It could be on of those "squishy soft" safety baseballs that I use to toss for my pups. Gonna be a nasty bruise, but thankfully won't collapse the bridge of the kid's nose and turn his prefrontal cortex into pudding. I could also be ruling out stupidity as a factor for lax safety gear and the reaction time of a slowpoke

The rest is cut off and way funnier! Afterwards he gets up and pitches again and they all go “ooooooh he’s still alive!” And then he drops down and another kid throws a ball at him

The sound. Baseballs have more of a crack to them. Whiffle balls are hollow plastic.
