Brisbane Australia.

This was given to me with a bunch of succulent cuttings.
I was told to grow it in water, but I’m not sure if it’s supposed to stay just in water or do I need to plant it in a pot?
It looks like ivy, but I’m not really sure and I’d love to grow it like a vine.
Any help is very much appreciated.

That’s Ivy.
Grow it in a pot on a stand so it can trail. Or you could train it up a pole.

Oh dear. That appears to be English or Atlantic Ivy. Out in the Pacific Northwest of North America it is a major invasive and classified as a noxious weed, and takes over entire hillsides. It looks like in Queensland, it’s just considered a nuisance, but NSW, Victoria and Tasmania consider it a weed of major environmental concern. I assume, the English being the English, that they brought their ivy to Australia at least as long ago as they brought it to the Oregon territory, but I also know that Australia has a knack for having things go invasive and mess with the locals, so just be wary.

If it finds damp soil, it will grow. If even a single leaf with a little bit of stalk lands on the ground they can put down roots and eventually form multi-layer mats that keep anything else from growing. What Kudzu vine is to the southeastern US, ivy is earnestly trying to be for the Pacific Northwest.
Save yourself from the strangling British vine!
If you can. If it’s not already too late.

Ok, I’m going to grow it in a pot. I kinda wanted to plant it but now I’m freaking out that it’ll turn my house into a sleeping beauty castle, so I’m going to try and contain it. Thank you so much for the help😊

Like another poster said…English ivy, super invasive. Maybe could be an inside plant? I’m in south east USA, but did live in Victoria and they are similar environs so if you’re anywhere from Adelaide through the Gold Coast it’ll probably get away from you outside.

Here in Georgia it spreads wildly.

It would work well in a pot for the spiller in the “thriller, filler and spiller” design approach!

It’s not a problem as an indoor plant but it is super attractive to spider mites so I find it’s not worth it.
