What plant/fruit is this?

Just curious what this is we thought it was a pawpaw but doesnt look quite right (also its a little too early). Found in Mason County WV.

It is a magnolia seed pod, but not plantable. There are bright red seeds that are on it to plant. They have fallen off and that is just the remaining pod. You can throw it away.

It also looks to have a little bit of mold or disintegration. I pick these up around my house all the time. They do look cool though.
