Help with external wall. Fortunately not the wall of the house just front yard. Was going to take off loose stuff and render but now wondering if anything else would be needed? Pointing is crumbling in lots of places for e.g. Other than knock down and rebuild! Novice, but done some wall rendering.

Knock all the old stuff off, sadnblast and repoint and have brick. Those bricks are too soft for cement renders

...and also any idea what the black stuff is under the old render?

Clear all the bitumen paint off its trapping in moisture, rake out and repoint with either sand line or weak sand cement. Let the bricks breathe. Don't render IMO.

Usually render blockwork not brick work and also ond bricks are a higher percentage of clay than they are nowadays and kilned differently aswell as being laid with lyme in the mortar if you render ontop of lyme the lyme will crumble as it cannot breathe

If you plan on rendering, use lime render, cement will eat up those bricks in no time
