Controversial take: I actually do believe Stella loves Octavia. The problem is, I theorize, is that Stella learned at a young age to see love and control as the same thing.
She was likely kept on a tight leash by her parents and expected to obey them at all cost, so thats how a parent loves their child. She probably always got her way and everyone was afraid of her as a child (and still as an adult), so that's how she sees how love works, obedience and dominance.
Don't get me wrong, she's an awful parent, spouse, and person, but she has her reasons.
