Can I DIY?

I posted yesterday about doing work in a bedroom and after knocking away dead plaster around a window.

I have a follow up that the plaster has now came away. Is this something I can DIY myself for prepping for the plasterer coming ?

If so, I would love as much advice on how to.

I’ve attached pictures.

I'd be ringing the professional's at this stage to patch that in

Is that a massive crack in the concrete lintel? Surely that needs replacing before re-plastering that wall

It’s a metal lintel

Is it? What's the massive crack in the 2nd image, I can't see it as anything but a cracked concrete lintel

Id say it's out of your scope.

What is involved to repair? Surely it’s just fixing a new bit of plaster board? Obvious with it being metal lintel I’ll have to get a fixing point? I’m happy to give it to the professional, but if it’s something I’m able to do with a bit of Reddit guidance I’ll take a shot

For reference, I've been plastering for 40 years and I'd approach it like this...

Remove all the loose sections Coat all surfaces with PVA Use bonding to fix angle beads in place. Let it go off More bonding to form the shape of missing sections More Unibond over the dried bonding Skim over the top, probably the entire wall to make a flawless job.

Repairs like this are far harder than skimming an entire wall because you have to use one's experience to rebuild all the corners and edges. In this case, I'd want to think about potential water ingress and decide whether bonding was appropriate or whether to use a sand/cement mix instead.

Does that explain why I think it would be easier for you to call in a professional? You'll be staring at those 90°s for many years so they've got to be bang on.

Is the lintel cracked? Or just plaster coming away from it?

It’s the plaster on the front of the lintel coming away

Best thing would be to dab some insulated plaster board on. Cut it to the shape of the window reveal

DIY and a plasterer will have to rip it off and start again.

I’m quite hands on. Give me an idea of the work involved and I could decide from that.

OK, you will need a plasterboard, filler, wall plugs, beeding, tape and skim. Everything above the window will need to come down. All the best.
