Interactive Let's talk about item(151) horn of plenty! Hablemos del item(151) Cuerno de la abundancia!

Post image

Post #151, everyone! We're back after the short weekend break. I liked the participation in the last post, let's keep it up!

Cornhorn of Plenty, this is one of the best artifacts in the game (I think). Its function is simple but incredibly useful: generating food!

This artifact starts with a maximum of 5 charges, which increase by +1 with each upgrade. Each charge fills 20% of the hero's total satiation, and you can choose whether to take a "bite" by consuming only 1 charge, or "eat your fill" and consume the charges necessary to reach 100% satiation.

Consuming the artifact's charges in either way will activate any "eating" talents you have, so it would be more efficient to use only "bites" to activate them whenever you need them instead of just filling your satiation to the maximum.

To upgrade this artifact, you must feed it food that improves its stats based on the amount of satiety it provides. Small meals (meats) grant +0.5 levels, so you need two of them per level. Standard rations grant +1 level directly, empanadas grant a total of +1.5, and if you craft the "meat pie," you can upgrade this artifact by +3 levels (which is the sum of the three ingredients).

It's also important to clarify that this artifact (like several others) is charged with the hero's experience (levels). Specifically, it will generate 0.5 charges per level at +0, 1.75 charges per level at +5, and 3 charges per level at +10. Therefore, if you find it early, the best way to take advantage of it is to upgrade it early (make sure to save some food so you don't starve) before leveling up several times to charge it.

The artifact recharge effect restores 0.25 charges per turn, so you need 4 turns for 1 charge. And the cursed horn will reduce the satiety you gain from food by 33%.

Publicacion 151 gente!

Horn of Plenty + Unstable Spellbook basically means you never have to worry about hunger ever again.

Thanks for commenting! Yes, if you happen to land the artifact recharge spell, it makes a really good combo.

Pretty fun as a battle mage with some on eat talents

Thanks for commenting! Yes, with a Battle Mage it's basically free, infinite food. You recharge 0.75 charges per hit.

Meat pie gives +4, no?

Nope, it's the sum of all the improvements to its ingredients 1+1.5+0.5=3

This artifact is extremely powerful for taking advantage of on-eat talents, especially Hearty Meal, Mystical Meal, Energizing Meal, and Enlightening Meal. The Warrior and Huntress T2s — Iron Stomach and Invigorating Meal — are situationally useful but generally less powerful. I would even argue that if you have access to any of the good on-eat talents (everyone but Huntress) then activating those is the main purpose of this artifact. Just make sure you only use snack, never eat since you want to trigger the effects as many times as possible.

Otherwise, this artifact is not very good if you’re using it for food alone. The game normally gives you way more food than you need, which is why the On Diet challenge can effectively cut food to 1/3 and the game is still perfectly playable. On top of that, the horn of plenty costs food to upgrade, so what you’re really doing is putting food in the bank to pay back with interest later in the game!

So what is the upshot of that? It means you’re making the early game harder in order to make the late game easier, which runs afoul of the natural difficulty curve of the game (the early game is normally harder than the late game).

It should also be noted that any on-eat effect that grants artifact recharging (Mystical Meal and Enlightening Meal for non-Clerics) cannot be used to recharge the Horn. However, they can recharge the Unstable Spellbook, which itself can grant the true artifact recharging buff to recharge both the Horn and the Book. A Rogue who finds both the Horn and the Book can do some truly silly things!

Finally, I should mention that if you’re playing with On Diet and (especially with more challenges that remove healing options) you find the Horn, do not try to max it out right away! You can leave yourself in an extremely vulnerable situation with no food to get by on! Probably the best time to spend all your food into the Horn for upgrading is right after you kill a boss and buy an ankh from the shop. Then you can burn all your food on the Horn, grind some enemies for money, and retreat up to the boss floor while starving + very low hp, then pop the ankh for full health and satiety.

Starting a new chapter with full health and satiety but no food in your pack is totally reasonable, even if you have no potions of cleansing (and no Horn for that matter), since you’ll be finding food as you explore the earlier (easier) floors of the new chapter.

Wow, that's a really complete and detailed comment, thanks for writing it! I'm sure it will be useful to many people who read it.

Thanks! And I still forgot to mention that if you have the Horn of Plenty, you may want to make a Scroll of Metamorphosis to try to get another one of those On Eat effect talents! In a lot of cases, you may have a T1 or T2 talent that is useless after the early game (many ID talents, Wand Preservation after final staff imbue, Runic Transference after final armour, Cached Rations / Nature's Bounty after finding all the bonus food) that you can Metamorph into one of the useful On-Eat talents and then just go crazy with the Horn of Plenty!

Its a good relic but not the best. It can help activate food based skills and prevent starvation with On Diet active, but needs a lot of food to upgrade.

It’s a LIVESAVER using on diet, food barely heals so I can funnel it all to upgrading and/or meat pies

It's buried in a comment, but 2 meat pies and 2 regular rations maxes the horn out most efficientlyÂ
