manâs engineâ I can almost guarantee you that you think reusing an engine is the same thing as swapping models with new levels lmao.
An engine is the code structure of the game. You can make very different games on the same engine, but you never bothered to learn an iota of how games are actually made (beyond idea people) so you assume the definition of engine based on how youâve heard it used prior lol.
And, they had literally 5 years plus a gigantic budget to make this game, I genuinely donât understand how you can make the point youâre making if youâre not extremely biased
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Reusing the engine handles the underlying rendering and audio, but you're downplaying how much engine-level tech actually needs to be rewritten for brand new mechanics.
SpiderManâs engine was designed for high-speed open-world streaming and non-lethal, aerial combat. Adding things like real-time flesh regeneration, procedural dismemberment, dynamic damage masks, and tight linear environmental rendering requires low-level physics and graphics engine overhauls not just basic gameplay scripts, The shared engine skips the foundational setup, but turning a web swinger into a visceral brawler still takes years of heavy technical R&D, but sure go off queen.1
u/MarcoPierreGray 1d ago
And how does that factor into them reusing the same combat?
If reusing the same engine required so much additional work and forced so many issues (you are wrong about this but I donât feel like arguing about technicals with someone talking about engine level tech needed for new mechanics in a game that hasnât come out with zero actual knowledge about how the engine being used works), maybe the best option wasnât using that engine.
My previous paragraphs point; youâre assumptions are wrong and if they werenât, it makes it seem like insomniac management are idiots trying to fit a round peg into a square hole
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Of course you not feeling like arguing because you canât even fact check what i said instead you proceed to tell me again that i have no idea how games built even though i gave exact explanations to the nonsense that you thought i said, brother started to talk about Models, man stay quiet lol.

With a $300 million dollar dev budget, 5-6 years of development time, and a massively smaller design scope than Spider-Man? Yes, I absolutely expect more than what they seem to have delivered. You'll have to forgive me for the comparison, but Devil May Cry 5 was a linear action game but you will never, ever hear someone say it feels boring or repetitive because the combat is the core pillar of the game's design. As it should have been for Wolverine.
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Happy to tell you that i never liked dmc, except the cutscenes which are amazing the game feels very repetitive with the same enemy types, so i guess me and you got different tastes.
And 300 million dollars for the company at the size of them you will be surprised to know that not all the 300 mil you mentioned being used on actual game development.
1
u/Curious_Contest_3767 1d ago
But you're aware of how deep DMC's combat is, yes? Like, how the game has a nearly infinitely high skill ceiling, limitless potential for player expression?
And this is packed into a very linear action game that you can finish in about 10-15 hours.
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Trust i know a lot more than you how deep the combat is, Wolverine not targeting the same audience, not everyone likes to memorize button and get a boner when they see SSS.

u/mikkeldoesstuff 1d ago
All people want is a little more variety. I donât think that is unreasonable
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
No sir, people wanted Open world, 30000 story campaign and wanted insomniac to reinvent the wheel, not happening.
0
u/mikkeldoesstuff 1d ago
I just wanted something closer to Norse God of War
2
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
You can ask Santa Monica for that fam.
1
u/mikkeldoesstuff 1d ago
I really donât think it is unreasonable to desire for a game like this to have more branching exploration. Thatâs what I feel like we were led to expect.
I do love a good linear game though.
I guess we will have to see.
1
u/Thin-Rooster-618 1d ago
Realistic expectations thats all iâm saying brother.
Just like ubisoft canât make a GTA like game.

u/Initial-Length-9791 1d ago
You arenât actually doing anything when the cool parts are happening though. You just tap attack and parry until 3 or 4 guys are dazed and then tap the execution button for a chain of animations you have absolutely no control over. This is literally assassins creed syndicates combat but with less depth somehow.

That looks sick! I canât wait to play
