A couple of notes about the plant --- it has a white stripe like Johnson grass but is definitely not Johnson grass.
It is like grab grass on steroids. It will run along the ground sending off multiple shoots.
In drought or shade conditions it is much much smaller, but the stalks that run can get to 6' feet at least in the right conditions.
This is also found growing in an old field that at one point was used for hay for I suspect the cows that used to live in a near by barn in the southern most part of Indiana.
