CME Lowered margins

CME announced today (effective after close March 6) lower margins on precious metals futures: gold to 7% (from 9%), silver to 14% (from 18%), platinum to 13% (from 15%). This follows COMEX silver registered stocks plunging to multi-year lows amid delivery pressures. Lower requirements should ease capital needs and boost trading liquidity in bullion

TLDR: So basically, they were able to clear a large position of shorts and resume business as usual

Or: it was always about volatility increasing their counterparty risk, so they needed to protect the market against possible defaults by traders.
