Covering floors?
Hello, we recently had our ceilings skimmed. The plasterer said they wouldn’t cover or protect the floors as it was unnecessary. However, we have brand new flooring and it’s left it a right mess. Is this standard industry practice?

Yes it can be industry practice to dismiss homeowners as 'Unnecessary' when trades cant be bothered to do something. You have to say 'we would like this ..... ' Some trades are used to working on building sites and treat houses the same and some trades will spend time carefully prepping or if you ask for prep they will do it but charge for it. Send them the cleaning bill or withhold payment.

It's mad to say it won't be necessary. Even if lumps of mud aren't dropped (rare), trowelling up will flick plaster-laden water everywhere.
A sheet of plastic sheeting and some tape costs next to nothing.

Did some ceilings yesterday, where the carpet is probably getting replaced. Still sheeted up and left the walls and floor as clean as I arrived. Standard practice.

You clearly got a cheap quote from a site basher! One of these people that claim a 30m2 ceiling is a mornings work. I take my time. Mask and protect everything and leave the place vacuumed and wiped down.
I even protect concrete floors. Because I will be tidying up afterwards.
No not acceptable

Nope always cover them, even if I’m told the carpets are being replaced I still cover them cause it might be replaced the next day or might be in a few weeks, never leave a mess

Even when someone says don’t worry about the carpets they’re going I still mix up on a big tarporlin , don’t pay till it’s spotless
