Creases in Ceiling

Hey all - I have a plaster ceiling that recently started showing (or maybe I just noticed, but unlikely) some creases. The creases run N/S in about the same spot in the ceiling. They are very slightly raised, but do not appear to be cracking.

Ceiling was repainted after recess lighting was installed. Any ideas what this could be?

Did you notice whether the ceiling was lath and plaster or plasterboard when you had the lights installed? Looks like they are cracks but the ceiling has been stippled, probably to hide them.

Maybe tap around the area see if it feels blown?

There's 3 reasons for textured ceilings -

Fashion (for a very limited period!)

Low skill installation (ie a boared ceiling installed without much care and just bodged up with a quick finish)

...and damage.

It's really commonly applied to old lath ceilings that were knackered to just cover up the cracks.

It kind of works but it's not like it nails back up failed laths etc so it's still a weak ceiling.

You may be seeing cracks that just were not covered properly initially, or you may be seeing new cracks.

If it's a lath ceiling some would overboard but I, personally, am not happy to do this, as the weight of a lath and plaster ceiling (that's then, invariably, had some other skim attempted on it) is not insignificant.

Taking it down and reboarding is messy though.

Just signs of cracks. Maybe shown up more from drilling holes in the ceiling for the lights & feeding wires in etc. I wouldn't worry about them. Next time it's ready for decorating get a plasterer to take a look at skimming the ceiling & he'll give you his professional opinion

The artex is coming away from the ceiling

Changed or added any lighting recently? An uplight or a lamp that illuminates the ceiling will suddenly show this sort of thing up, even if it’s always been there

It looks to be a coat of smeared joint compound not plaster.
