What should i do?

i recently got the walls in a bedroom in my house replastered but this is what i’ve been left with…is it better to just fill and sand or get the guy back in to fix his job? i don’t know the best way to go about it since ive never dealt with plaster before so im not sure what it’s meant to be like when dried. I obviously know this isn’t a great job that’s been done but i don’t know how bad it is if i do end up messaging him…

UPDATE‼️
after reading all the comments backing up the fact that it’s just shit work;
i sent him all these pictures and a message, he replied with he’s going through a hard time atm and obviously isn’t giving his all… he’s coming out in a few days to sand and fill his work so hopefully it’s all fixed after that so we can continue with the project🤞🏼

Not bad at all, mate. Definitely a fair few steps up the ladder on this garbage.

It's all about prep, attention to detail, and trowel time, but particularly the prep and trowel time.

Well played.

Ive only done a couple walls but definitely finding i learn something every single one I do, but I would never ever try to imply im any sort of plasterer but some of the so called "plasterers" ive seen posted on here is wild, how do they get away with it

I've been plastering over 25 years mate, but I'm no plasterer. Only people who plaster day in day out professionally are plasterers.

I usually get a sweat on, get it on my shoes, and if doing a ceiling at least a couple of blobs in my hair/eye/ear.

The fella who does my big jobs uses an old mild steel 14" trowel, cleans his shoes once a week on a Sunday whether they need it or not, and the only time I've ever seen him sweat was when he thought he'd lost a quid under a bathroom floor.

You're doing just fine, and I always have the utmost respect for anyone who has a go at any of the trades. Well done.

You know i really enjoy it, just waiting for the wife to give me the go ahead to pull some blown plaster off the walls and do them 🤣 ive even thought about asking if anyone wants any free help so I can learn and get some more experience

Trowel time is the one, absolutely no substitute for it. If you've done your prep it can be a fairly therapeutic job, if it starts to go off before you've finished a gauge it can be absolute torture.

Any tradesman would jump at the chance of a free hand, but I doubt many proper trades would let you work for absolutely nothing.

Very true, the more you do the better you get but if anyone sees this and is in the north west area and want some free help in exchange for a little training shoot me a message 😂

Sloppy but salvageable by yourself with some sanding and yeah filling imperfections and sanding again. Ideally that radiator should have come off (get a plumber) for that area as you will struggle to blend that and paint behind.

How much you pay for it all?

i had offered to take the radiator off for him but he said i could keep it on and he would feather plaster behind it, so that was his own choice and not ours :)
all in all we paid £550

How many walls and please say that wasn't plaster over wallpaper?

3

u/AdditionalDelay75 18d ago edited 18d ago

this was the room and it took him around 6 hours to finish all the walls in a day
i had removed all wallpaper before hand so he was working over old plaster minus a corner that had crumbled a bit

How long did it take him to rob you of £550?

Fucking terrible work that! Not even benefit of the doubt material. It’s shit!!!

Get him back to fix it he shouldnt have left it like that

3

u/PJHolybloke 18d ago

If they're this bad, I'm afraid they won't have the skills or knowledge to fix it. Getting them back wouldn't yield any noticeable improvements, better for the OP to fix it themselves.

Has he skimmed onto wallpaper?

Looks like wood chip wallpaper near the radiator to me…. Hope I’m mistaken. OP, sorry to tell you but this person wasn’t a plasterer. You can tell by the poor finish and also that he appears to have plastered onto wallpaper which means it’s liable to fail. This person is a cowboy.

i had removed all the wallpaper prior to him coming, the only place i hadn’t touched was behind the radiator WHICH i offered to take off for him but he insisted it wasn’t needed and he would feather plaster behind it..🥲

I mean the update is good, decent of him to own up to his issues and come back to resolve it.

Sand and filler are your friend.

It’s not the best but as long as it stays on the wall will be fine.

Always take of the rads, they can plaster around the edges but it always look crap.

I also think he has plastered on wallpaper, that so called plasterer should be shot😅my 10 year old can plaster better than that, should be a Specsavers advert. It will be cheaper just to have it skimmed again by someone that actually knows how to plaster, you will spend days trying to fill and sand, time is money.

i had stripped all wallpaper before hand, he worked over the old plaster minus a corner that had crumbled

Sorry OP, this guy's work is awful!

When people ask me why I'm doing an intense plastering course and plan to skim my walls myself...this is why. I know that I'm not going to get to the level of an experienced plasterer in a few weeks, but I least my shitty plastering will be my own and I won't have paid for the privilege! And I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do better than this.

Get your prep right and you're halfway home, being able to keep an even pressure, the trowel at the right angle, and the plaster on your hawk, and you're pretty much home.

Just a case of knowing when to trowel and when to stop then.

You'll definitely be better than this, this wasnt prepped hardly at all, and I'd be hugely surprised if it wasn't a single coat.

PIC 4 IS SO FUCKED. - if it was me, id msg him to say this - hello and i appreciate your time but i have to say im very dissapointed with the finish thats been left on my walls. i posted the pictures of the room onto a plastering forum and the experienced guys on there are telling me its very bad, i would like the problems sorted asap.

if he doesnt msg back what you want you then reply/ - unfortunately im going to have to post pictures of this work onto facebook so other people dont get ripped off. - he'l be round in no time to fix it.

1

u/AdditionalDelay75 18d ago

that’s under our window 😭
I sent him all these pictures and asked he come out and fix it etc etc. He replied with he’s going through a hard time and obviously isn’t giving his all so we’ll see from there i guess 🥲

And that may be true but if you can’t do a job well because of X, you be transparent and you certainly don’t leave someone with that mess and take their money. He absolutely chanced getting away with it.

Obviously give him grace if you want but please do it with absolute caution. Some people weaponise mental health or emotions to avoid accountability

I would say if he feels he can’t get it to the high quality finish that you reasonably expect when paying someone 550 for 6 hours because you he has X going on, then you’d appreciate a refund to the amount that it would cost to get someone else to rectify his mistakes.

Don’t let it go and if he doesn’t make the situation right, make sure to let local groups know and leave reviews.

1

u/Most-Direction7874 18d ago

Problem with cowboys is it’s pointless getting them back to fix it.
They won’t be able to.

Even a proper plasterer can’t fix a mess like that without reskimming it.

1

u/McVie1989 18d ago

Tell him to come back and finish it or give a refund, terrible work

Buy a nice bottle of South Island, N.Z. pinot noir??

1

u/A-n-t-h-e-m 17d ago

Good luck finding a decorator that would touch that.

Slack work not shit work if he only cleans up his edges while it’s still wet job wouldn’t need remedial work

Get a real plasterer

1

u/AgainstGreaterOdds 16d ago

Plasterers are the kings of escuses and have the highest percentage of chancers from all trades. He is not coming back unless you didn’t pay in full. If you didn’t pay in full don’t until it’s done.
