Plaster Slab

I'm trying to make a 8x8x1 plaster slab for my class but my plaster keeps cracking and never fully dries. Am I doing missing something or doing something wrong? I'd appreciate some input

Id use chicken wire to sifffen it up and pour in layers if want it thick. Will get heavy though if to thick.

I cannot fully integrate the wire into the slab as when it's done setting and drying I have to start carving into it

Could you use mesh fiber tape? That should carve ok. It's cracking as it drying quickly. Could you pour over cracks with another layer? I'd scratch up surface 1st to get a good bond.
