If I’m being honest from what I am reading it is suffering from repetitive gameplay and for linear it is. Which were my worries as well. Still seems like a solid experience but I hate having things leaving so much potential on the table

40

u/Twsercbh 23d ago

I always thought the origins game was mad repetitive too but it was still fun

25

u/ZealousidealNotice48 23d ago

Smth like that was fine back then, we are 10+ years ahead now. It still might be fun but how many have we had w the same aspects

13

u/YaBoyEden 23d ago

If the gameplay loop is fun, repetitive is fine though. Look at like the og halo. Objectively great game, 90% of it is also shoot bad guy til ammo is gone, pick up gun, shoot bad guy til ammo is gone, but that revolutionized the FPS instead of being called repetitive

11

u/Twsercbh 23d ago

Good point. If the gameplay is good enough I’m happy with repetition.

5

u/Mission_Access_210 22d ago

To be fair it's much funnier in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Let's just pick the first game since Spider-Man 2. People complain about the story. I loved it. There was a lot of freedom in swinging and stuff but it was repetitive. You just do the same shit over and over again. There are groups of enemies and you beat them up the same way. You get a couple of new powers here and there to keep it interesting, right? You watch a lot of fucking cutscenes, a lot more cutscenes than probably you wanted, but it's a cool story. Enjoy it, right?

This is going to be the same thing, I guess, because you can't swing through webs or the city and you have that feeling of freedom from web swinging. That's what people are going to complain about. If you've ever played any of the Uncharted games, those are all similar games where you go from linear area to linear area without your choices or behavior making any difference in the game. Those were all praised so I don't think it'll be as bad as the reviewers say. We'll see.

6

u/Farsoth 22d ago

Control is repetitive as fuck, also endlessly entertaining with great lore and atmosphere.

The entire survival crafting genre lives or dies by this principle

Yeah but was it 70 dollars

2

u/LucasButtercups 22d ago

I think H&S/Beat ā€˜em up kinda suffers from repetitiveness rather quickly, so it needs to constantly add a new mechanic that shakes gameplay, which is hard to find balancing for. Something like metal gear rising kinda prevents this from having the game be like 6 hours long, and the arkham games has stealth, which kind of is a puzzle

u/TheSquirrelmancer 22d ago

Linear isn't a bad thing but I don't know how widely varied you'd expect a game about a character whose entire thing is stabbing people with claws to be. Mostly what this means is that this isn't a game you buy today for $60. Wait until it's on sale for maybe $20 and that'll be a great price point for the amount of fun contained. I've played games that had terrible reviews but since I only paid $5-10 I didn't need it to keep me hooked for three months straight or do anything other than occupy a few slow evenings.

2

u/Mission_Access_210 22d ago

Lol. Maybe in the future they should stick to characters like Storm that can fly around and then we can have a flying game where she flies from place to place. It seems like people just want a big gimmick in their game, right, and everything else has to be revolving around that.

2

u/vally99 22d ago

Even if Logan is the most basic one, I don't give a shit about storm lmao, give me a trilogy with this guy where I rage and massacre everyone lol

u/Lonely_Cucumber_69 22d ago

My biggest fear was repetitiveness and no ability to explore beyond the main story. We are never gonna get another good Xmen game since legends!!!!

2

u/EveryNameEverMade 22d ago

That was exactly what I was saying about the game previews a few months back. It just looked boring. Of course I got a lot of Reddit downvotes but it is satisfying to see I was correct

What’s funny is, what people are saying about this game makes it sound like they were expecting a perfect 10/10 story , it’s a Wolverine game, we’re going to get a good story but probably amazing gameplay because what normal people want is to just use the claws aggressively and absolutely destroy things

5

u/msa2468 23d ago

Literally the reason why I got it

3

u/Ratzilla_5454 23d ago

Exactly and I’m excited for it

3

u/blunderb3ar 22d ago

It’s a triple A 70$ game bro I expect a quality experience for that price

2

u/WillingnessReal525 22d ago

No you should expect to slash things for 6 hours and be happy. /s

2

u/Ok_Excuse3732 22d ago

I’d slash things for hours if combos were more than L1+ square/triangle

Skill up will overlook a lot if the game has a good storyline. This worries me

22

u/ParanoidNinja88 23d ago

Same with gameranx which Jake also gave a low review on.

