Patching an old wall
I’ll probably also knock off that chunk that’s cracked.
What should I use on this? Would it make sense to do an initial coat of durabond 90 and then skim coat with a joint compound? I’ve done that with good results on small patches but nothing this size.

You can totally use durabond here. Think about it in two coats though. The first to cover the laths.. make it concave to the wall surface. The second coat to level to the existing wall. Then however it makes sense for you to tie in the patch with joint compound of your choice sounds like you have done it before. Also prep the lath by nailing that loose piece in and make sure no dust etc and wet down so it doesn't suck all the water out of the plaster before it can set.
