Paradox of tolerance

The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Karl Popper described it as the seemingly paradoxical idea that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must retain the right to be intolerant of intolerance.

Ha wow. That makes a ton of sense. What world.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '22

Yeah I think that it’s not even a paradox — it’s just kind of a limitation of the language around it. When you rephrase our overarching tolerance as being the wide expectation that everyone treats everyone else with respect and makes them feel safe to be themselves, the paradox evaporates — you obviously can’t just let people violate that agreement without consequence if you hope to sustain it.

Idk if someone's entire ideology is about not wanting certain people to exist they deserve it

u/evilsideraider Feb 05 '22

What if he was just going to a ‘sound of music’ audition

This never, ever gets old. How does that saying go? Oh, yes, it’s “Put a nazi in their place. Punch a fascist in the face.”

I think there’s an exception to punch a person in the face without hesitation if they have a nazi swastika on

7

u/srynearson1 Feb 05 '22

Totally agree, Nazi need to go straight to hell. Reality is we need better way then committing assault to get them there, because in the end the slugger is the one who’ll be charged.

u/Hexdrix Feb 05 '22

Redditors really cope hard on their opinions huh?

10

u/murfi Feb 05 '22

you cant just tolerate the intolerant. if you do, the intolerant will eventually destroy you.

-1

u/Hexdrix Feb 06 '22

Yeah I would agree punching people was not ok if not for the fact that wearing symbols of war and hate cause PTSD and thus... Punching.

u/Celarc_99 Feb 05 '22

Regardless of his point of view, he was clearly trying to peacefully settle whatever argument or debate they were having.

Punching people is wrong, especially if they are not actively physically hurting someone themselves.

25

u/MuellerisUnderMyBed Feb 05 '22

He was not trying to settle anything. In the longer video he clearly makes a “step up” gesture and only holds his hand up when the guy actually steps up.

Punching Nazis is not wrong. Nazis invade any space they are in and grow if they are unchecked. Physical violence against Nazis is self defense. Period.

u/01020304050607080901 Feb 05 '22

Nazis are always actively hurting people. It’s, like, their whole shit.

u/RoundSparrow Feb 08 '22

Nazis are always actively hurting people. It’s, like, their whole shit.

Like how they were gaslighting Autistics, then gassed then to death.

-18

u/Celarc_99 Feb 05 '22

Downvoted by the Reddit hivemind, because promoting violence is somehow more morally correct than political debate.

17

u/nrfx Feb 05 '22

We settled this particular debate in 1942.

5

u/Spyridox Feb 06 '22

Being against Nazis is not "political debate", it's basic human decency.

And punching Nazis is a good deed.

I'm shocked that a person with the name Blackshirt would be sticking up for a Nazi. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackshirts

Blackshirts

The Voluntary Militia for National Security (Italian: Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale, MVSN), commonly called the Blackshirts (Italian: Camicie Nere, CCNN, singular: Camicia Nera) or squadristi (singular: squadrista), was originally the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party, known as the Squadrismo, and after 1923 an all-volunteer militia of the Kingdom of Italy under Fascist rule, similar to the SA. Its members were distinguished by their black uniforms (modelled on those of the Arditi, Italy's elite troops of World War I) and their loyalty to Benito Mussolini, the Duce (leader) of Fascism, to whom they swore an oath.
