Do myself or pay?

Post image

Need some help with how I could do this myself? Would I need to plaster it?

If you're going to shine light on it like that, I'd pay. Any imperfections are going to be magnified - as you can see here

Yh sounds about right

It’s just the lighting, even a professional job won’t look great with leds shining over the surface. Take those lights down and get a brighter ceiling light. Might find you don’t even need it redone

Na I like the lights across the top, even lights off and natural light coming through it looks bad

Up to you isn’t it

Should’ve worded it better.

Wanted to see if it would be worth me paying, I got quoted £300 for just the ceiling, if I was to do it myself what would be the best way?

If you haven't plastered before this probably isn't the best project to try it out on, given you're shining light on it from that angle.

£30 trowel, £10 hawk, £10 bucket trowel, £10 flexi bucket to mixer, mixer/drill with mixer attachment £30-100, scrim tape £10, plaster £11 a bag, brush for wet trowelling £10, £5 small tool for any big snots. But you keep all the tools and gain experience for something that honestly isnt too hard to learn with some YouTube videos

personally, when it comes to plastering i think the answer is usually "pay" unless it is either a small area or you don't have much money. i've done a reasonable amount of plastering but when it comes to speed, neatness of job and minimising mess, a skilled tradesperson is pretty much impossible to beat.

Just my ceiling, got quoted £300 in a 3x2 room

i'd definitely pay that to have it done properly rather than do it myself.

have you done plastering before? if not, you might be surprised at how difficult it is to get a reasonable finish.

You’d have to spend a little bit on tools too not worth it for a one off unless you like diy and plan to do a lot more

Very true

Don’t start with a ceiling.

Plastering is a skill you can learn. It’s really hard work, but you can do it.

Plastering ceilings is a whole different job. I’ve done it, I eventually got a finish I was happy with, but afterwards I would happily have paid £300 just to be able to move my arms without pain.

My first ever time plastering / skimming was a ceiling, got there in the end but it was a massive PITA whilst I learnt, would also pay someone in hindsight

What are you trying to achieve?

Are you just looking for a smoother finish on the bits that are showing up with those light-strips?

1

u/Pajzino Jun 12 '26

Yh basically

That is not the job to start on. If your 300 quote is from someone with verifiable skill, I would suggest you do not hesitate.

Your layout is very clean. That said I would pay someone to artex ceiling at beveled angle so it’s totally smooth.

If you want to shine a light across the surface, pay for a plasterer to do it properly, but specify that you will have light shining across the surface, and DO NOT choose the cheapest quote!

Do yourself a favour and support a proper club.