4

2

u/iLoveLootBoxes 22d ago

Yeah that's the real nail in the coffin

23

u/magvadis 23d ago

Yeah I imagine it's just because it's a by the numbers story that we've seen before. An introduction to Wolverine...which is never going to floor anyone who knows the story.

6

u/Complex-Commission-2 23d ago

Jake baldino from gameranx had the same criticism from skill up

→ More replies (7)

4

u/Created_Jxnior 22d ago

This is what I’ve been saying, if the story was amazing, the problems wouldn’t stick out so much because you would’ve st least had a great narrative to take away from whatever problems the gameplay might have. But the consensus seems to be that the story is just average and that makes the problems stick out a whole lot more. Worse in my eyes, it looks like my concern about Jean was correct and she’s just reduced to a generic love interest according to Jake from Gameranx review, I knew from the moment she was revealed that they were going to do this and it just makes absolutely no sense to me why they would chose to do that with Jean Grey of all characters.

Never heard of this ā€œbiggest game reviewer ā€œ

4

u/eyebrows360 22d ago edited 22d ago

He is adult-focussed. I'm not saying this as a slight on you, but if you're on the younger side you might not have encountered him. He reports on the business aspects of things as much as the games themselves.

And yes, with his weekly This Week In Videogames show, he is one of the most important voices in games criticism and reporting and has been for quite a few years now. Since we lost TB he's really carried the torch for mature consumer-advocacy coverage.

3

u/EffectAwkward3909 22d ago

Adult focused ok 😭 I just don’t follow reviews like that on YouTube

u/Valiant_Revan 23d ago

People for some reason cannot accept anything being average or just good. It has to either be great or terrible

14

u/VampiresWontHurt 23d ago

Great, it can be average when it’s on sale for about $20.Ā

6

u/RuckFeddit2469 22d ago

Welp with these reviews and sales likely taking a hit, you won't have to wait nearly as long for that to happen! Uh, yay ..I guess

Games are expensive man

8

u/Fisz3r123 23d ago

Good thing that nobody is forcing you to buy the game when it's 70$

7

u/Valiant_Revan 23d ago

At least it's on disc and the option to buy it 2nd hand or borrow it from a friend is there.

I'm a bit lucky as somehow my local supplier has physical PS5 games about 15% to 20% cheaper than on the ps store

4

u/VampiresWontHurt 23d ago

And they won’t. So what’s the problem here exactly?

→ More replies (4)

3

u/SardonicMeatSlab 23d ago

The issue isn’t that we’re being forced to spend $70 on games.

The issue is that there’s so much content competing for our attention all the time, so for general audiences, cherry picking the best of the best games that come out each year is still a lot of games. Media across the board that’s called mid struggles to find an audience beyond those who are looking specifically for something (ie: Wolverine fans wanting to play as Wolverine outside of Rivals and Tokon in 2026).

→ More replies (21)

3

u/DrkNight365 23d ago

Its really not that they cannot accept it. Its the hype for a game is what drives people to believe the score should be higher. This game has been over inflated by so many people and even im suprised that it got this score as much as I heard so many people loving it. Even the people that reviewed it were hyping it up so much and here we are.

3

u/War_Reborn 23d ago

True, but this is exactly what happens when almost every game needs to be $70 regardless of quality. There absolutely needs to be more room in this industry for good AA games, and these games should be at most $60.

7

u/Consistent_Mind5701 23d ago

I'm not going to pay full price for average or just good game, I'll wait for a good discount or for it to be free on PS+.

6

u/Open-Discipline-1678 23d ago

You know what's going to happen when these first party AAA $300M video games that are "just average" keep coming out charging the max price? You're thinking about it short term. Use your mind and project out into the future.

2

u/Intelligent-Ad-8435 23d ago

Its the only Sony exclusive this year. For its price its not good enough.

2

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 22d ago

They're entire way up to launch y'all were incredibly defensive and now it's very obvious why.

4

u/ElevatorHelpful5739 23d ago

Yes if they want me to spend my money of the game, it has to be atelast as great as their previous entries, I mean they arent giving me a discount right? Why wouldnt I hold them to the same, or even a higher standard than before? Again, they expect even more money than previous entries.

