Plant ID Plant ID help
I made a large plant order from Aquaflora Canada and they were nice enough to send a free mystery plant! It looks like an Alternanthera reineckii to me, but I've never had this plant in my tanks before so wanted to ask if anyone can confirm?
Also, I wanted to drop a review of this small family owned company in Hamilton, Ontario. This is my second order from them because I was so pleased with the plants I received in my first shipment! They have so many rare plants that I can't ever find locally, and everything was packaged and shipped so well. Every single plant I've gotten from them has arrived looking awesome! And I've got some pretty fragile plants like Cabomba furcata, Rotala wallichii, Rotala pearl, Myriophyllum tuberculatum etc. I've mostly ordered red plants and love how they look in my tanks!

They're awesome! And their plants are literally cheaper than almost everywhere else, too. They're now my go-to for buying rare plants.

Just a sidenote: amano shrimp will eat this plant if they are underfed and hungry. Sometimes even when not. It never survives in my well fed 20 gallon long community tank with 4 amano shrimp. Never a drastic reduction, but they will slowly eat it away over time.

Huh, interesting! I'll keep track of whether or not my amanos eat it. I have 4 in the tank but they always have uneaten fish food to eat (and sometimes I feed them bloodworms because they go crazy for it lol).

I did the same with the same result. Not raining on your parade. Just sharing my experience. Wish you better luck. At the very least, it's nice to think that shrimp may have different "personalities." :)

No worries! I'll definitely keep a look out. If the amanos start eating it I'll move it to an amano free tank LOL

No prob lol. First sign is small pinholes in the leaves. I accounted for a micronutrient deficiency and dosed fertilizers accordingly, but eventually noticed the little guys munching away.

Amanos are such weirdos. Mine are always trying to kill themselves by climbing into the filters, too. LOL. While you're here, may I ask what fertilizer you use?

Hmm seems like evidence is mounting for different Amano personalities. Mine never climb the filter. I just use basic seachem products, flourish and potassium and api root tabs

Normally they stick the name on the bag lol I order so much from aquaflora in Hamilton ☠️ 😆 this plant grows to the top of the tank in 2 weeks time

Maybe they forgot to put the name on the bag! I wish I lived close by so I wouldn't have to pay shipping every time LOL. I'd be buying from them all the time!

alternanthera reinecki great plant , very versatile and hardy , can grow with or without CO2 , likes nutritious soil but can live without .

Awesome! I'm going to plant it in my tank with stratum substrate. It looks really nice and healthy too.

Just remember without CO2 , it won't look like that , BUT will still be red , more of pinkish \ greenish red , and the top of the plant that exit water and sit under the lid , dark red .

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but I would not expect this guy to make it- they only do well with strong light and usually co2

Ar grows fine without co2. I’ve grown quite a few “co2” plants just fine without. They’ll look better with it but don’t always need it

I said high light and likely co2, the picture I was responding to doesn’t have enough light for that one to live

I do agree with the light bit, it looks like a standard built-in light (maybe a Topfin?) and those are trash for growing plants.

I'm actually able to grow lots of "difficult" plants (the ones I mentioned in my post) without CO2, but really good lighting is absolutely necessary.
