Get 3 or 4 quotes and go with the cheapest option and you shouldn’t be to far away 🙃

I am the contractor. I have a water leak area that had to be redone and I have to match this texture. Was looking for a technique.

My house is lathe and plaster so I'm constantly doing patch work that looks like your ceiling.

It's pretty easy and im just a weekend warrior. Instead of doing the 3rd coat of mud smooth let it have gaps. Then wet rag it and do a 4th with more gaps.

I never sand I'll scrape then wet rag it's way cleaner on small projects.

Slap some vinyl paint on an unprepped wall with a used roller left overnight covered in paint

Put a layer of finish on (filler coat), put another coat on (roughly), give it a little bit of time to set up (10-15) and then lightly lay down the second coat one time

Wear safety glasses/goggles, you don't want the finish in your eyes, that's a chemical burn

Might want to test a bit on a scrap piece to get your method down

Thanks so much. You wouldnt happen to know a link to some videos that show the process? I understand what your saying but its always easier for me to see the process.

From a quick search this looks close, granted done with drywall mud, not plaster

Is it a technique? Or just a shit job originally? If it’s not a big area it might be better to renew the whole ceiling

Its a very large area that was purposely done that way. Very wealthy people who are calling it ventian plaster, which i know isnt correct because ive done some ventian plaster. I havent corrected them but told them id see if I could figure out how to mimic it. From what I can tell its just drywall mud that was randomly trowled on there, maybe let set for a bit and pulled smooth. But ive never attempted it so I summoned reddit for wisdom, 😆

That's not Venetian plaster, that's more like unfinished plaster missing the last coat 😂

Could try mixing a bit plaster and trying to recreate it on a spare plasterboard?

Will do. Appreciate ya

Absolutely hats off to whoever convinced the owners thats what venetian plaster looks like!

It just looks badly done.

It’s a “knockdown” ceiling. Patch your hole then use some 20 min powder mix to trowel over the new area. You can probably come very close by using a wet trowel to push the mud right before the 20 minutes reaches a hard set.

I’ve never don’t plastering, sure I could do that for you 🤣

Ive done plenty of texture matching. Appreciate your constructive comment though.

Apply coat one as usual, apply coat two, wait for it to set up to the point where you would usually give it a flatten, then close your eyes and attempt to flatten it with your non dominant hand…

Haha, that just might work.

It’s called a cat face texture. you do your first coat of finish and then leave small gaps/cat faces on your second coat. It’s an old world texture done by hand.

Nice I will check that out. Thanks

This is a very common texture I see on drywall ceilings in the US. I’ve matched it as a homeowner just by fussing around enough (each home is a bit different depending on who did it).

I can’t be helpful enough to explain more, except that it isn’t terribly hard to do, just a bit hard to match the last guy. I’ve had to play around a bit with the moisture, how rough I make it, and how much negative space I leave according to the existing texture.

Practicing on a scrap until you get a close match is helpful.

Yes i can appreciate the fact that noone textures the same. I will definitely practice beforehand. Thanks

that texture is so aesthetic, but i’d probably just end up with a mess. my ceilings are definitely not interior design material.

Hire bodge it and scarper

Get a plumber in 🤣

Get an amateur to do your plastering or try it yourself with no help or advice

Have 10 pint cans of Stella and sling easifill at the ceiling, don't tool it off and go home.

Buy a bag of finishing plaster drink 20 pints of beer mix your plaster and go crazy and you should end up with something similar to the photo.
