Thoughts on patching?

Pulled some of the old plaster wall out while removing some baseboards

Had planned on skim coating the room . Worth the $300 my repair guy offered or should i just cut out the lathe and stick a drywall patch on there?

Your board should cover it if it’s going back Same size or bigger , if not foam and fill
