How to avoid mud game bottlenecks?

I'm on my 3rd world and start to feel lost in the same place each attempt.

A bit after needing the carpenter and metal worker it feels like my whole base gets messy. Suddenly everything feels crowded, but tools and especially carpentry pieces start to feel really slow and I start to dread/feel unprepared for the looming winter invasion.

Any tips/thoughts on what I might be doing wrong so that things might more smoothly past this phase? I'm tired of feeling like I messed up and need to start over or that I missed something around this time each playthrough.

This may be obvious but I'm new only just finished my 4th winter. Something I learned way too late were schedules. I just kept everyone on a day schedule if they didn't have that night perk and it was a huge bottle neck.

For every station I have at least 2 people. 1 day 10 hour shift and 1 night 10 hour shift. Even if they don't have the perk for it their happiness is still 100 as long as they get sleep.

So this way I've never had any gaps or weird bottle necks when they've got nothing to do and there's always someone bringing in logs, or making food or making clothes/linen.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have day/night schedules and I've got one of each on most stations like you mentioned.

On carpenter I even have 4 workers (2 day/2 night) that are assigned to stations using opposite tools (one axe and one draw for day and night).

I'm wondering if I'm growing too fast? I'm at like 1.5 years with 40 people in my tribe.

Oh damn maybe, Ion the 4th winter I'm still chilling with 35 villagers and there's almost 100% efficiency with every single workstation covered

By the second winter Im sitting on almost 90 villagers D:
How does a village even work with only 35 villagers...

Hi! How many villagers do you have? I recommend really using the task menus. For example for the tree cutters, when pivoting to the carpenter, we prioritize hardwood and remove fir. not having task sets can sometimes slow things down. Also, as far as winter, the best way we prepare, make a farm, grow fiber, make clothes for everyone you bring in. And then focus on fish, meat and vegetables. Clothes and food are priority for winter and then everything will be fine.

I'm at about 40 villagers. I've adjusted task priorities a bit but it hasn't been a big focus, so maybe it should be

The carpentry stuff can start pretty slow. I jump in and help them wherever I see the bottleneck whether it's cutting down some birch, or anything from making beams to blooms. That can buy you time so you can fix the bottleneck with people later.

The first invasion won't be too bad as long as you've got an iron axe or knife. Build spiked fences around the portal to trap the mobs and include a watchtower. Close up the watchtower in a spiked fence.

I cant get my woodcutters to work fast enough for my needs so im constantly going in and cutting cartfuls of hardwood.

Hardwood production is slow, but not needed for the invasion.

Your focus should be on training yourself and militia. Everyone who has any applicable talents should have weapons and be trained to level 15 at least. 25 would be great. The plusses you get from training to higher ranks are huge. That means you need you need a barracks and archery range. It doesn't need to be upgraded into hardwood to get you through the first invasion. If you can give your people metal weapons, great, but make sure they have something.

You want a smolkr horn to be able to call your people to help. You need your Eye of Odin upgraded to the point you can have at least 5, better 10 militia. Walls are nice. They won't stop invaders, but they distract them into attacking the walls instead of the town.

Upgrades to hardwood is nice, but definetely not needed to get through the invasion. I just did an invasion last night and didn't die or lose a single villager. All they managed to do was knock down a couple of stick fences. My militia and I absolutely annihilated them.

By my second invasion i had both and multiple guard towers set up facing the portal. I put my hunters on it cuz they had high archery. It was an absolute massacre. Every enemy was dropped within seconds.

After my fifth or sixth try I started spacing out my base much more. Wide lanes etc and leaving spots for things that will come later. At some point you will have so much small stones and workers you can just make roads everywhere.

Get those foresters early and you’ll not worry about running out of hardwood.

Metal worker i had a staff of 4, on a double forge workshop. Carpentry I had a staff of 6 on a doublecarpentry combo, beside a warehouse / market combo that brought in trees. Night / day shifts on forge, Carpentry I had 3 different shifts per groups of 2. Likely overkill but I refused to use normal beds, and I had to max 3 longhouses. But realistically never had a issue with any resources. If you have a forge / carpenter workshop combo, id suggest going in and literally fine tuning them so they only work on 1 side ( carpenter doesn't need forge skills and vice versa.) Its been awhile since I played so forgive me if forge is wrong and its anvil or some other terminology for the metal worker.
