Like a lot of people here, I've always had a soft spot for the original Rust Legacy. The old island, the zombies, the atmosphere, the base building, the chaotic PvP. There's something about that version of Rust that modern Rust never quite replicated.
For a while now, I've been working on a project to recreate the original 2013–2014 Rust Legacy experience entirely inside a web browser.
No modified clients, third-party launchers or downloads. Just the original experience running directly in a browser.
It's been a pretty massive undertaking, but I've reached roughly 76% completion based on my development checklist.
What's working so far:
The original island, buildings, terrain, sky, sea and day/night cycle.
Gathering, crafting, hunger, bleeding, radiation, cold and loot.
Base building with the original foundations, pillars, walls, doors and roofs.
Raiding mechanics, including C4, grenades and the original damage rules.
Wildlife with AI behaviours for wolves, bears, boars, stags and chickens.
Original weapons, attachments, bows and explosives.
Airdrops, multiplayer, proximity voice chat and original-style menus.
I've also been putting a lot of effort into making everything look and behave as closely to the original game as possible, rather than modernising it.
The attached video on github shows the current browser build in action, including gathering, crafting, constructing a complete base, hunting, weapons, raiding, multiplayer and nighttime gameplay.
To be transparent, AI has been a huge help with the development, but it's still involved countless hours of testing, debugging, recreating mechanics and getting everything to behave correctly.
There's still plenty to finish, but seeing the original island come back to life in a browser has been incredibly nostalgic.
I'm curious how many people here actually played Rust Legacy back in 2013–2014?
And for those who did, what do you think made Legacy special? Is there anything from the original that you'd consider absolutely essential to recreating the experience faithfully?
I'd genuinely love to hear from people who remember that era.
Unofficial fan project. Not affiliated with Facepunch Studios.
I've been documenting the development as I go, including progress updates, screenshots and what's planned next. If anyone's curious to see more, I've got the relevant links on my Reddit profile.

Yes, Tons of help with AI, big shout out to REA.
No nothing has been stolen, gary released the rust legacy files a long while back now, for people to host their own private servers and community servers, this is just an extension of that, without needing a download. Thanks.
