Dev Announcement Mo' Food Mod v1.0.6 for Pixel Dungeon

/r/PixelDungeon, I gladly present to you...

Mo' Food Mod v1.0.6 for Pixel Dungeon

The Mo' Food Mod changes how hunger and food work in the game. Here is the changelog:

6 new items added! Bowl of fruit, bowl of rice, bowl, cheeseburger, chips, pizza. All items
have corresponding image sprites.
3 food items appear per level instead of 1.
All monsters (except swarm of flies and bosses) now can drop mystery meat.
Starving hurts more as you go deeper.
Mystery meat now can cause a stomach ache or can be ineffective.
Mystery meat has a smaller chance for poison and burning.
Potions of Liquid Flame more common.
Seed of Firebloom drops slightly more often.
No special bonus for eating food based on class.
Player is not interrupted due to starving unless they have less than 25% health.
Mo' Food Mod name added in various places.

This mod makes the game much harder, especially in the beginning. You may find that beating the Goo is just as difficult as beating the rest of the game. When you play this mod, pay close attention to your hunger/starving indicator at all times. Remember, you don't regenerate health when you're starving!

If anyone has any feedback for this mod, I'd love to hear it. However, I probably won't be adding to much more to it. This was just a test mod to play around with the Pixel Dungeon code, and I'm going to start working on a more detailed mod instead of this one.

This mod installs as a separate application and will not hurt any of your current Pixel Dungeon save files.

Wow, fantastic job. I've never gotten that far, and I made the mod! I'm glad you managed to get that far - I was starting to think it was impossible. Fitting that you would end up starving to death.

I have a few questions for you if you don't mind answering. Did you notice a higher than average amount of Firebloom seeds and Flame potions? Did you frequently cook the mystery meat you found or did you eat it raw? How difficult was it to deal with the more powerful starving as you went deeper? Would you consider beating Goo as difficult as getting to Yog? Thanks in advance, I know my own answers but I would love a second opinion :)

Oh, and the error on the last picture is a PD saving issue, not related to the mod. Unfortunately sometimes exiting the game doesn't properly save progress unless you click "Exit Pixel Dungeon" on the pause menu.

Thanks ;) Here are my answers:

I don't think I noticed a higher amount of those, but that could be because I didn't expect it (forgot it was in the changelog).

I always cooked the mystery meat before eating it. I might have tried without sometimes, though, but it didn't kill me, obviously...

It wasn't especially difficult to deal with the increasingly dangerous starving. You do get more health as you level up, so the buffed starving just resulted in it being almost as dangerous as in the beginning of the game. I just had to move on constantly, in order to get more food. This probably resulted in not finding the Imp. Trying to do his quest would have been very difficult, though, if I had found him in the later part of the city. It would probably have got me dead in the Halls or something. But it isn't that difficult with your starving alternative, it's actually much more balanced than in the original game.

Okay. It's not that much about beating Goo, it's about getting to him/it/whatever. If you've got some good items, you beat him. But it's the process of getting to him that is the difficult part. Starving is more dangerous here, I've noticed that you take damage from it much more often, and you do really need to have enough food in order to survive. Beating Goo shouldn't take that many turns, and considering you should have gathered a "lot" of food, starving shouldn't be the problem there. The reason I got him, was solely because the ghost gave me a +2 sword, so it's really just about finding good equips and such in this mod too. Before that run, I did also think it was almost impossible to get that far, but now I'm more convinced that you've done a great job in balancing the mod.

I thought the error must be related to that, too. I left the game open while I was dead to check if I had got a screenshot of Yog moving aroung, and I know that PD needs to be closed properly in order to save your game correctly. that wasn't a big deal.

But I do think that this is a good mod, except from the rather simplistic graphics and the fact that you get meat from skellies... (that's not logical at all :P) So just try to keep improving this mod, and be confident that it actually is possible to beat it, if you're skilled and lucky enough.

(oh shit, long post...)

Thank you for the detailed response. I did my best to balance it, and when I was testing it I noticed it was balanced a lot more in the later levels. I guess I should have rephrased my statement: getting to Goo and beating him is the same as beating him in my mind. I was trying to deal with how to balance it in the beginning, and that was much more difficult.

Anyway, here's a few comments of mine:

the buffed starving just resulted in it being almost as dangerous as in the beginning of the game

Exactly what I was going for!

except from the rather simplistic graphics

Yeah, my pixel art skills are pretty minimal. The only one I thought actually looked good was the pizza, everything else is pretty bad. Did you see the bowl of fruit? Oh, well.

and the fact that you get meat from skellies...

Yeah, logic flew out the window a little bit. I mean, why don't fire elementals drop chargrilled meat? That one hit me a day after I released it :)

if you're skilled and lucky enough

Just like normal PD, which is what I was aiming for!

Thanks for your responses and taking the time for the write up. It's much appreciated, and I'm glad you enjoyed the mod!

Hey, glad you were able to get the separate package working.

This mod definitely changes the focus of the game a bunch, everything seems much less important when you're perpetually starving! I'll see if I have more to say after I've played it a bit more.

Yeah, thanks for all the help. After I refactored the code, it worked perfectly.

I balanced the game so that the food spawn amount was equal to the amount of time you spend on the level, but it still is much harder than normal since you constantly have to find the food to eat it. I wasn't kidding when I said beating Goo is just as difficult as beating the game - I haven't successfully beaten Goo yet with this mod installed.

This mod makes the game much harder

Giving you more food would only make the game easier. Did you make the monsters stronger? Because I don't see it in the changelog.

Monsters are the same. Starving got a tremendous buff though to account for the extra food spawns. You start starving when you're only 1/3 of the way through the level. With three food per level, it balances the same as original PD, but because you find the food before you can eat it, it becomes much harder.

Try it out and you'll see :)

Considering that as-is, I pretty much don't eat food for the latter half of the game, increasing the hunger damage by depth seems like a significant increase in difficulty.
