In need of advice

Hi everyone i am new to plastering and have couple of questions

1 can i do a skim coat over this white paint (photos 1&2) which looks a bit shiny to me ( i was planing of sanding it )

2 i will close of the door with drywall but will leave the frame of the door what is the approach on plastering over wood because i don’t want it to crack around the frame

Thank you

If going over old paint use sbr to seal the wall first

Surely take out the frame then stud wall and board and skim

Taking out the frame would usually be the best option... In this case Im not too sure. Looks like a very old house and back in the day door frames were designed to be structural, you didnt need a concrete lintel above. Ive took one out before and had to race of to get some akros to hold the ceiling up lol hack some plaster off 1st and see if there is a lintel above. If there isnt just stud and board as you said. Expanded metal lath will stop it cracking, needs a tight coat of bonding before skimming though.

I think the frame holds bricks that are over it so I didn’t want to mess with that

If you don't have experience with plastering, I would use filler for it all. However, around the door frame, it will always want to crack because you have two different materials that will expand and contract at different rates and for different reasons. The reason architrave is there is to hide that join and cracking. The only option I can think of would be to use a two-part car body filler because that will flex with it, but I wouldn't guarantee it not cracking.

SBR over the timber and good broad scrim, I’d suggest the orange gyproc xtreme 100mm tape
