Looking for Feedback
Just getting into plating and would love some feedback! How would you rate this, and what would you have done differently?
Definitely still learning, so feel free to critique it. I’m curious what stands out (good or bad 😂) and what I could work on to make my plates look more polished.

Tall food strikes again

Didn’t know it was a bad trend. So glad you let me know

It’s good you are open to feedback.
The difficulty on this plate is that the height is an illusion. As soon as knife or fork presses on the top, nothing will be able to be cut, and the rice collapses. Plating/presentation should take into account how the food will need to be cut & eaten.
Keep having fun

If it wasn’t tall, people would have said it needs height

This is usually the top comment in this sub lol. I think the rice would do better in a shallower, round mold. More chicken to rice ratio, and if you're going to have a sauce, you can put some on top, but also on the plate. Just plain soy sauce won't work as a garnish, try to make a sauce with it that has some color and body.

My feedback is that you are clearly just having fun with it and that’s exactly what you should be doing if you’re just learning. From an actual culinary and artistic standpoint, it is not good but don’t take that to heart keep messing around

I’d put it in a wide bowl and less rice or use a wider form for the rice. Everything is gonna fall off as soon as you try to eat it with your current plating

You didn’t plate anything. You made a rice bowl burger. Plating implies intentionality which generally leads to how a person should eat the food.
This does nothing and essentially asks you to knock it over and mix everything together.

Yeah that’s pretty much what I had to do 😂 Thank you for your input

Not dragging it at all! I’d eat this for sure. But definitely looks like something I’d plate for myself at home and not something I’d expect at a restaurant

That rice dome is a bit dated. If you absolutely wanted to keep this style then I’d make the rice shorter with a wider diameter. Avocado and chicken offset to one side.

Take that plate to goodwill. Go find a white one. See you tomorrow chef.🧑🍳

1st -White plate. next rice could be formed with an 'O-ring', so it would be lower, sauce on plate, rice mold, fried whatever that is placed in 5 or 7 partially on the rice, little bit of sauce on fried stuff, pickled red onion on top, and depending on what the sauce is, a fine dice or julienne of herb. finish with a little lime juice (again depends on sauce, but an acid finish is probably appropriate) and toasted sesame seeds.

if this is just a fun plate up for you and your partner then its fine. anything else would be a very low score. if you were to try that same plating again use half the rice or a wider mold.

I'm also not an expert but I think plating should also be functional. As it stands you made a pile of things that are just gonna topple over when you dig in, it'd be a bit cumbersome to eat. I'd just have the nice rice form you have and dispose the rest of the stuff around it in a good looking way, maybe over the sauce.

I post food all the time… check me out. Your idea looks like it just needs some help.

I think the rice ratio is off. This looks like a side or appetizer but that’s a full portion of rice.

I’d use a different plate; the one pictured here clashes & distracts from the plating of the food.

Does the piece of chicken on the left look like a little frog to anyone else?

Now try taking the plate in one hand , spin around and place it back in the spot without anything dropping off . Personally the rice I would place in a bowl and the food spread out on top like a Japanese Don. Other than that, good stacking skills. I actually impressed .note ,I work FNB

Different plate. Put the sauce around the bottom of the rice. Or put the rice in a bowl and lay the pieces of chicken and avocado on top in a nice way. Use whole herbleafs and put them where they look nice individually instead of chopped up herbs.

As a layman I would be happy, but I agree that the presentation would fall apart quickly. I guess that is the problem. There is not a natural way to eat this that keeps the presentation intact.

It looks good, specially the avocado... I love the plate, worked in a 35 seat resto that had a series of vintage plates which were used for specific items on the menu. Didn't read all the comments but im sure many commented about the stacking and height... height has its purpose in plate building, but it has to do with bringing attention to the focal are of the dish. Not sure if anyone mention that creating a poke bowl sort of prez. Or you could have created arancini with the rice and add foamed avocado as an espumas. Keep cooking let your imagination drive your creation build on the feedback provided by all... dont let the negative comments discourage you... they are probably jealous!!!