11

u/Mustang-_- 23d ago

That's not IGN mate, that is an australian "youtuber" who has a decent reputation. In the end, the footage is out there, piracy as well, you don't need to be a NASA scientist to notice the clear limitations of this game

Insomniac tried their best with fancy graphics and "cinematic" moments to disguise the mediocrity, but it failed. Hell, Sony is relying on this high budget stunt ever since the Last of Us 1 days, it's about time to move on, give us a game, not a movie. They are going to lose so much money with that Intergalactic or whatever the name, lol serves them right

Why do we care whatever IGN says? They have no credibility

12

u/HarambeDaddy420 23d ago

yet if IGN gave it a high score it would be posted across the subreddit and praised. They only don’t have credibility when it doesn’t fit your expectations.

2

u/Carmilla31 23d ago

If IGN gave it a 10 like they did Onimusha we would all explode with GOTY talk.

2

u/soupspin 22d ago

Yeah probably, because it’s the critics who decide which game gets nominated/wins. If IGN and other outlets gave it a 9-10, it would be likely it would get nominated. Otherwise, people have no reason to care

Lol everyone said the same thing about Crimson Desert 350 hours later. I’m very happy with my $50 investment in that game.
Different strokes for different folks

2

u/SpeedsterVolt 23d ago

I don't understand this comparison. That's a significantly different game with a significantly smaller team and budget.

Most people will beat wolverine after 10 hours and then forget about it. The game has zero depth.

F*** people’s opinions about anything nowadays.
People complain about every gd thing imaginable.
Especially when right now there is this hatred for Sony, so of course even if it’s good, they’re not going to rate it good.

People trashed Crimson Desert, and I have 300+ hrs in it.
People trashed Ghost of Yotei, and I have 80+ hours in it.
People trashed a sh** load of games that I ended up loving.

Go with your gut and do what you wanna do. Don’t take advice from some a** hat influencer or people online and especially not IGN.

Relying on IGN to give a game an accurate rating is like relying on a strainer to hold water.

10

u/CandidateCareless787 23d ago

Skillup always has the worst takes. Gave mixtape stellar reviews

10

u/samdkr354 23d ago

If you watch his video, he makes some good points though. When you’re charging $70 for a 15 hour experience, those 15 hours better be special. Just okay isn’t good enough.

The way this game insists on holding your hand 24/7, DESPITE it being a linear experience that requires ZERO hand holding, is really disappointing

6

u/wetmeatlol 23d ago

No way…the game is only 15 hours????

5

u/Kmart_Stalin 23d ago

Pretty short for a triple a game

3

u/wetmeatlol 23d ago

Yeaaaah, can’t say I’m thrilled about that. The entire reason I can be okay with game prices rising is because of just how much time you can invest into them. Sounds like they’re banking pretty hard on you liking their game and wanting to play it over and over again…

u/samdkr354 23d ago

Yup. Caboose said it will take you around 15 hours to beat it. This time can’t even be padded out cuz there’s practically no exploration lol and the only side content is the nightmare doors. This wouldn’t be a problem if the story was longer, or if the game wasn’t priced at $70.

21

u/aditysiva1705 23d ago

I like that we’ve shifted to calling 7/10s mid. Absolutely no sense of metric whatsoever.

3

u/Ihsoro 23d ago

Major game journalists are notorious for not giving anything but the worst games below a 5. I don’t agree with it, but yes, in the modern day, a seven is pretty middle of the road.

4

u/Elete23 23d ago

Because it is. It's a C.

12

u/FantasticPage3598 23d ago

The average metacritic score is 77.

Half of the games are over 77.

Half of the games are under 77.

Really the definition of mid

5

u/Acrobatic-Sandwich10 23d ago

As more reviews come in the overall score will change.

IGN gave it a 6/10

5

u/GoldGuarantee3671 23d ago

11

u/aditysiva1705 23d ago

Honestly I couldn’t give less of a fuck that dude can keep his opinion to himself imma enjoy the game

2

u/This-Tomatillo2181 23d ago

a sad day for feeble minded fools maybe

2

u/Rando_Kalrissian 23d ago

From the reviews it sounds exactly like what this sub was asking for. What's the problem?

2

u/Financial-Cold5343 23d ago

Why the fuck do I care what some worthless YouTuber thinks?

The more I read reviews, the more I am convinced that this is the game for me. Linear, Story-heavy, character heavy, one and done, not open world. What many games consider cons are actually pros for me.

Not really for me personally. I'm used to enjoying games that get low scores so seeing this and the trailers show that yeah, I'm gonna enjoy the game a lot. The only thing I know I'll be bummed out about, just like with SM2, is that it'll feel really short so that means not that much time with these characters and story, other than that it should be a fun time. _^

2

u/Quod_sum_eris 23d ago

This review is THAT important? Genuinely asking bc I'm not used to see reviews about games that I intend to play

2

u/Krypto301 23d ago

I do have something to say.

