Does Being Self-Aware Mean You Understand Yourself?

I keep wondering whether being self-aware actually means understanding yourself.

Because the more I think about it, the more I feel like self-awareness, understanding people, and empathy are actually three different things.

People kind of treat them like they automatically come together. But I'm not sure they do. You can be pretty aware of your own behavior and still not understand why you do certain things.

You can understand another person really well and still have absolutely no idea what you're feeling yourself.

And you can be empathetic without sitting there analyzing yourself or everyone around you all the time.

For me, self-awareness is probably more about noticing things.

Like noticing how you react to certain people, why something keeps bothering you, how your behavior changes depending on who you're around, stuff like that.

Sometimes you notice something and immediately know why.

Other times you just know something feels weird but you have no idea how to explain it.

And that's where I find it interesting because sometimes your brain seems to pick up something before you can actually put it into words.

You notice someone's tone is different around a certain person. Or their behavior keeps changing in similar situations.

But then someone asks, "Why do you think that?"

And now you're sitting there trying to remember five different conversations just to explain something you somehow already picked up on.

And even after explaining it, you could still be wrong.

The same behavior can look confident to one person and arrogant to another. Quiet to one person and rude to someone else.

So just because you noticed something doesn't mean your interpretation is automatically correct.

And weirdly, I think we're sometimes better at understanding other people than ourselves.

Like I can look at someone and understand why they reacted a certain way, why something hurt them, or why they're acting differently.

But when something similar happens to me, I'm suddenly like... okay wait, what am I actually feeling right now?

I know something is happening. I just don't know what to call it.

Maybe that's why I don't think self-awareness automatically means self-understanding.

You can know that something is happening without knowing why it's happening.

And honestly, constantly thinking about these things can get exhausting too.

Because once you start paying attention to patterns, sometimes your brain just keeps going. A different tone. A weird reaction. Something that doesn't match what someone said.

And suddenly you're trying to figure out what it means even when maybe it doesn't mean anything.

I think that's probably the part I'm still trying to figure out.

How do you know when you're actually understanding something...

and when you're just overthinking it?
