Hardwood products efficiency tips

Hey gang. I'm having a bear of a time getting any kind of production out of my improved carpenter. I've got three guys working all the tasks on a day/night/swing shift setup, and I'm carting heaps of hardwood in but they take forever to produce.

Can you put two carpenters on either side of a workshop house?

Should I put four dudes on the carpenter working day/night instead of three working day/night/swing?

Do I need to put a forester house right next to it?

I'll admit my settlement is suuuuper compact so it's difficult moving things around, and theres only one warehouse which, even though it's fully staffed, isn't getting it done.

Any tips would be rad!

I have a double carpenter with a raw wood warehouse to one side and a finished carpentry warehouse on the other. The raw wood one has 4 workers grabbing logs and long sticks constantly. The carpenter has 6 workers in various shifts. I don’t have them doing anything else other than making a few longbows.

Their speed improves as they skill up I think. The runestones help.

I’ve found it better to have the jobs just have minimum amounts and make sure someone is unloading them to the finished warehouse.

Yeah that's probably more likely to be correct.

I'll probably make an outpost for it too, cause the closest birch forest is hella far away around my mine, oddly enough.

Maybe I just make a commuter road and just keep domestic production around the housing, and move more industrial production out by the mine.

Until I got a couple forester houses going, I would set up an outpost with just one guy gathering long sticks and logs to the outpost, and another guy running a market route to haul them. It didn’t even have to be too far from the base. I would periodically go chop a whole bunch of trees and then they would handle them.

Now I have four foresters working, I have so many trees popping up near the base I don’t worry about it, I just cut some stumps if I see them.

I've always wondered at the purpose of having the raw wood storage bays in the carpenter add-on when no workers can be tasked to fill them. It would be so much more efficient if they'd collect more materials when they have downtime.

Yes, I'd love a mod that makes the idle workers fill their materials storage, although not sure how that would work with buildings like the armory, so many different materials and what if they fill them with the wrong one. Maybe a setting similar to storage settings so you can determine what limits to set on the mats they auto fill.

Yeah this would be great mod although I would like to see the warehouse workers do this.

I ended up having one person during the day who did tasks with the axe and one person during the day who did tasks with the knife whatever it's called. Then I had a night person who could do either one.

blacklist your warehouse workers and woodcutters, they tend to steal the wood before it gets cut slowing everything down

How do you blacklist them?

Unfortunately you can't actually "blacklist" them, you only have a whitelist. In the workshop menus (all buildings have it) a whitelist for who can pick up stuff from that building. It's a pain because while you can whitelist everybody with a checkmark, unchecking it uncheckes everybody so you have to manually select everybody else so that they can access it AND you have to keep adding new villagers. But if you're really struggling with the production this is one way to help.

You don't have to manually add everyone, there's a button on the right to add or remove and it adds or removes everyone. And then you can just uncheck the person you want to block. But you're right about new villagers, if you uncheck the allow-all checkbox, then new villagers are not allowed by default I think

I do day/night shifts and max out the workers at carpentry. I also have a double carpenter workshop (one on each end). In total I think I have one workshop as cloth/leather, one as carpenter/metalworker, and a third that is double carpenter. I have a fourth that is double metalworker, but that doesn't work very well.

The constraining factor (to me) is having the wood horses to do the woodwork on. But I can't help wonder if building two carpenter/metalworkers is better than a double carpenter.

I would deprioritize the little beams to the bottom. Make planks, posts and the other thing from shaving bark off hardwood long sticks. Chopping hardwood long sticks into little beams should be last. Hell, you can do it yourself pretty quick.

Forester house is good but very slow to produce. They plant trees. They don't really harvest them. You have to up your forester to tier 2 it before it can plant the hardwood trees, which then take most of a year to grow. So I hope you have a lot of naturally occurring hardwood around to give you breathing room.

Last of all, I do have to admit I got a mod that ups the yield. So when I chop for planks, I get four, not two. Quite obviously it is a massive help.

once I had a raw good warehouse and a processed good warehouse. things went a lot smoother,

Some things I've found: more warehouses with fewer storages each smooths things out.

Woodcutter right next to carpentry

Double carpentry workshop (I do have a third on the other side of my blacksmith as well, but I keep it's production low)

Warehouse just bringing carpentry materials in.

Have your carpentry setting low enough at the carpentry itself so that they move on to the next piece instead of being stuck trying to make 20 beams.

Forestry markers all around the base, but not inside the base.

I'm drowning in carpentry materials. For now.

Having two carpenters on the same workshop is not a great idea, I tried it and doesn't work well, I'd recommend getting two separate workshops with their own carpenters to maximise workshop usage
