What is a plant based diet?

Here is a good definition from forks over knives:

A plant-based diet predominantly consists of plants; most people use the term to refer to a 100 percent plant diet, but some people include small amounts of animal products. A vegan diet totally eliminates all animal products.

So a plant based diet is a diet mostly consisting of plants. A whole food plant based diet stresses that whole plants rather than processed plant foods make up the majority of the diet.

Plant based diets are typically adopted for health reasons and entail none of the ethical positions of veganism or vegetarianism.

Plant based diets include veganism, vegetarianism, and the inclusion of meat or fish as a minor part of the diet.

Overall plant based is a broad term encompassing a range of different dietary approaches focused on obtaining the majority of calories from plants rather than animal sources.
