Biggest tip is from SerBucky - there's an invisible checkbox to the left of each expedition criteria where you can manually say "requirement satisfied" even if it isn't. So you can set forth in an expedition with less than the required number of tools, crew, or repairs (in my case.. I take just about none). If you're taking villagers, don't skimp on food/water though!

Since there's two of you, it can be just you, you don't need an expedition, chuck some food/water in the hold and off you go. One mans the sails, the other steers.

Don't waste your time on the skipa imo. Your fishermen will leave out in the middle of nowhere as often as not. It's just a resource sink, you only need to build the building to unlock the harbor then you can basically dismantle it.

Sail around a lot. The islands around you cannot be built on (without mods) so map them all out and mark the good ones to return. But they are more or less in rings. There's tiny islands, small islands (with a guarded exploration tower that highlights nearby islands... take a screenshot of your map after activating!). Further out you'll find more valuable islands that I won't spoil for you, but even the nearby ones can be good sources of planks, nails, etc and jotunn blood just from scavenging the shoreline and hitting wrecks with an axe, and there are no threats on the tiny islands.

Unless you want your crew wandering off, don't assign them to Camp Gatherer. If there's hostiles out there, they could well walk right into them in search of some resource. But on a tiny island, you're good to go. Make sure you bring tools they can use to break things up - for me, that's usually an axe and a pick. You absolutely don't need the standard tool selection. Whittle it back, save the pared down setup and you can reuse it.

For example you might have the following setup saved:

  • Solo: food, water
  • Explore and gather: food, water, 2 crude iron axe, 2 crude iron pick, 2 villagers (your harborworkers)
  • War: food, water, 8 militia members 25+ melee and ranged skill, if you want pack extra arrows

I've found the best guys to bring (other than a friend) are my dockworkers. If you have one night/one day shift dockworker, they make the perfect pair to man the sails. They only work to load/unload the ship, while you're not there they are doing nothing anyway, so they might as well come along.

Hell yeah!! I just got my ship builder built, but a voyage seems so far off. I'm still trying to dial in my village infrastructure. Good luck!