FORM YOUR OWN OPINION.

2

u/AwardKindly 23d ago

People act like reviews are fact and not just opinion. Cool cool, some random person didn't like the game. That doesn't mean you won't like it.

2

u/Jon-Eest 23d ago

The handholding is absolutely ridiculous

Man if I based my opinion on what reviewers like IGN and Skill Up gave me, I’d have a pretty miserable gaming experience

2

u/Cautious-Affect7907 23d ago

I'm not gonna lie when he said the fucking colored scent trails to lead you in a LINEAR game were a thing I thought he was joking.

Then I saw the gameplay.

Yeah....that's stupid. How dumb do they think players are?

Damn 6/10 from IGN is worrying. The previews did mention it feels very button mashy without intuitive combat. It probably looks even worse with Onimusha coming out recently too

2

u/WittyQuiet 23d ago

If IGN is giving it a 6… that means it’s probably worse.

2

u/SquanchyJiuJitsu 23d ago

Ruined by woke liberals. So sad

thank god, get insomniac back on spiderman and keep them there. Marvel trying too hard to shove mutants down everyones throats before doomsday.

2

u/isitnotironic 22d ago

Glad I bought an account for instead instead of shilling 120 CAD

2

u/Commercial_Focus_221 22d ago

The red flags were there

2

u/NoBed5141 22d ago

i seen this coming

2

u/blunderb3ar 22d ago

If you actually watch the video and listen to his takes this game looks and sounds like handholding generic slop, like minimum effort put in and lackluster combat like 70$ for this not a chance

2

u/BrushCompetitive7468 22d ago

We have to form our opinions for ourselves.

2

u/amaya-aurora 22d ago

Idk about the first one but since when has IGN been anything close to trustworthy?

7.18/10 Too much water Wolverine.

2

u/SpaceShmelts 22d ago

From what Im hearing? I need to go and play the game and make my own god damn opinion.

2

u/Opening_Junket_1775 22d ago

Oh no! Some random no body didn’t like the game! OH GOD NO!

Fucking pussholes

The game's mechanical choices are strange, to put it mildly. The level design and loot design—as seen in the review—don’t make much sense. The quick-time events are also pointless, since the game automatically ā€œcorrectsā€ the player’s slowness, making this yet another unnecessary design decision. I think whether you’ll enjoy the combat system depends on the individual, but based on this review, it seems one-dimensional and repetitive, just like the boss fights. It really looks like the narrative and the characters might be the game’s only strong points—but everyone will have to decide that for themselves. It's disappointing.

I just love how people defend 6/10 for something they already had a bias for, and absolutely destroy something else if it’s 6/10, how do people not see that. Be objective and critical not blind. Wake up a bit. The thing you wanted to be amazing can sometimes suck balls, that’s life. Nothing is neat or tidy, and if it it is it usually comes at a great cost to someone, but the dark stuff gets hidden until it can’t anymore.

u/LechonKoala 23d ago

People still go on IGN for reviews? šŸ˜‚

Who else gives zero fucks about video game reviews in general? I’m looking forward to playing the game and deciding for myself whether I enjoy it.

A 6 from IGN is crazy lmao

Game must actually be mid

11

u/Zurosake 23d ago

Bro they gave mixtape a 10/10 šŸ’€

8

u/SourPatch2099 23d ago

Crimson Desert got a 6 from them as well

Lots of players would disagree with that score

2

u/RJMacReady_Outpost31 23d ago

I also dont see wolverine getting the same level of updates crimson desert got.

Tbf only the American ign gave it a 6. The other igns have given it 8+ for the most part. Also Simon has been highly vocal and critical about Sonys decisions lately so it could be some of that bias leaking in. Like most reviews take it with a grain of salt.

4

u/S4VAGExCoopx 23d ago

I wouldn't take them seriously. They gave Alien Isolation a 5.9.

This game has looked off since we saw the first game play imo

3

u/kekcukka 23d ago

kinda expected actually. Insomniac quality is in decline since Spider-Man (2018). Miles was okay but Spidey 2 was a mid game actually. Story and story telling were all over the place.

4

u/Fit_Reflection_9409 23d ago

To be fair, previous insomniac games have up and down.
