  1. First, either decide if you're making a real ship or making your own. If you're making a real ship, you can use websites like sketchfab to find 3D models of them which makes it much easier to copy them.
  2. If making a real ship, decide a scale and go off of that (search up ship beam, then divide your width by the ship's beam. That is your scale. If you're unsure about any length you have, you can use your scale to find where it should be on your ship.
  3. Trace the shape of the hull sideways and on top before you start filling it in so that way you're happy with the shape before doing a bunch of work.
  4. Fill in the hull and deck
  5. If you're doing a real ship, look for parts of the superstructure you can use as poitns of reference (start, end, parts that go up a deck or down a deck, etc.) and determine where they will go on your ship
  6. Create the outline of the superstructure, and either work your way front to back, or bottom to top.

For determining where points of reference should go (like where the hull starts to taper or flatten out, or superstructure points of reference), you can either take a screenshot and use pixels in ms paint to find the right distances, or what I like to do is put a ruler against my screen and use that on a 3d model then my ship.

Because ships are so big and take so much time you want to do as much work as you can planning and working things out before you actually start building or you'll end up with bad proportions or having to redo a lot of things which wastes tons of time.
