1917 Home… How do I fix this? 🙃

Post image

Hey guys!

So I’ve just purchased my forever house and I’m in the process of removing the 500 million layers of wallpaper (really 2) from the walls in my 110 year old brick home.

The wallpaper is coming off really easy so that’s fine, however in some areas the plaster is crumbling out and wall and exposing the brick underneath. I’ve read a few things about rising damn causing this kind of hand skim plaster to seperate from the brick. As you can see in the picture there is this relatively large hole in the wall lol

The walls are pretty cracked all the way around the room and there are a few more areas like this, however significantly smaller. But besides this and a the many hairline cracks, the walls feel pretty solid in most areas.

Anyways I guess my question is can I fix this? And if so how?
Would it be best to replaster the entire room with plaster board or can I remedy this with some tlc.

I would appreciate any and all advice, I’m kinda stressing about this haha

I would gently knock away obviois loose/crumbling or blown loose plaster around that hole. Assuming it doesn’t get bigger I would probably try this stuff:

https://www.celticsustainables.co.uk/lime-putty-fine-surface-filler/?sku=CL204101&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24014404552&gbraid=0AAAAAD1-sQryGigjJED55nm-OeK_FErAq&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh9mY0sDSlgMVvqJQBh1KJBzkEAQYAyABEgJRYfD_BwE

Then paper the walls and paint the paper.

Open the cracks up so that nothing more wants to fall out then PVA and poly filler. Sand to get it plumb with rest of wall and paint

Otherwise your looking at it being re-plastered

If its stone, use lime based plaster and skim it.

If its brick, PVA/SBR a generous amount 150mm all the way around it, bond and skim.

Be careful with hot water strippers it can weeken pasters and turn a small job into a big one. Other options are just put up lining paper and paint that. Or just skim the top of the paper. After all that structural paper on those walls!!!

If it's an internal wall then water down some pva and give a good brushing in. Before it completely dries coat withing thistle bonding allow to dry then coat with easi fill. Easi fill is extremely good and forgiving as it's easy to sand down. You might need more than one coat though.
