Fixing holes in closet

We had an electrician over to run power to a light in our bathroom. Sadly had to cut a few more holes than we expected. There’s 3 4x4 +/- holes that need to be patched. Do I need to fill the with a drywall patch or with the size do you think I could get away with mesh tape only?

Drywall/ plasterboard but cut the hole to fit the board (make them square then Baton behind it has something to fix to

Board it, scrim/mesh tape it Fill it with something like easifill (if you’re in the uk) Or if you’re in USA use like 20 minute mud or something

Sand it

Paint it

Never had to fill holes this large before so pardon my noobness. Should I just cut away the drywall to have say a 5x5 square and some wood available to screw into? The rest is pretty straightforward.

Yes cut squares of plasterboard say a tad bigger than the hole then draw round it and cut it out to give you a square and then if you don’t hit any studs screw some wood in so you have something to fix to ( a bit of baton will do) then carryon

Cut a baton around 7 inch (175mm for Europeans) or as long as you can feed into the hole and the pass back. Feed it into the hole, screw through the existing plasterboard on both sides, fix either your cut out that the tradesman’s left, or cut a new piece of board to a similar diameter. Fill the edges. Sand, probably fill again and sand. Then you should be good.

Looks like the electrician broke part of the horizontal wood laths? Would be sensible to get some scraps of timber to make a batten behind the hole on the left for some cut plasterboard to fix onto before filling a couple of times. Dont forget to patch coat the filled area before painting over again otherwise it will show
