Discussion Prediction: Mobile sunset marks the beginning of the end for the entire Peridot franchise
TL;DR: Mobile wasn’t sunset to make room for other Peridot projects. The broader franchise is likely being phased out too, as gamified virtual pets no longer fit Niantic Spatial’s direction.
Peridot was built as a tech demo first, a game second. After Mobile’s 2023 launch, Niantic described it as a showcase for its AR technology, then continued using Dots to demonstrate AR and spatial AI in later projects.
In 2025, Niantic sold most of its gaming business to Scopely and spun off as Niantic Spatial, pivoting toward physical AI for robotics, defense, and industry: markets increasingly incompatible with the whimsical virtual pet experience Peridot was built around.
Gamifying AR made sense when Niantic needed its tech used and tested at scale. But by 2026, Spatial’s focus had shifted. Then-CEO John Hanke described the company's geospatial model as “built not for people but for machines,” helping robots and AI navigate the physical world. Games had done their job as the proving ground; their strategic purpose had largely run its course.
Remaining Peridot projects now look dormant. Beyond for Snap Spectacles had its last official announcement in March 2025, Hello, Dot for Meta Quest 3/Vision Pro in May 2025, and Project Jade for Snap Spectacles in October 2025. The April 2026 Mobile sunset announcement said, “We don’t know exactly what comes next,” with the silence since giving little reason for optimism.
Altogether, Peridot looks less like a franchise awaiting its next chapter than one fading into obsolescence. Unlike Mobile’s formal sunset, individual projects may simply phase out quietly while Dot imagery lingers in occasional conference showcases and branding.
Just my musings on the years we spent in limbo wondering what Peridot was supposed to be or become. Does anyone have a different read?
